1 AnswerR&B & Soul7 years agoAm I okay for a couple of weeks of not so intense practice (pastel)?
I have recently picked up pastel drawing and started drawing a little bit each day starting a couple of weeks ago (after I figured out that construction paper is a cheap option for practice paper). The attached photo is my most recent pastel. It's a puffin head with a rock and ocean in the background. I just want to know if I'm doing okay and any areas in which I could improve.
Please, be harsh, I get too much praise from my family. No one is blunt enough in real life. The only way I will improve is if you direct me.
Sorry about the blurry picture quality, the lighting in here is terrible and so is my camera.
The paper used in orange construction paper. I used a picture for reference on the head, but not on the rock, ocean or sky.

If I did the Photobucket thing wrong, please tell me.
2 AnswersDrawing & Illustration7 years agoEnglish grammar book suggestion?
Hello people! I'm in my second year of college and I believe I have finally settled on a major. I wish to double major, English and Psychology, but to do this I need flawless grammar. I never went to high-school and barely attended middle and elementary school, so I've had to read quite a few supplementary texts to get by in things like algebra and calculus. I am now in dire need of such a supplementary text for English grammar, for I made only a C in English 111, and that C simply will not cut it if I wish to major in English (nor does it cut it at a personal level).
So, to get to the point, I need a book (not a textbook) that lays out English grammar in such a way that I can easily teach myself. I know very little, so one that covers a broad range would be great.
Specifically, I know nothing of comma splices, run on sentences, dangling (insert dangling thing here), and many other things.
Oh, yeah, exercises with answers are a must.

I asked this question earlier with no takers. Please don't lambaste me for reposting.
1 AnswerBooks & Authors7 years agoHelp me arrange an outline for a paper comparing the following two philosophers?
I have my finals next week, but I also have a paper due. I've been playing more guitar than I have been studying philosophers (go figure), so I'm a tad behind.
Basically, I just need some points of comparison for PLATO and HEIDEGGER. I understand them quite well, but simply comparing their concepts of reality (Dasein vs. Ideal forms) a 5-7 page paper does not make.
So, again, I'm not asking you to do my outline for me, I just need some points of comparison.
Any help would be great, I'm pretty stressed.

In the following sentence is the phrase "to be" necessary, or can I remove it?:
Where rationalists thought the senses to be wholly inaccurate, Empiricists saw what the senses receive to be the only source of reality that one has available.
I know the sentence is choppy in general, but I can apply this piece of advice to other areas with a similar situation, so it would be great if you could help me out.
2 AnswersWords & Wordplay7 years agoCan someone help me with this?
Given I(R+nr)=nE find n in terms of the other quantities.
I don't want the answer, I know that already, I simply want to know the steps in which to do this. I'm trying to teach myself algebra, but I'm stalled up on this. Any help is greatly appreciated.
1 AnswerHomework Help7 years agoHelp me with this treacherous word problem!?
Well, I've been teaching myself algebra so I don't have to take remedial classes before I start college algebra next semester (two semesters behind mind you due to pesky quadratic applications) and I've been doing very well so far, in fact it's quite easy. Unfortunately I have come across a linear word problem and it is thoroughly torturing me. I found the answer via process of elimination, but I wish to solve it algebraically as well. Here is the question:
A teacher distributes $2 among 20 students, giving 5 cents to some and 25 cents to the rest. How many children received 25 cents?
2 AnswersHomework Help7 years agoGive me the best electronic music that you can name?
I just got some nice new headphones and I'm looking to shake my brain while I do some coding. I have no particular tastes, but I do prefer fast stuff. I'm not big into anything electronically produced so any genre is fine.
4 AnswersOther - Music7 years agoBest books about the Korean War?
I already asked a similar question in books and authers but was told to come here.
I'm writing a novel and to appropriately get into the setting I need historically accurate books about the Korean War (non-fiction, or historical-fiction).
I would also appreciate some book suggestions about what shape the homefront (U.S.A) was in during WWII.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
2 AnswersHistory8 years agoBooks that will teach me about/put me in the setting of WW2/WW2 era USA and the War in Vietnam?
I'm going to be writing a novel, but I need to get into the setting I will be writing in. The book will transition from WW2 era USA (not actually in the war, but at home), to Vietnam (actaully in the war).
I need a few book suggestions (non-fiction, historical fiction) that will really help me know more about these eras.
I was looking at "The Things They Carried" as a book on Vietnam, but I will probably need two or three more. I have yet to look for a WW2 era USA book (again, not actually in the war), so I figured I'd start here.
Thanks for the input!
3 AnswersBooks & Authors8 years agoCriticize my writing... painfully?
I'll be starting college in 20 days. I never finished high school and was put in advanced english for what little I attended. The problem with this is that, in ap english, we didn't learn proper grammar. This might sound odd but it's the whole truth. Most of what we did was philosophize and search for allegory in non-allegorical books.
So, I figure, why not study a little online and attempt to write something before I start my writing class in college. I need you to criticize it. Point out grammatical errors, problems with flow, or just generally bad prose.
Best answer gos to whoever lays it on me in a calm way and truly helps me.
Here is a piece that I just got done writing. I plan to tweak it, this is just a rough draft, but please, tell me what you think:
It was a normal day. The skies were clear, no rain in sight. Damian was gingerly riding his bike along the dirt road that connected his parent's house to Maple Street. He was a small boy, born December 16th, 1933. His hair was blond, eyes blue; he had pale skin and a pink sliver of a smile that could make you melt. The only thoughts that ran through his 12 year old mind were those of play, those of fun; those of the lemonade and cookies that his mother was preparing while he rode.
It was a hot day, he had finished his chores early so he could ride around the shady part of the road and escape the blazing sun. This area of the road stretched around 100 meters and was under the constant watch of several American elm trees that Damian's father never bothered to trim. The area beyond the trees was wide open field, covered in grass and teeming with various wildflowers. Damian would occasionally go out and pick some of the flowers to give to his mother. She would always act surprised and ask him “Where ever did you find these?” even though she already knew.
Damian could here the calls for him to come inside. He peddled down the dirt road as fast as he could, going to claim his sweet, lemony prize. When he was almost to the house he slowed down, dropped his bike, and rushed up the four wooden steps that led onto the elegant porch of the large farm house. The house was white, it had four bedrooms, each with it's own chamber pot and commode. It was a nice house, they had gotten it in a will from his uncle David. He had passed when Damian was a baby, taken away by consumption.
Damian walked into the house, making a direct b-line to the dining room where he knew his mother would have his treat laid out. The smell of chocolate chips wafting through the air was heavenly, almost intoxicating and Damian couldn't wait to take that first chewy bite.
“Damian,” his mother, Elanor, said with a smile “what have you been doing child, you're covered in dust!?”
“Aw shucks mom,” Damian said, embarrassed “I was just riding my bicycle out on the road.”
“Well,” his mother continued with her lecture, “today is washing day. I expect you to be as clean a whistle before you go to bed.”
“Yes ma'am,” said Damian as he reached for a cookie.
3 AnswersBooks & Authors8 years agoWere priests drafted in WWII (and a couple of other questions about the 1940s)?
I'm trying to write a historical fiction novel that takes place in the 1940s, so I need to know this bit of information to maintain historical accuracy.
Here are my other questions:
How strong was the women's rights movement at this time, especially in Kansas?
What was the most popular form of music?
How did public schooling work at this time?
How many teenagers were drafted into the war (if any) and did teenagers, ie. 17-18 year olds, go to school.
Best answer to whoever can accurately answer all of these. Bonus points if you cite sources.
3 AnswersHistory8 years agoCalling all vegetarians; what are your thoughts on eating insects?
Well, thoughts?
I personally, being vegetarian myself, have absolutely no remorse for insects and wouldn't mind devouring them in a hearty meal. Why? Well, there are several reasons: There is little to no scientific evidence showing that they feel pain, or have emotions. They breed at an extremely fast rate, eliminating the need to care for their population. As a mass produced food source, the damage to the environment would be minimal (if they were fed plants rather than meat bi products). Finally, many cultures find them delicious (not to mention they may have the capability to end world hunger).
So, basically, I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter. The most well thought out argument will be given best answer. It doesn't have to agree with my point of view either.
Oh, and please, no nonsensical rants on ethics. Provide proof that it is unethical to eat insects and then I'd be happy to listen. :)
12 AnswersVegetarian & Vegan8 years agoCan you install game data onto an external hard drive(PS3)?
Not the save data, the game data.
It's what takes up most of the memory space and would be the only reason I would want an external hard drive.
1 AnswerAdd-ons8 years agoCan you install game data to an external hard drive(PS3)?
I don't mean save data, I mean the game data itself. That is what is taking up most of the space.
