  • What did the Romans call the Celtic religions?

In my English class today, my professor referred to the religion of the ancient Irish as Wicca. Now, I know that this is not accurate in the least, and so at the end of class I went up to her and said so because Wicca is less than a century old. However, she told me that the term Wicca was coined by the ancient Romans as an insult to the religion they were practicing and that she was trying to use the term because it was one we students might be familiar with. This is not something I'd ever heard before, because I had learned that the term Wicca was coined by someone in the 20th century (some time after Gardner...I can't remember whom actually is given credit), derived from the Old English (not Gaelic) word for "witch". Not wanting to completely ignore my professor's scholarship, I decided to research the Romans' dealings with the Celts, and I cannot find the term "wicca" anywhere (honestly didn't really expect to). Am I missing something? I already know to take most of what this professor says about history with a grain of salt, but I was just wondering if there might be some truth behind what she says, some logical place where she mixed up her facts or some evidence to suggest she's right and I'm not.

  • What is a good way to get in shape for a long distance walk?

My boyfriend and I want to go backpacking across Greece three years for now. We would be gone for the whole summer and on foot most of the way. We want to visit as many temples as possible and have no problem sleeping outside. The thing is, neither of us are in particularly good shape, and I have a heart condition that makes long distance walking difficult for me. Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for our trip (specific temples, towns and cities of interest to lovers of Greek gods, what we should pack, etc.) feel free to also post those.

  • Greek Mythology buffs and Hellenic Pagans: What versions of the story of Prometheus do you know?

I recently answered a question who seemed to think that you can compare Prometheus to Jesus...I didn't see how this worked, so I corrected his mythology. This is what he asked:

"Prometheus was descended from heaven as God incarnate as a man, to save mankind. He was crucified, suffered and rose from the dead. He was called the Word or Logos. Poet Aeschylus 500 years before Jesus in his Play "Prometheus Bound" wrote, "Lo, streaming from the fatal tree, his all-atoning blood!.........When God the great Prometheus, died, for man, the creatures sin". Remember this was all before Jesus. And no claim can be made that Prometheus was copied from the Jesus story."

Now, I can't find any evidence to support his story of Prometheus (and even the quote from the play was taken out of context...) So, I have to ask, what version have you always heard?

  • How do you pronounce Beezlebub?

I've always said bee-zle-bub, but I was watching a video called Soldier, and at one point, the guy says Beezlebub, but he pronounces it bee-eh-zle-bub. This is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkubA6ZZiZg

So, I was wondering, what is the technical pronunciation?

  • Wiccans and witches who have been through college, what tools should I use?

I am a college-bound Wiccan witch, and I've run into a little bit of a problem concerning tools to use in college for ritual. Incense, candles, and obviously an athame are all tools that I cannot use while at college. I have already decided to replace incense with oil scent stick things, and I've functioned without an athame before, but I honestly can't think of something to represent fire other than an athame or candles.
