Finding x from two diagrams?
I've got two diagrams, both made up of two isosceles triangles that touch, with an intersecting line. I have the measurements for their bases, and I know that one of the triangles is the same height in both diagrams (I don't know that value, but it must be equal). I also know that the height of the second triangle in the first diagram is equal to the height of the second triangle in the second diagram, minus a fixed value (that is known, 8,225,000). I need to find the height of the second triangle in the first diagram (x) using the information, but I just cannot work out the equation I need to do this. I've uploaded both diagrams, and a list of all of the values and variables, available here: http://minds-i.co.uk/server/findingX.png
I would really appreciate it if you would be able to shed any light on the solution, or any method you may be able to think of for finding it. Thanks in advance!
2 AnswersMathematics8 years agoCan you remotely start a process in Visual Basic?
Basically, I have two applications. One resides on the server, where it maintains a database, and one on client machines connected to the server. When one client updates the database, the information needs to be updated on all of the clients' machines. The server application is informed when the database changes, but the method (SqlDependency) would put too much strain on the system if it were pushing to all of the machines (potentially hundreds as the application is rolled out, and the server can't deal with that many and maintain speed).
My question is, if the server application is informed of a change, can it fire a command in the client application on the machines? When that happens, they'd respond as necessary, and pull the changed data from the database. Polling isn't really an option, as it'd put a lot of strain on the machines and the server, and slow response times causing potential data integrity issues.
Thanks in advance.
1 AnswerProgramming & Design8 years agoDoes Fair Use still apply if a contract explicitly states to the contrary?
In this case, I'm thinking about screenshots of software. The Microsoft EULA states "you may use but not share its icons, images, sounds, and media." On top of that, they own copyright of the design elements in the software provided. If a user agrees to that EULA (you have to in order to access the application), would Fair Use (US law) still cover their publication of screenshots of that software under the standard terms of Fair Use?
Thanks in advance.
1 AnswerLaw & Ethics8 years agoCan you apply amplitude effects in Adobe Audition?
I'm fairly new to Audition, and was wondering whether it's possible to apply one track's amplitude properties to a separate track. I've recorded a constant tone, unchanging in pitch, that changes in amplitude. I then have a second track that contains my audio content. At the moment, it contains just pink noise. I was wondering whether there would be any way of masking (not the right term, probably applying the characteristics of) the amplitude of the noise track with the tone track. I need this for a film project I'm doing; I have a radio in a scene where the camera moves around in one long shot. However, I won't have the final recording for the radio content when I record the shot. Therefore, I want to play a constant tone at a constant volume, and the changes in position of my microphone will result in a changing amplitude to the recorded tone (the whole scene is silent other than the tone, so there will be no erroneous additions to the tone). Could I theoretically then use the tone recorded on set to mask the amplitude of the audio, adding the movement properties to the radio soundtrack?
Thanks in advance, and I apologise if this is simple; as I said, I'm new to Audition.
1 AnswerSoftware9 years agoCan you copy registry keys without Windows?
I'm repairing a laptop with a dying HDD, and need to know whether I can copy over the registry to a new one. The original hard drive still works, but cannot boot Windows (a system file has become corrupt). The hard drive was replaced by the company who provided the laptop, and I've re-installed the same version of Windows onto it. I've got the old HDD in an external caddy, and can access all of the files etc perfectly well.
To speed up the process of re-instating the applications, I was wondering whether I could copy over the program files and the registry keys from the old HDD to the new one. I can usually do this fine, however, I've only ever had experience where the old HDDs are still running, and I can export the keys before swapping out the drives. Can I copy over the registry from the old machine?
Thanks in advance.
4 AnswersOther - Computers9 years agoHow many possible sets of 25 can I get from 200?
If I had 200 numbered balls (each one unique), and I wanted to create 8 sets of 25, how many different combinations are possible? I can only use each ball once per run, and need to use all each time. I can only have 25 balls in each set, and need to have 8 sets. However, I want to discount any sets that are the same, just in a different order from run to run.
In other, hopefully more understandable words, I want to know how many unique options I'd have to create 8 sets of 25 balls from 200 balls. Sorry if this is hard to understand, I've muddled myself up with all my attempts to work this out. I know I should be able to do this, but I keep getting an answer then thinking I'm using the wrong formulas.
Thanks in advance.
4 AnswersMathematics10 years agoMac OS X 10.5 install hangs?
I have a PowerBook G4 with a brand new hard drive, superdrive and RAM. It has a 1.33MHz processor speed and is fully compatible with Mac OSX Leopard in all of its specifications. I have tried two separate installation discs (both retail, one version 10.5 and one 10.5.6) and both hang at a grey screen with the pinwheel. I have left it for over an hour and it doesn't change.
To be sure it wasn't just a disc problem, I tried the disc in an intel iMac and another PowerPC of the same specifications. The iMac booted the disc correctly, whilst the PowerPC (with Tiger installed) prompted me to restart, then hung in exactly the same place.
I have tried everything I can possibly think of and lots of recommendations by Apple, and nothing has worked. I've reset the PRAM, the PMU and the Open Firmware, all to no avail.
Please could anybody with any information help me out?
3 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoPowerbook G4 leopard installation black screen solution?
I was given a Powerbook G4 without a hard drive or any ram installed. I purchased a new hard drive and ram, along with a OS X Leopard Retail disc. I have tried installing it multiple times, every single one resulting in a black screen with the coloured pinwheel. I was told by my network technician that the CD drive needed changing, so I purchased a replacement for that as well.
However, I am still getting the same result. When I switch it on and insert the disc, the powerbook chimes, shows a screen with the 'no OS' icons, changes to the loading Apple for about a minute, then to a completely blue screen for another minute or so, then finally to the black screen. Shortly after the black screen appears, the cursor also appears and then changes to the coloured pinwheel.
I can here the disc and the hard drive running, along with a clicking every now and again from the disc drive (is this normal?). I have left it for over 2 hours, and it still hasn't changed.
The powerbook meets/exceeds all of Leopard's minimum requirements and recognises the hard drive when booted in open firmware. Does anyone know how to solve this please?
