  • Totally stuck on naming my new hamster!?

I had hamsters all the time when I was younger, and ended up with a 4 week old boy today. He is pure white with ruby eyes. I m at a complete loss for a name. I seem to be able to find the perfect girls names, but none for boys!

I am considering Olaf. I think its pretty cute, and obviously fits his color, but I dont know if I will like it long term.

I want something cute, but nothing like cuddles, cookie, Toffee, etc. Real names are fine. I was also thinking about maybe a name from Harry Potter? I dont know, any suggestions will help! Thank you :p

    Dwarf Gourami?

I have a 10 gallon tank currently cycling, and I need to know how to stock it. First I wanted about 6 guppies, but Now im thinking, maybe 3 male guppies and a dwarf gourami?

I have never had any fish besides bettas. My current bettas include a male in a 5.5 gallon tank and a female in a 3 gallon. Both filtered/heated/planted.

I do not have any experience with the dwarf gourami's or guppies. Will my tank be suitable for them? It has some current, because of the filter and 4 inch airstone, but not much. It is planted, there are only a few for now, but I will be getting more, and a floating one for the gourami.

How do I feed them? They are both omnivores, so I was thinking a variety of Omega One super veggie pellets(contains spirulina), Omega One color tropical flakes, and Omega One super color pellets. I feed my bettas omega one and they love it and its ingredients are great. I also have frozen bloodworms as a weekly treat. I have sinking algae wafers as well for my snails an shrimp, would either of them like these occasionally?

Any other tips, or stocking ideas if this wont work out? Thanks!

  • Advice on cycling a tank with Safe Start and Live plants?

I am new to fish keeping. I currently have 2 tanks, a 5.5 gallon with a male betta, mystery snail and 4 ghost shrimp, and a 3gal with a female betta, tiny nerite snail and 2 ghost shrimp.

These tanks have lots of live plants and are going through a fish in cycle.

I am totally confused with cycling tanks. I understand the idea of it, why its important, etc. I just dont know how to do it with live plants. From my understanding, when using live plants, the tanks cycle differently.

But my question isnt about my current set ups. They are doing great. Weekly water changes are keeping ammonia below .25ppm, and they fish are active and healthy.

My question is about a new tank. It is a 10 gallon. My plan for this is to be a male guppy tank. I want to eventually stock it with 6-7 guppies. After lots of research, this is what my plan is. Please let me know if its a good one, or what I can improve! I am very new at this. (No room, will put plan in comments.)

  • Give me info on guppy care!?

Eventually I will be getting a tank of guppies. The tank is 10 gallons. How many guppies will be good for that size? I know its generally 1inch of fish per gallon and in that case I could fit 10, but I was thinking more like 5-6? Even number or odd? Does it even matter?

I have a heater, but is it needed? Its 50W and adjustable.

Also, live plants. I love them, and will definitely have them. Do guppies prefer more swimming room and less plants, or a densely planted tank? Maybe somewhere in the middle?

For my betta tanks I use prime to condition the water, along with stress coat. Is this good for the guppies?

What about food? I feed my bettas Omega One pellets, and occasional frozen Bloodworms. What pellets are recommend for guppies? And will they enjoy from bloodworms occasionally?

With my bettas I always do fish in cycles. Can I do this with the guppies, or do I need to cycle the tank before hand? I have never done this before. I do have an API freshwater liquid master test kit.

Tankmates? My bettas have snail and ghost shrimp tank mates. Are thee suitable for guppies, or will the harrass/eat the shrimp?

I plan to get only males, as I dont want to deal with baby guppies at this time. Any other info you can give me would be great! Thanks!

  • How to clean live plants and filter/heater, and the tank after sick fish?

I had a 10gallon tank with a male betta. He recently got sick with what I believe was dropsy. I started him on Kanaplex but he passed away. I took out the snails and Live plants before I doses the meds, because I was told it would kill them.

I am interested in getting guppies for this tank, but I dont know how to make sure its clean. Is there even a way to clean live plants without killing them? what about the snails and actual tank?

I threw away the filter cartridge, but how to I clean the actual filter? Thanks!

  • Advice on stocking new tank with male betta, apple snail and ghost shrimp?

I currently have a male betta and apple snail living in a 2.5gal tank. I bought a new 5.5gal tank and plan to add a few ghost shrimp with my betta and snail, after they move into the 5.5gal. Tomorrow I am going to get more silk plants, and a Java Fern. I already have baby dwarf tears and a tall plant i'm not sure of the name. In the finished tank there will be a few different live plants, silk pants and hiding caves. When I am ready to add everyone, is is best to add the betta and snail, wait for them to adjust and then add the shrimp? Or add the shrimp first and then the betta/snail, or all at once? Does it matter?

Also, I know betta's and ghost shrimp can be a hit or miss, but I would like to try it out. My betta is pretty docile and doesn't care at all about the apple snail, so I have a feeling he will be fine. And I will try to get bigger sized shrimp, and not the smaller ones able to be eaten.

  • Can I keep a male betta, mystery snail and a couple african dwarf frogs in a 5 gal tank?

I currently have a male betta in a 2gal tank with a mystery snail. Recently the filter stopped working, and while I could just buy a new filter, I think its time for a tank upgrade. I was looking at my options, and while space wont allow for a 10 gal (I have so many tanks, cages, etc in my room) A 5gal should fit. I found one that comes with a filter, and hood with a light. I have a couple live plants I would move to the new tank, as well as a couple decors, though I would get a new one to take up some space.

I would love to add couple african dwarf frogs to the tank, but is 5 gal big enough? My betta is rather docile, hes never sow any interest the snail. I know they can sip at their eyes and antennae, but hes never done that. If I provide enough hiding spots should everything be good?

Also what do I feed the frogs? My betta eats mostly dried insects for bettas, which he loves. He also gets occasional pellets but prefers the insects. Will the frogs eat these as well, or i there a special diet I need to get for them?

Im going today to buy the new tank. Im getting it whether or not I can get the frogs as well, but it would be cool to have the frogs in a few weeks, if I an provide proper care. Thanks for the advice!

  • Introducing two pairs of rats to each other?

I have 2 black Berkshire brothers who are 11 months old, and i have 2 blue dumbo brothers who are 5 weeks old. Right now, I have them in separate cages. My older boys are in a huge permanent cage, while my babies are in a smaller cage. Eventually I want them to all be in the big one together.

Their cages are next to each other, and over the past week i have been switching toys and fabric from the cages, so they can smell each others scents. The babies think nothing of it, but my big boys smell the object for a few minutes.

Today, I want to introduce them. I will introduce them every day for a few weeks before housing them together.

So my question is, Do i do one big rat and one little rat at a time, or put all of them in there together?

This will take place in my bathroom. i mopped so my big boys dont think its there territory since they have played in there before. Anything else i should do? Anyone have experience doing this? Im nervous because ive never seen my boys around other rats. I don't want anybody hurt. i will have a spray bottle and glove if anything happens.

    Any advice is appreciated!

  • Names for male rats?

Today, while at a reptile expo i found some blue dumbo rats, and got two boys. I have two rats already named Reid and Jack.

  • I think my rat is sick!?

One of my rats, Reid, has been sneezing for a few days now, but his breathing seems clear and all, but just a few minutes ago i heard him squeaking/coughing. It was like a half cough with s squeak. idk how to explain this. He also keeps chewing and moving his mouth like he is eating something but he isn't. I don't want to take him to the vet if there isn't anything wrong because i don't have much money, and im not sure its opened since its almost christmas. He is sneezing a lot right now. Anything i can do for him until i take him to a vet? Should i take my other rat as well? He is only sneezing but not nearly as much or as bad. Thanks for your help, Merry Christmas.

  • Can rats have salt/mineral licks? And cage decor ideas?

I'm in the process of looking for cheap things to add to my rat cage and finding them fun things to do. I've heard that salt/mineral lick things at pet stores are good for them, but is this true? I don't want to given it to them if it's unhealthy... I have my two boys on a very healthy diet so if this isn't healthy I'd rather them not have it. Thanks! Also, anyone have any ideas for cage ideas or fun toys? I want my boys to be as entertained as possible.

  • What Rat cage should i upgrade to?

Currently, i have my 11 week old boys in a cage that's 16inL x 12inW x24inH. It has 2 complete levels and a half level at the top. I know this cage is small, which is why im getting a bigger cage before my rats are full grown. They love their cage though, i've added bird toys, ropes, hammocks, and cat toys.

Any recommendations of what cages i should get? I am on a budget. I've got $160 from my birthday, about $70 of which i'm using to go skiing this christmas. So I'm looking for a cage under $70. If i cant find a good one under $70, i will wait until after christmas, since i will have more money then. And im not getting a job until summer, so don't suggest that :p

I would rather get one at petsmart/petco, rather than ordering online. But ill look at every option :) Thanks!

  • Rat Food Questions????????

My rats love food xD Currently i feed them Mazuri Rat diet (blocks), and a dry mix i make myself that consists of Cheerios, Kashi whole grain cereal, Dried Cranberries, dried bananas, dry pasta, blue buffalo dog food, and dry oatmeal. They get that every other day. I also feed them veggies about 2 times a week, and occasionally some baby food, or mix baby food with their dry mix.

What else can i give them?

I want them to have a healthy variety. They get bored if i feed them the same thing for a few days straight, so i want to have many options.

My dry mix is running out, what should i put in the next dry mix?

Im definitely going to use Kashi, and cheerios, and dog food, since its their favorite, but i need some other options to mix in there with it. I want to keep it new. :) Oh and they are both males btw :p

  • How to bond with my new baby rats?

I went to alot of different places yesterday, looking to buy pet rats, and i found 2 young brothers, who were up for adoption, because they couldnt be sold. (They were born in the store from a female that came in pregnant, and its against the stores policy to sell them) They were the only 2 left, and they are 6 week old dumbos. They are both Blue and white, but Reid, is fully blue with a small star shape of white on his belly, and then Jack is blue with his who sides and belly white. They are sweet and curious little guys, and seem really healthy!

When i open the cage, they huddle in the back corner, but once i get them out, they will sit on my shoulder, climb all over, and play, but i really want them to get sop used to me that they come to the cage door when i open it. I tried offering them food, but they just sniff it. Ive tried so many different food items, but they ignore it. Thanks for the help!

  • Female rat names?????????

Im finally getting a pair of female rats in a week or so, and im beginning to set up their cage tomorrow, and i need names. They will be female dumbos, and im hoping one will be white with some blue, since its my fav rat color.

If i get a mostly white one, with some blue, i will most likely name her Yue. (You-A) It means moon in Chinese :p Im not sure about the other one, but id like some choices, and then when i get them ill choose :)

I like unique names, or any that are really cute. I've got pets named, Pepper, Zukko, Oliver, Tiger, Azula, Fatboy, Blondie, Toph, Macie, Simon, Chester, Magickarp, Crackers, Lola, Mona, Baby, Sugar, Blueberry, Timmy, Quentin and Lilly, so none of those xD

I was thinking maybe Luca, or Charlie. i think they are cute girl names :P But i want a lot of options!

    Thanks!

  • How to make my hamster comfortable?

My hamster Mocha is really old, weak, and im pretty sure she wont live to much longer. She almost 4 years old. Shes had a hard life. I got her when she was a baby, and her teeth were messed up, so they didn't align, so they didn't file down, so they were always growing to long. So one time when i took her to the vet to get them clipped, the vet was gone, so the assistant took her. He used normal scissors, and even cut the side of her lip! I was so pissed at him. He didn't even make me pay. A couple days later, her teeth completely fell out, and never grew out.

Now, since a couple months, shes been having trouble walking, she hobbles around for food and water, and her fur is really weird feeling, and she has like dandruff. I guess because she can't clean herself? She doesn't have wet tail, but she does have some solid poo on her backside a lot because she cant move around to much, so she stays in her nest to use the bathroom. I am also almost positive shes deaf. If i whisper her name, or tap the glass gently, she ALWAYS wakes up and comes to play. Now i call her name, tap, anything, and no movement. Also, she breathes really fast, then slow. Its weird.

She still eats, and drinks fine. And i don't think she is in much pain, so I'm not going to have her put to sleep. I'm not going to take her to the vet, because shes old, there's nothing to do, and i don't want her stressed.

I'm scared to hold her because i don't want to hurt her. Shes so weak. I still hold her to comfort her every once in a while, and i still give her her fave treat - Scrambled egg. How else should i make her comfortable? Thanks :) Sorry its so long Dx

  • My rabbits got in a fight!?

Yesterday i found 2 mini lops rabbits in a tiny cage with no food/water with a little index card that said free. So i took them, to find them a home. I never planned on keeping them since i already have 5 rabbits. We put them in a spare cage, and they were fine, but when i checked on them a while ago i saw blood, and one rabbit has a hople straight through its ear, and the other has a bloody spot on the bottom of its foot, that wont stop bleeding. My parents aren't home and i dont know what to do. I put them in separate pens in the back yard. I was going to start looking for a home for them together today, but i guess they will have to go seperatly.. Any advice?

  • Question about spaying and neutering rabbits?

we have 5 rabbits. 4 are lion heads. We have the father, mother and their 2 babies (boy and girl) and then a holland lop. We love having them play in the yard, but we only have 2 pens. So it takes a long time to switch them all out. So we were thinking about getting the males neutered, so they can all play together without fights and more babies xD The 2 females already get along, but after the neuter we will have to introduce the males. Is this a good plan? When we talked to the vet, they said its best to do males instead of females, because the females aren't aggressive to each other, and neutering the males would make them less aggressive! Thanks.

  • So me and my dog were stung by bees..?

me and my mom decided to take the dogs for a walk at the park today. So we went, and we let one of our dogs off leash so she could run, and i walked the other. So my dog who was off the leash, was going in the woods, so i called her back and stepped in between some trees getting her back, when i notices things flying around me, and felt something hit my hand. So i got stung only once on the hand. I was freaking out and screaming/running to my mom, and she got out the stinger, Then we notices they were all over my pants, trying to sting me through my jeans, so i threw myself on the ground and rolled xD. So we got home and My dog who was on leash was acting weird, he hid under the bed, and bit my sister. So once i got him out, we found a sting mark thin on his ear, and a stinger on his back. We looked for more, but he tried biting again. So we have him benedryl, and he has been hiding in closets/under the bed all day. I understand though, my hand isn't swollen no more, but it hurts so bad!

So is there anything else i can do to help my pain, and his? Thanks!
