  • What is wrong with my ignition?

My Nissan Titan truck has a problem starting. Occasionally, when I turn the key, the ignition just clicks and it sounds like a dead short. If I rock the steering wheel a little, it starts just fine. It only happens now and then, and starts fine otherwise. What is wrong?

  • What causes my washing machine to fill very slowly?

I have a Westinghouse clothes washer. When it fills, the water flow is very slow. I checked the hoses, and there are no blockages or kinks. It started happening a couple of weeks ago, and before that, it worked fine. It doesn't make any difference if I select hot or cold water.

  • Is there another semi-automatic 8MM Mauser rifle?

I saw an Egyptian Hakim 8MM rifle the other day. Before that, every 8MM I have seen was a bolt action. I have a German GEW 98 rifle, but I thought it would be neat to have an automatic in the same caliber.

Does anybody know of another maker of an 8MM auto?

  • What's a good bow to start deer hunting with?

I'm thinking about getting a bow and see if archery hunting is for me. I don't want to spend a bunch of money before I figure it out, so I have been looking at pawn shops, etc. I have seen several Bear Whitetail Hunter bows in 60 to 70 pound pull and was wondering if these are good bows to get started with.

Also, could I get an idea as to the effective range for shooting deer. I know it will depend on my accuracy, but what distance can I expect to be able to shoot a deer and kill it cleanly?

  • How can I safely unload a muzzle loader rifle?

I bought a .50 caliber muzzle loader at a garage sale, and the owner told me he had bought it used 20 years ago and had never fired it. The nipple that holds the percussion cap is missing and the threaded hole is stripped. When I looked into getting it re-tapped, I discovered that the gun is loaded. I bought a screw-type bullet puller that attaches to the end of the ramrod, but all I have managed to do is screw into the ball and pull out shards of lead. The ball isn't coming out. I am cautious about putting my hand on the ramrod at the end of the barrel, but can't seem to drive the screw far enough into the ball to get a good grip. Since the load has been in there so long, I don't want to consider firing the gun, even if I could get a nipple screwed into it.

    Any ideas?

  • What's a good finish for the wooden stock on a rifle?

I have an old rifle that is in good shape mechanically, but the stock has a lot of scratches and discolored areas in the finish. I used to restore antique furniture, and used lots of different types of finish, but I was wondering what would be the best to use on a gun.

  • How does the .17Mach2 compare to the .17HMR?

I have been wanting to get a .17HMR for target shooting and possibly small varmints. Yesterday, I saw a CZ rifle chambered in .17M2 that I can buy pretty cheap, and I was wondering if anyone has shot both and can compare and contrast them. I looked at the cartridges, and it looks like the HMR is a necked-down .22 Magnum, and the Mach2 is a necked down .22LR. Is that about right?

  • Where can I buy the forearm part of the stock for a Perfection 12 gauge single shot shotgun?

I have an old 12 gauge s/s shotgun that is missing the wooden forestock. The only marking on the gun is the word "perfection" stamped on the receiver. I know it's not a real valuable firearm, but it has some sentimental value. Is there a source for "generic" stocks? I have some experience in woodworking, and could probably modify it if necessary.

  • Does anyone have a recipe for pierogies?

When I was a kid, there were a lot of Czech and German restaurants that served pierogies. I can find these neat little filled pasta treats in the frozen food department at the store, but I'd really like to try making them from scratch with different fillings. I'm not a great cook, but can follow directions pretty well, so if you know how to make the pasta part, I'd appreciate it.

  • Does the bayonet make a difference on a Mosin Nagant 44?

I am thinking about getting a MN Model 44 carbine, and I have read here several times that the gun is designed to shoot with the bayonet extended. If extending the bayonet changes the point the bullet hits, can't I just sight it in with the bayonet folded or remove the bayonet and sight it in that way? I don't relish the questions I'll get at the range if I set up on the firing line looking like I'm about to go charging up a hill with fixed bayonets.

  • Anybody familiar with Mowrey black powder rifles?

I have a .50 caliber Bicentennial Model 606 Hex-barreled rifle made by Mowrey Gun Works in Olney, TX (it doesn't exist anymore - I know the guy who owned it). Anyway, I bought it at a garage sale about 15 years ago, and it's been gathering dust in my safe. It needs some repairs to the trigger mechanism and the nipple threads are stripped out. I plan to get it fixed, but I was wondering where I can find parts. Also, once it's repaired, where can I find the recommendations for powder loads and such? This is my first foray into black powder.

  • Anybody familiar with a Steyr 8x56?

I saw a Steyr 8x56 at a pawn shop for a little over $100 today. I have a 8MM Mauser, and I know the cartridges are different (8x57 vs 8x56), but I was wondering is these rifles are any good. I am beginning to collect old military rifles, and I was wondering if it would be a worthwhile addition.

Also, I've seen the guns on a few websites, but the ammo seems to be really scarce. And, a website I saw said that the gun requires a clip to load, and it was not included. Anybody know where I can get a clip?

  • Is the Mosin-Nagant 91-30 rifle much more accurate than the 1944 carbine version?

I am thinking about getting one for plinking, and maybe deer hunting, and I was wondering if the shorter barrel of the carbine sacrifices any accuracy. I like the looks of the carbine better. I doubt seriously I'd ever shoot over 150 yards.

  • What's wrong with my wireless connection?

I have a Dell laptop, and I set up a Linksys wireless system on my DSL line. Just about every time I turn on my laptop, it won't connect to the wireless network, even though the network shows up as an automatic connection. The network shows up on the "available networks" when I right-click on the icon at the bottom of the screen. If I right click and select "repair", it goes through the steps to repair the connection, but has a message that it "cannot connect to the wireless network". But, if I then click on "available networks", it connects to my home network, and everything's OK. Did I make a mistake setting up the network, or is there a problem with my computer?

  • Where can I find out the meanings of the markings on my 8mm Mauser?

I recently bought an old 8mm Mauser, and I was wondering what all the markings on the receiver and barrel mean.

Was there a manufacturing change that makes them more valuable?

  • Do you know where I can shoot a rifle 300-400 yards in the Dallas / Ft Worth area?

I know of a couple or ranges in the Ft Worth area that have 100 yard lanes, but I'd like to try my rifle at longer ranges.

  • Does ammunition have a shelf life?

I inherited quite a bit of ammunition (.22 rimfire, .30-30, 12 gauge plastic shotgun shells) that is at least 25 years old. It's still in the original boxes and has been stored in a house all this time. There is no corrosion on any of the shells. Is the ammo safe to use? Have they probably lost some power? I have some guns that have a lot of sentimental value, and I'd hate to tear them up. If it's not a good idea to shoot it, what's the best way to dispose of it?

  • What do you think of the Mosin Nagant 7.62x54 rifle?

I have seen them for as little as $100, and I was thinking about getting one for target practice and possibly deer hunting. I looked up the ballistics of the round, and it seems pretty impressive. Can a scope be mounted on it reasonably cheaply? My eyes are getting a little old for open sights.

  • Is a small split in the brass significant?

After shooting my Winchester 94 30-30 recently, I noticed one of the shells has a small split (about 1/4" long) parallel to the length of the shell right where the diameter necks down. I shot 10 shells, and only one shows the crack. Is this indicative of a serious problem?
