  • Difference between sharpening, honing and stropping a blade?

Hi, can anyone please tell me the differences between each of these aspects, how often you should do each of them, and how useful they each are to the cutting potential of a blade. Thanks!

  • Most effective self-defense/combat knife design?

Hi all, so I couldn't actually find this question answered directly, so I'm giving it a shot. Looking for most effective knife design or particular knife for use against other (possibly armed) human beings. I'm looking for input on blade length (mobility vs. cutting/stabbing potential), blade type (clip point, spear point, hawkbill, tanto, double edged, serrated, fixed vs. folding, automatic, etc.), steel type, handle design (ergonomic individualized finger grip vs palm bulge, etc.), weight and anything else that may be relevant to a self-defense situation. You can recommend general designs or specific models.

Hoping to get input from those with personal experience rather than arm-chair 'experts'. Assume that large, fixed blades are possible for my EDC. I'm aware of the laws in my jurisdiction, so don't bother worrying about legality of certain knife characteristics.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not asking you IF a knife is a good choice for self defense. I'm not asking you to debate between knives and guns, tasers, pepper spray, batons, whatever else.
