  • When to use a matched pairs instead of a one-sample t-test with H0 = 0?

The data is two sets of values: "before" and "after" some kind of treatment or intervention on a group of subjects. Example:

    Subject_____1_____2_____3_____4

    Before______20____15____17____20

    After_______30____10____17____25

Why would you use a matched-pairs test instead of a one-sample t-test where you calculate the mean difference between the before and after score and compare it to a "population" where there is no difference (mu = 0). In other words, H0: mu = 0 and Ha: mu ≠ 0

    Thanks!

  • Statistics: test for significance with no standard deviation?

Does anyone know a formula (or syntax for SAS) that I can use to find a p-value when comparing the prevalence of a disease in a sample to the prevalence of the disease in the population when n for the sample is known but I do not know the standard deviation of the sample or population?

  • How do I integrate (x^2+3)/√(x^2+9)?

I have used x=3tanΘ and wind up with ∫[3(tanΘ)^2+1]secΘdΘ. I have tried all the substitutions (sec = 1/cos, tan^2+1 = sec^2) but I can't figure out how to simplify it in a way that allows me to integrate. Thanks!
