  • HP Officejet 6500 will not copy or scan-- help?

My HP 6500 is installed properly (I tried on a Windows 7 Machine as well as a Mac), but it will not scan or copy. I've tried running the utilities as well as doing resets of the machine. The blue light does, in fact, turn on when it's scanning and the bar moves-- but it just brings an all-black screen. Any ideas?

It prints just fine, for what it's worth.

  • Can you say "I'm going to the grocery" versus "I'm going to the grocery store"?

Some dictionaries have "grocery" as the store itself, but this seems incorrect to me.

The dictionary's do not match up with the proper grammar or manual of style. It would simply not make sense, the same way you can't say "I'm going to the butcher"-- a butcher's is a type of shop, so you need to use it as a descriptor. A better example would be how you wouldn't say "I'm going to the candy"; it would, at the least, need to be possessive.

I think it may be used, however it is grammatically incorrect since the "adjective" is "grocery" and the noun is "store," explaining the type of store. The store that sells groceries. As you notice, we also do not say "I'm going to the groceries'." You could say "I'm going to the grocer's," however. Also, in a similar way, let's look at butcher's/butcher shop. You don't say "I'm going to the butchery."

These are imperfect analogies, I realize, but they express the rule, methinks. The thing is, a grocery is a TYPE of store (in the same way a toy store is a type of store), and it describes the item (in the singular) that you're purchasing there. The car dealership, the toy store, the candy shop, etc. You don't just say the first word as the noun itself, since in this case it actually functions differently. It's a compound noun, right?

I wish I could find a direct citation, but it is a grammatical rule of thumb in this adjective/compound word.

  • I left my headlights on for about two hours. Will it recharge on its own or do I need a jump?

I've let it sit for the past 40 minutes or so-- if I let it hang out for another hour or so, will it recharge enough for me to turn the car over? I can hear it trying to turn.

I'd rather not drag someone to jump my car if I don't have to.

  • Can an employer without a check if you don't do an exit interview?

My previous employer is refusing to mail me my final check without an exit interview, but I'm no longer in-state. Is this legal?

  • A little frontal thinning -- what hairstyle? (Pic included)?

Hey there. I'm 24 and considering a few different options. I have slight frontal thinning (on Propecia, now, actually). I am debating on doing a shorter Caesar type cut, doing a short buzz, or moving my hair more toward the center and making it shorter (unsure what that type of cut is called). If you have an opinion, or another idea, let me know. Thanks!

  • Teach for America (TFA) 5-minute lesson plan?

I need help trying to figure out a good topic that I can cover in five minutes for the Teach for America final interview. I'm going into English for high schoolers, so I'm really not sure what I could feasibly cover that quickly. I was considering hyperbole, but honestly, I have no earthly idea.

  • If I get a Master's in English, can I teach high school in VA?

I have a BA in Theatre and Business (dual-majors). I'm looking into getting my Master's Degree in English at a University in Virginia (either VCU or George Mason). Would that allow me to teach English at a high school level? I know I could at a collegiate level.

I mean, besides the obvious tests-- would it fulfill the degree requirement?

  • How do I teach English without a BA in English? I have a BA in Theatre & BS in Business Administration?

I'm looking at going back to school for my Master's, but I wouldn't be licensed to teach English, would I? What schools are worth looking into in particular, and what program options do I have? I really am passionate about this.

Also, as a tie-in, what are the chances of getting some sort of assistanceship? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The more detailed the answer, the better.

  • Can I get my Master of Teaching without having been an English or Teaching major in undergrad?

I went to a school in NC and dual-majored in business and theatre. I want to teach high school in Virginia (or there-abouts), but with the NCLB I need to be licensed, right? So I'm debating applying for a Master of Teaching at UVA (I had very good grades)-- but is this even feasible? I mean, having had two different unrelated majors, could I still get enrolled?

    If not, what're my options?

  • Knee injury from running?

I'm unsure whether this is serious or not, but here we are. I've been running for about three months now-- I had run before that, been on sports teams, etc. So it's not like I was unfit to run (I'm 5'11," 150 lbs). However, I noticed yesterday when stretching that my knee crackled sort of like how bubblewrap does when you twist it. It only did this once, and popped a few times afterwards when I stretched again.

It did NOT hurt. However, I was leery, as that's never happened before, and I didn't run on it.

I ran on it today, and I felt a bit of pressure on my right knee (the top of it)--but about how much I usually feel. It didn't hurt to run, but I think I might be running hard on my knee. Is this something to be worried about? Any suggestions or tips for prevention? I'm doing about 15 minutes of stretches that target my legs before I run, and I'm only running 3.5 miles each time.

I just don't want this to turn into something serious. Better safe than sorry, you know?

  • How Long Does The Pain From Kidney Infections Last?

See above. My girlfriend's had it for a few days now, and though she's upped on medicine, it still hurts her. She's concerned and may want to go to the doctor AGAIN. If you've had one before (and please don't answer unless you have, or someone else you know DIRECTLY has), about how long until the pain subsides?
