  • What is the best SKS gun to buy?

Looking to buy an SKS. Family member of mine owns a Russian SKS and I absolutely love to shoot it, which is why I am in the market. The only other guns I have my eyes on are the SS 556 and the Springfield M1A. I think they are both a bit much (and long) for what I am looking for.

That being said, what should I be looking for? It seems like the Russians are always the best to buy, but the Chinese paratroopers are also great due to shorter barrel length.

    Opinions?

  • Help deciding on a job?

Here is a short summary. The current job I have is easy, I am in an executive position, I work MAYBE 6 hours a day. Ultimate flexibility, etc. Cake job in a nutshell.

    Pros:

    Easy work

    Very livable pay

    Cons:

    Very long commute

    Unstable work environment

No personal growth/somewhat boring/nowhere further to advance up

The other job I was offered is going to pay $5000+ more a year potentially $10k more a year plus generous bonuses, is literally half the distance (which saves me $2000 in gas a year alone), much more stable work environment, better people to work around, a lot more variety in work, more room for growth, etc. Only real downside here is I am actually going to be working (50 hour weeks), which I am not afraid of doing, but lets not lose focus on what my main goal is here.

Here is where I am having issues deciding.

My main goal is to become a pilot, and that is my MAIN focus. I will have my commercial license in 2 1/2 years, being conservative. So do I just stick it out with my current job and deal with less money but more time to put towards studying/flying, or do I take the better job that will make me more money to put towards funding flying, have more personal growth, as well as serve as a backup in case something happens and I can't fly?

I feel like it is a no-brainer, but I value opinions. Maybe somebody is in the same situation as me, who knows.

    Thanks

  • Subwoofer blows, amp power line fuse blows?

I'm going to reask this question with a little more clarity since it seems there were some issues with that..

    Subwoofer specs

    250W RMS @ 4 ohms

    1000W peak power @ 4 ohms

    Amp specs

    416W RMS @ 4 ohms bridged

    800W Peak power @ 4 ohms bridged

I was running a Pyle 1200W max speaker. The person I picked it up from was running one 12" Pyle (same speaker) and the voice coils blew when I ran it in bridged mode (no fuses yet). He was only running it in single channel mode for 2 ohms though for whatever reason.

RAN GREAT for about 20 minutes. Perfect. No issues. All of a sudden it just stopped playing. Got home, looked the power fuse to the amp and the 50 amp fuse blew. (I'm running 4 gauge wire). NONE OF THE AMP FUSES BLEW.

So I took the speaker inside and hooked it up to a home stereo amp. You could easily hear the voice coil was blown and the speaker was shot.

    Amp still plays other speakers.

What the heck? Speaker wires weren't reversed either.

  • Help choosing wine for formal dinner?

Hey everyone. I am getting reservations put together for a casual-upscale company dinner. There will be about 15 people, but among them the owner-president of the company, so I really want to make a good impression. I have everything taken care of outside of wine choices... I grabbed the wine list from the place, and here are the categories I have to choose from... I was thinking maybe 3 wines, 2 red 1 white. Nobody is a big wine drinker, but everyone may have one glass.

Here are the types available to me

    Chardonnay

    Sauvignon Blanc

    White Pinot

    Rose

    Merlot

    Pinot Noir

    Zinfandel

    Syrah-Shiraz

    Cabernat Sauv

There are about 20 different wines to choose from in each category... I am no wine aficionado, but here is my list to cover, what I think, to be most people's tastes with dinner and an after dinner drink.

To start, here is the dinner menu

    http://www.worthingtoninn.com/menus/dinner.pdf

    1. Riesling or a Gerwurtztraminner

Riesling - Eroica, Chateau St. Michelle & Dr. Loosen, Columbia Valley, Washington 2011

    2. Merlot or a Rose

Merlot - Oberon, Napa Valley, California 2009

Rose - Chateau Revelette, Coteaux d' Aix en Provence, France, 2011

    3. Cabernet Sauv or Zinfandel

Cabernet Sauv - Kaiken, "Ultra", Mendoza, Argentina, 2007

Zinfandel - Joel Gott, California, 2009

    I greatly appreciate the help!

  • Cat pees on bed but only when we're in it?

We adopted a 5 month old kitten from a breeder. She is somewhat skiddish and cowers when people approach her, but she loves being pet and plays frequently.

She won't do anything on her own but sleep and hide until me or my wife come and get her or pet her. She has been sleeping on the bed with us for the past week.

Just a few days ago (4), she was playing on the bed, and out of nowhere, she peed.

Just last night, after cuddling in our laps downstairs and hanging out, we fed her and went to bed. She ate some food, then jumped into the bed. About 10 seconds later she proceeded to pee all over the bed. Not just a few dribbles, she peed a LOT.

I know she uses the litter pan because it is 6 feet from our bed and I scoop it once a day.

So what the heck? Why would she only pee on the bed if we were in it? She is in our room all day, so why wouldn't she just pee on it when we aren't home?

    So confusing...

  • How old are cats when you get them from a breeder (usually)?

    Two questions,

Most breeders I talk to say around 5 months, and they spay/neuter them for you before they send them home to you. Is this normal?

One breeder has a few cats that are one year... Is that too old to be considered a "kitten"?

  • Help picking cat gender for Tonkinese?

I am torn between picking a gender between male and female for my upcoming cat.

Talking to the breeders, it sounds like the Tonkinese males are very "dumb lovers' and are very trusting and caring from the get go, and are very docile and love to be handled as well. Whereas, the females are very conservative and don't necessarily like to be handled, but are very cuddly and loving once a bond is formed.

I just wanted to get some outside opinions, hopefully from owners of a Tonkinese breed.

    Thanks!

  • Will my grass seed make it?

I have about 1/2 acre of yard that I roto tilled, then laid some grass seed down about 7 days ago, somewhat heavily. The mixture is annual and perennial ryegrass mixed with some fescues. I live in Ohio. I laid down some Scotts starter fertilizer, and did the first day watering. It has rained about 4 out of the 7 days so far, but I lightly watered on off days because the soil was still most.

Two things I did not do is rake over the seeds or lay straw down.

I went out today and saw sprouts spread out in very small numbers.

    Any advice? Tips?

    1 AnswerGarden & Landscape9 years ago
  • Do you think my grass seed will germinate?

I roto tilled about an acre (my back yard) about 2-4 inches deep. I then spread out Scotts Starter fertilizer accordingly, then spread out my grass seed (Mixture of annual ryegrass, perennial ryegrass, and some fescues) in a somewhat heavy spread fashion. I then proceeded to water each section with a sprinkler for about 15-30 minutes. It rained the next day, the day after was cloudy, but the ground had a few small puddles so I didn't water that day, then I went and watered each section with a sprinkler for about 15 minutes today.

I don't have any straw down or such because I have read that straw doesn't really do all that much besides keep the birds out or put weeds in your soil. I am sort of on the fence about whether or not I should have put down some straw... but I think maybe it would be too late now?

About how long should I expect to wait until I see some sproutlings? 7 days?

  • 98 Civic AC Compressor not getting power?

So a little rundown. I just installed a new compressor. Go to turn the system on, clutch doesn't engage. I ran a test wire from the battery to the compressor cable and the clutch engages fine and stays engaged. Checked my in car fuses and the engine fuses, and all are fine. Where should I be looking to fix it?

  • Buying a car privately and have some questions?

I live in Ohio, buying it in Arkansas.

Buying a car from somebody out of state. Already test drove it etc, so that end is covered. I trust the seller.

    Anyway, two things.

First one, do I need license plates after I purchase the car? I am going to be out of state and driving it to mine, so do I have to have plates if I have the bill of sale, etc? I would like to not have to worry about shipping his plates back or getting a 30 day temp, but whatever.

Second thing, do we need to get a notary stamp on the title/BOS? I read somewhere that it was not necessary, and was more for the protection of the seller, not the buyer.

  • How much to replace a 97 Honda Civic LX AC?

I am looking at buying a 97 civic LX and the AC does not work. They guy says he is not sure what the deal is with it. So it could just need recharged, or it could need replaced.

How much money am I looking at?

I am pretty savvy with cars but I have never touched an AC system, is it generally something a DIY'er could do?

  • Thumping noise when in reverse or over potholes?

So recently on the front passenger side of my car, I have begun to hear a "thump" at every rotation of my tire, and only at speeds less than 15mph. It happens most commonly when going in reverse, but I also hear it when moving forward, or when I go over a pothole at slow speeds. The noise is not always present, but it is pretty common.

The noise cannot be heard from outside of the car, but only on the inside. I ma lead to believe it is a wheel bearing, but when the car is lifted, I don't get any play in it. I have not taken the tire of to try to see if there is play in the rest of the assembly.

    What could it be?

  • FI or Carb Yamaha R1?

Found a 2000 R1 for $3200, great condition, and a great condition Special Edition 2003 R1 for $4100... I really like the look of the 2000 R1 over the 2003, but the real argument here is if I should spend the extra $900 on fuel injection... Thoughts? Opinions?

I am comfortable working on my own bikes, (I have only owned Carbed bikes), but everybody is telling me to quit buying old technology when FI makes such a huge difference. As an electrical engineer, I completely understand that, but is it REALLY worth $900 more in a situation like this?

  • 500hp or a motorcycle? What would you choose?

So I have the option of either getting a kit for my car that brings me up to 417whp (at 1 bar), or a 600cc motorcycle. Price difference will be about $4000-6000, the bike being cheaper.

Thing is though, I can only use the bike in Spring Summer and early Fall because I live up north, and only on weekends because my drive to work is farther than I am comfortable with driving it every day in heavy traffic. I can do bike maintenance myself, and I also have to pay separate insurance and buy new gear etc for it as well. The bike would be mostly used for back road riding through hills, with friends, etc. The car is my DD and is AWD so I drive it year round, and it has fairly low miles on it. So it will obviously see more use then the bike will by at least 70%.

The second thing to take into account is that I will probably be caught back up next year to get a bike for next spring/summer. So it isn't like I will never have the bike either, but I just can't figure out which I want first.

I plan on going to the track with either one eventually for leisure.

So say money isn't an issue, what would you pick of the two?

Say money comes into play, but isn't a huge deal, what would you pick of the two?

  • What size pump do I need for this wet dry?

I have a 75 gallon tank with a built in overflow and I am going to use a wet/dry sump deal. The sump box measures 20"L x 18"H x 8"W

I am assuming that a 740 gph pump will be good? I was thinking about possibly using an 840gph rio pump or an 1290 gph rio pump. The sump I have looks almost exactly like these found on this website http://www.pro-clear.com/wetdry.html. The dimensions I have are not listed, but between their 60 gallon and 75 gallon sump. I have to go through 1/2" ID hose for my co2 flow, a UV sterilizer, and an in-line heater.

Do you think I will have issues with the sump overflowing with the 1290 gph? Or will that be fine?

  • SD Card won't start (code 10) help?

I have about 500 pictures of my trip to Hawaii on this sd card (8GB SDHC). I went to plug it into my computer and nothing happens. Under "My Computer" it shoes it popping up, but there is no media in it. I tried a few other sd cards to see if it is the reader, and they work fine. I then popped the 8Gb card into my laptop's slot for sd cards, and under device management I get the "Code 10" error under the card. Can anyone help me out on what I need to do to get the pictures off it?
