  • Experienced Hairdressers Please?

I recently coloured my hair using that new Garnier Olia hair dye. It is an ammonia free plant based hair colour. I have medium brown hair, and was thinking that if I used the dark blonde colour it would just add some golden undertones, but wouldn't actually lift my hair because it is ammonia free. Well it lifted my hair at the roots... but not the rest of my hair. I have dark blonde roots and medium brown hair. The contrast is not that bad, I've just been telling people I have reverse ombre hair :) Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get my hair to be one colour again? I know I should go to my hairdresser, but she will kick my butt, and I'm not in the mood to listen to her complain about how I should have just gone to her, and how she has to work so much harder now to fix what I did... sigh. Can anyone give me a non "go to your hairdresser" solution?

  • Do you feel like the world is becoming too politically correct?

What do you think about all of this expectation of political correctness in our society? It seems these days that everything is either sexist, racist or at least culturally insensitive. Is this need to avoid offending others fueled by love and respect for our fellow man, or by fear of litigation?

Despite our continuous efforts as a society to remain politically correct, it doesn't seem like things are getting better in this world, and it seems as though people are finding more and more minutiae to be offended about.

    Thoughts please!

  • Advice re: 12 year relationship possibly ending over stupid fight?

My Boyfriend and I have been together for 12 years. We love each other, but we have gone through a lot over the years. He is a recovering alcoholic, he became an alcoholic when his mom died in 2004, and struggled with it until about 4 years ago. He quit drinking for 3 years, and just had a relapse this past summer for one night, and then quit again and hasn't had a drink since.

I am not going to go into details, but at no point has he ever hit me (or we wouldn't be together) but he has said and done some pretty nasty things to me over the years. I have always forgiven him because I love him, and know that my life is betetr with him in it.

I recently just got into a huge fight with my best friend who is also my cousin. We fought over something ridiculous - I didn't return her call soon enough, and when I explained that I was just busy, she told me that my excuses weren't good enough. I recognized that our toxic friendship could affect our family, so I told her that I thought it was best if we stopped escalating the situation because we were family, but that I thought we should stop hanging out. She disowned me.

I have to go to my grandparents' 55th anniversary party on Saturday and see her and her 2 sisters, and I know it is not going to be good. We also plan to do family photos that day, because EVERYONE in the family is going to be there.

I asked my boyfriend to come - I know that he hates family gatherings because he had a crappy childhood, so unless its something important hosted by my immediate family, I generally don't ask. I explained to him that I needed his support and that it was an important event to me and to my family, and I would really appreciate if he came. He said "I don't want to go, so I'm not going" When I continued to ask him nicely to go, he literally just ignored me and refused to talk to me for the rest of the night. That made me sad, I went to bed in tears.

The next day I tried to explain my reasoning to him - Through my years of being an excellent girlfriend and always being there for him, I thought I had earned the right to at least be listened to when I talk. I just wanted him to start coming to family events. We are common-law husband and wife, he is my family, he should! Family means a lot to me, and I am supposed to mean a lot to him, so its simple, right? My family loves him - he has gone to family events in the past. I don't understand what the big deal is. For him, it's a dinner for a couple hours that maybe he doesn't feel like going to. For me, it would be having the support of my boyfriend with me when I have to face a difficult situation, and also having him in the family photos that mean so much to my 80 something year old grandparents who won't be around forever. I explained all of this, he said "No, I don't want to go and I am not going, and we're not talking about it anymore so you can stop trying". Then he ignored me again.

Well now I was infuriated! I got a little nasty and straight up said "you owe me. I have put up with a lot of your crap over the years" I got specific about the times that he had really hurt me to prove my point. I called him selfish for saying no, I called him childish for ignoring me. I told him that no one likes their inlaws, but they put up with them because they love their spouses, and that if he loved me he would just go since I am begging him. I said "I deserve a boyfriend who cares enough about me to do these things for me and not turn it into a fight every time".

Well he lost it. He told me to leave him if I felt that way, he screamed at me, he was acting like he does when he drinks. He said I treat him like crap! I am sick if I think it means he doesn't love me! He is never going to another family event again! He doesn't care about my family or what I think!. He doesn't owe me anything! He was done with me, he didn't care anymore. I was shcoked, and asked if he would rather break up than just do this one thing for me! He said he was sick of being treated like crap and he was done, he doesn't care anymore. Then he started telling me if I don't like it to run home to my parents and that he will get half of the money from the house.

I am shocked, yeah, it was a low blow on my part, but he has said far worse many times when he was drunk. I don't want to break up with him, but I don't want to stay with someone who won't support me when I need it. When he acts like a ****, I forgive him. When I say some insulting things one time he's talking about breaking up?

I tried to talk to him this morning, I apologized for being insulting, but he was ignoring me and it was the only way to get a response. He told me he was not coming home to another fight tonight,. instead he was going out for drinks with the guys. SERIOUSLY!?. So now he's falling off the wagon again to punish me?

  • Discrimination in Makeup?

Now, I should state first that I'm a white girl, but this is something that has been weighing heavily on my mind as of late. What are your thoughts on high-end cosmetic companies catering to paler complexions? I just went down through the list of cosmetic companies at Sephora, and made a list of those that sell absolutely no face products for black girls:

    Benefit

    Clinique

    Dior

    Fresh Cosmetics

    Givenchy

    Guerlain

    Josie Maran

    Laura Mercier

    LORAC

    Smashbox

    Stila

    Urban Decay

    Yves Saint Laurent

Now, that may not seem like a lot, but those are some of the better-selling high-end makeup brands available at Sephora. Aside from those listed above, most of the cosmetics companies on Sephora.com carry several light shades of face makeup, and only one darker shade, or the token black shade if you will.

Hope is not lost, there are a few companies that carry a wide range of shades from the lightest white to the darkest brown, and I tip my hat to them:

    Cover FX

    Illamasqua

    Makeup Forever, and

    Bare Escentuals.

So what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's a matter of cost to introduce a second line of face products for darker skin? Perhaps the high quality pigments used to create the darker richer shades are too costly? Perhaps you think that there is no demand, for which to supply?

Or do you think this is flat out discrimination?

A friend once said that it's just like hair products, black and white people have different types of hair, therefore they make hair products specifically formulated for both types... that's not racism.

I can appreciate hair products, because they are trying to create unique products for different types of hair. Is it the same for cosmetics? Do black girls have different skin needs than white girls? Because as far as Iknow, we all have the same types of skin, just different colours.

I am personally of the opinion that if a company is going to release a line of face makeup, that they should go the socially responsible and ethically sound route and cater to all skintones, not just the ones they think will sell well, or the ones catered to their target market.

I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this.

I am trying to get the most bang for my buck, so I'm looking at getting combination sets and collections. So, what set or collection under $60.00 would you have me buy? I already own almost everything Urban Decay, so lets exclude that one... and I'm not too keen on bronzers, summer is almost over!

  • Tips for wedding makeup?

I am doing makeup for a wedding in early August. I will be making-up the bride, the mother of the bride and the maid of honour.

I intend to use primers and makeup setting sprays for extra hold. The bride will be wearing a lip stain so she won't kiss-off her lips, and she will be wearing waterproof makeup so she won't cry it off.

Can you provide any other makeup tips that will help? I am particularly concerned about their makeup showing up in pictures. I don't want them to be washed out. Thanks!

  • Makeup artists only please, wedding tips?

A friend of a friend is getting married, and she can't afford a professional makeup artist. My friend asked me if I would be willing to help her out. Now I'm not a makeup artist, technically, but I do have a lot of experience and I am pretty darn good at it. I told her, worst case scenario, she will get some ideas of what she does and doesn't want for the big day, best case, she will like it and ask me to do it for her.

We did the initial consultation, and she loved it. Then she informed me that I would be doing her maid of honour (my friend) and her mom as well... Then she said that as much as they loved it, they think I need to cake the makeup on to make it more photogenic. I wasn't going to charge her, but this is a lot of my time, and to save money I am using as much of my own products as possible.

I had originally said that a gift certificate for Sephora would be payment enough, that way I could replace some of my makeup. How much do you think the gift certificate should be for? How much would a makeup artist charge to do 3 people?

Also, do you have any tips to make her more photogenic? I plan to eye and face primers, waterproof eye makeup, and setting sprays. Probably going with a lip stain so it won't come off. And we are going with a very natural look, peachy gold/pink and brown. She wants me to darken it, but as a super pale blonde who rarely wears more than mascara, I am hesitant to use black to make the look more dramatic.

Any tips that any makeup artists could provide, that would be great!

  • I think my T.V. is haunted?

My husband and I just bought a house in April. The seller offered to give us her old TV (probably because the damned thing was too heavy to get out of the house) and a deep freezer as part of the deal, so we accepted.

After we got possession of the house, but before we moved in, we spent a lot of time there doing renovations and whatnot I went over one night to do some painting and found the t.v. on. Not only was it on, but the channel had been changed, and the volume was on full-blast. We hadn't hooked up our satelite service yet, so we had it on a video channel so we could play video games or listen to music on the x-box... but the tv was on channel 2, with full-blown static noise blaring out of the speakers (this TV has a sub-woofer built in, and it gets painfully loud)... I definitely believe in ghosts, but I decided that we don't know this TV, maybe there's a short somewhere in the circuitry, maybe there was a timer set that we weren't aware of, or maybe when I was in there the night before, showing my cousin the new place, I accidentally turned it on, changed the channel and turned the volume up... though I'm not in the habit of losing large chunks of memory or doing things unconsciously.

On Sunday night I was in the basement with my cousin, we were watching TV, everything was fine, then she, my husband and I went out to watch some fireworks. My hubby and I eventually came home and went to bed. The next day at 3:00p.m. I went downstairs to watch TV with my father and the satellite wouldn't work. I figured the batteries in he remote were dead, so I just relocated us upstairs to the TV in the living room and didn't really give it another thought until I picked up my hubby at work at 11:00 pm.

I asked him if he took the batteries out of the remote in the basement, and he said yes, but he put them back and they were fine. I told him that the satelite wasn't working down there. So we went downstairs to take a look at it. It takes 2 people to move the TV away from the wall. It's old and weighs between 200 and 300 lbs. So we pulled it away from the wall, and my hubby says, well that's the problem right there... you took the A/V cables out.

I looked at him and said no... I didn't. What do you mean? He said that the cord that connects the TV to the satelite receiver box was missing.

No one was in my house to have done this. We have a cat, but she is not in the habit of unhooking cables, and she couldn't get behind the TV anyway. There is NO LOGICAL EXPLANATION as to why my TV would turn on by itself, and my cables would go missing.

Any thoughts? do you think my TV is haunted? or do you think it is my cat? or do you think someone is messing with me? I honestly don't think my hubby would do that. And he seemed genuinely perplexed as well.

  • Ideas for an 80th Birthday Cake?

My grandfather is turning 80, and my cousins and I are planning a party for his big day. He's a diabetic, and we know a woman who makes amazing professional cakes (i.e. a replica Gibson custom Guitar, and an ATV with spinning wheels and moving handles). She has agreed to make us acake using stevia instead of sugar, but we have two problems:

    1. It's also my uncle's birthday, and we need to include him in the cake somehow...

    2. We have no idea what to put on his cake.

Back in the day, my gramps used to deliver ice on horseback.

He also used to be a crane operator, president of the Canadian SCUBA Association, owned his own kitchen design/build business.

He traveled the world with my grams in a motorhome.

I'm stuck, I need something both genreic and specific.

  • How do I fill the void?

My best friend just moved away about 2 weeks ago... far, far away. I doubt I will ever even see him again, though he keeps telling me he is going to fly me out to visit him once he gets settled in and buys a house.

The thing is, I am SO lonely now, and a little depressed. My boyfriend works nights Sunday to Tuesday, and on those nights I used to hang out with my best friend... but now I sit at home watching TV or reading until I go to bed. I miss him so much! I can't even really talk to my boyfriend about it... he gets a little jealous when I talk about my BFF, even though he has no reason to, I would never escalate the relationship, and we are SO not even attracted to each other. Plus I have been with my boyfriend for like 10 years... if he hasn't figured out that I am committed to him yet, he's an idiot.

Anyway, yesterday I got an email from my BFF, and he said he is going to fly me out there when he buys a house, I won't have to pay for anything. I asked my boyfriend if he would be upset if I went to visit him alone, and he said "sort of". I understand his jealousy, we are very close and that could be intimidating to someone who is insecure, but I really wish I had someone to talk to abouty how much I miss him.

I need suggestions on how to fill the void in my social life. I'm all alone Sundays-Tuesdays. I have other friends, but they are all busy with kids and husbands/wives... I could go out or start a group, but honestly after work and the commute, I just don't have the drive.

  • Are you okay with mandatory Swine Flu vaccinations?

I'm definitely not! These vaccines are completely experimental, and there's no way to determine the potential long-term damage.

They are talking about making this vaccine mandatory, and if you refuse the shot they will put you in government quarantine.

This vaccination is killing people! U.K. reported over 25 deaths so far. The vaccination is directly linked to a deadly nerve disease. Children and the elderly don't even have the antibodies necessary to fight back against the effects of the vaccine.

So, what are you going to do when they start forcing vaccines on people?

If they make this mandatory, I'm falling off the grid.

I just want to know what you've tried and whether you liked it. This company seems to be hit or miss, some things are amazing (High Beam and Powderflage) and some are pointless (Ahem, Eye Bright Pencil).
