  • are rhythm beads helpful?

so i'm thinking about getting a pair for the trail horse i'm going to purchase within the next few days. i like how practical the bells are for alerting other riders/wildlife/hunters etc that you are in the area. this is especially important because i'll probably hack out alone most of the time. does anyone who owns or uses rhythm beads in ring/flat work find it helpful in cadence, concentration (for you or horse) and so on. also, i've only really seen people in western saddles use rhythm beads, would i look totally crazy with beads and my english saddle?

    thanks for any advice =]

  • horseback riding in the heat?

okay so in central maryland it regularly gets to over 100 degrees. i try my hardest to only ride in the very early or very late hours of the day to avoid peak sunlight. but sometimes (especially when my trainer is extremely busy) i can only get lessons during mid-day.i don't do well in the heat and my trainer knows this. i drink tons of poweraid and other sports drinks so stay hydrated, i wear sunscreen, and dress in light colored breathable clothing. how else can i try and stay cool during my lessons? i literally get to the point where i'm dizzy and about to faint off of my horse. this even happens if i just stick to light flatwork. so if anyone has hot-day riding tips it would be greatly appreciated.

  • hamilton gimbal chronometer circa 1942-- what is it worth?

so i was digging through a closet and i found a hamilton ( lancaster PA) gimbal chronometer (either a model 21 or 22, i'm not sure), which belonged to my grandfather. it's from 1942 and is marked "MTD. WATCH/BUREAU OF SHIPS/ U.S. NAVY/N4472-1942" in my opinion it is in good to fair condition. it is currently not running, but i would like to get it fixed. it is not in its original wooden box, but in a metal shipping container. i'm just curious as to what it is worth and about how much & where can i get it fixed? if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

  • unsure of how to price this saddle?

so i currently own a used crosby prix des nation saddle. i have switched disciplines from hunter to dressage/eventing, and frankly, all this saddle is doing is taking up space. the gullet measures 5 inches from nail head to nail head, the tree is a medium (at least i think so?) the seat is 17 1/2 inches (from nail head to center of cantle) and the flaps measure 14 inches from the bottom of the stirrup bar to the end of the flap. it has plain flaps, and no knee or thigh blocks, which makes it the perfect hunt seat/equitation saddle. it is approximately 15-20 years old, but i have only had it in my possession for the past 8 months or so. the leather is slightly cracked on the seat, and also has several water marks, but if cleaned and conditioned regularly, none of these are a problem and they don't show when you are sitting in the saddle. this saddle has wool flocked panels, and both the stitching and the tree are sound.

so here is my problem, the only crosby's i've been able to find for sale are the newer models, which doesn't help me in determining a sale price at all. of the older prix des nations that i've found (the ones that a very similar to my saddle) are all in very poor condition. so how do i know what to sell it for? also, what is your preferred method of selling saddles? do you use e-bay, craig's list or any other type of selling website?

    pictures:

any help on pricing would be appreciated.

  • trusting my trainer? (horse related)?

okay, so normally on Tuesday evenings i have a private lesson. sadly, my trainer has come down with the flu, and canceled all of her lessons. now normally, this wouldn't be a big deal for me. but, BOTH of my horses are lame right now =( i just found out like 5 minutes ago that my gelding lost a shoe, so obviously i can't ride him, and my mare's leg is swollen from getting kicked in the field. so my trainer just called and told me to ride this new horse called Secret. apparently he's a "good boy, just uneducated". i don't have a problem with a green horse, but my trainer has been known to bend the truth about some horses. for instance, (last summer) she asked me to exercise this horse named pixie. she said that pixie had been shown all the way through beginner/novice eventing and was a great horse. after pixie bolted with me 3 times in less then 30 minutes, i questions my trainer. turns out that pixie had been off the track for less then a year, and had only been under saddle for about a month. so how do i know if i can trust Secret? (and my trainer for that matter) i know my own limits when riding, and i know when i'm in over my head. so i won't push it if i can't handle this horse. i'm set to go riding in about 3 hours or so, and i'm REALLY nervous. what can i do to calm my nerves around this horse? i've been riding for over 13 years, and i don't normally get worried over stuff like this. =//

and frankly any advice would be helpful. =]

and thanks for reading all this i know it's kinda long.

  • portable tack trunk for showing?

i need a portable tack trunk to take to shows.

the trunk i currently have is large and wooden, and defiantly not super portable. i don't care if it's wood or plastic, i just need it to last. i would like it to be light weight and with wheels too. i would prefer something cheaper, but i know you get what you pay for at the same time.

    so my questions are:

what type of trunk (brands) do you own/use?

    are they easily portable?

    are they light weight?

    are they durable?

    how are they cost wise?

    are they worth it?

    any cool special features?

    and.. (most importantly)..

    where can i get one?

    thanks in advance guys. =]

  • moody mare problems? and booting problems?

i own a 5 year old warmblood mare, and she's been cranky as all get out this week. (for obvious reasons, she's coming into season)

anyways, she's okay on the ground. (she's been trying to drag me to go see the farm's stallion every time i lead her. it's gotten to the point where i'm having to use a stud chain to get a bit more control over her head) under saddle is becoming a big problem though. she has naturally sensitive sides, you only really need a small squeeze to make her go. but today, when i was riding, any small touch of my legs sent her into a HUGE kicking fit. it happened every time i asked her to trot, canter and jump. any upwards transitions came with pinned ears and squeals. every time i landed off a jump, she bucked or tossed her head. (to the point where she almost smacked me in the face with her head) she's been super anxious, like pawing every time we stopped, jigging/prancing instead of standing, etc.

so basically, i've never owned a mare before, so i don't really know how to deal with all of this. when i asked her past owner about feed through moody mare supplements, she said they had no effect on Slipper. so i guess that's sort of out of the question. is there anything i can do to make her more comfortable, or to stop the bad behavior? i mean i don't mind riding through a few kicks, but 20+ in an hour of riding is a tad bit annoying and unsettling.

oh and i have an off topic question too =]

she's also been getting a ton of brushing injuries when she's out in the field. she's normally turned out in a pair of bell boots, but would it be okay to turn her out with a pair of splint boots too? i normally use splints and bell boots when riding (if that helps any) i tried turning her out in polos with duct tape wrapped around them (like my trainer suggested) but because all of our fields are muddy (it's been raining a lot recently), the tape came undone and so did the polos. so they didn't really offer her any protection.

    thanks in advance!

  • more period questions? =//?

in January and February, my period was irregular.

    i bled from feb. 24th to 28th.

i had sex with my boyfriend on march 3, and again on the 6th. we used a condom both times.

i got my period again last night. it is a LOT darker and thicker then it normally is. there are also a lot of clots, but they aren't particularly big. it also seems like i'm not bleeding as much as i normally do. my period is normally a bright redish color, but is now more brown/black.

i've been having bad cramps for almost a week before my period. (started last thursday) so i'm wondering if i'm having miscarriage? or if i'm pregnant? i didn't think you bled at all if you were pregnant, but i'm not positive. i plan on going and getting an at home pregnancy tests after i'm done bleeding just to be safe, but i'm a little nervous. should i go and see a doctor, or am i getting myself all riled up for nothing?

    thanks in advance =]]

  • when should a saddle be reflocked?

i recently bought a used crosby saddle.

it's approximately 15 years old, and to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't ever been reflocked.

i've read some mixed reports on reflocking though. some people suggest getting it redone every year, and some people say that it only needs to be done every 25+ years.

    so which is right?

how do you tell when a saddle needs to be reflocked, and about how much would it cost to reflock one?

  • dog has chronic ear infections?

i have a 7 year old parsons terrier who suffers from chronic ear infections. i have only had him for a little over a year, but in that time he has cost more then $1,000 on his ears alone! (cost of vet bills and medication) he is constantly scratching his ears and they are ALWAYS red. i feel so bad for him, but antibiotics don't really do much. they will clear his ears for about a week or two, and then they will get just as infected again! the vet gave me this ear flush/cleaner thing to put in his ears once a week. it does decrease the redness and itchy-ness, but it doesn't fix the problem. i regularly clean out his ears with q-tips and baby oil, as the vet instructed too, but again, it doesn't do much. i always dry his ears after applying medication and cleaning, so it's not like water is sitting in his ear canal.

    so my questions are:

-is there anything else i can do, or will he always suffer from this?

-are parsons/JR terriers more prone to ear infections, or is it just my dog?

-am i doing something wrong, or is the vet giving me advice that's actually hurting my dog?

-are there any at home solutions for dog ear infections?

    thanks in advance =]]

  • home made saddle oil?

so i just purchased a used crosby saddle tonight.

its about 15 years old and is in pretty good condition.

the only problem is that the leather is stiff as all get out. this thing probably hasn't been on a horse's back in like 5+ years.

so i followed my trainers advice and used my lexol leather cleaner to clean the saddle, but i'm out of oil. she told me to use vegetable oil on it until i can get to the tack store and pick up some real oil.

the cleaner and veggie oil have worked decently. the leather doesn't feel like you can crack it anymore, but it's not as conditioned as i'd like it to be.

i was planning on using it tomorrow and i was wondering if anyone knows some home remedies or anything to make saddle oil or conditioner?

    thanks in advance =]

  • questions about my cycle?

i've had my period of the better part of 7 years and have never had a problem with it.

i normally get my period on the 1st of every month and it lasts about 5 days. i have approximately 30 days between each cycle.

in January, i got my period late. it came on the 9th, and lasted until then 13th. then, i got my period again in January, on the 30th. that cycle lasted until February 3rd. today, (the 24th) i got my period again. in January, my period(s) was about 15 days apart, and now in February, it is 20 days apart.

so my first question is: why?

this has never happened to me before and as far as i know, i'm healthy. (i eat right and get plenty of exercise)

my second question is: should i be worried?

and my third question is: should i see a doctor about this?

    thanks =]]

  • possibly adopting a horse? which one looks best for me?

i've been looking at several horses online. i am thinking of adopting/buying a horse within the nest month or so and i want to see what everyone thinks of these guys before i make any serious commitments. (of course i'm going out to 'test drive' them all)

i'm looking for a younger horse with plenty of potential. i've been riding, working with, and training horses for over 10 years. i would like a horse that already knows how to jump and has good conformation. i don't mind finishing a horse but i would like to have one ready for the spring show season.

so here are the guys i'm looking at:

    Double Exposure

  • 7 year old jack russell chatters teeth?

    he only does this sometimes.

it's not when he's cold or excited but they just clack together for about a minute or two.

is this something serious like a mini seizure? or is it normal and common? should i take him to the vet?

i've only had his for a little over a year and he's just started this in the last 3 months.

during these 'episodes' he seems normal. walking, responding, and it doesn't seem to bother him.

does anyone know anything about this and what's causing it?

considered 'broken in' for a synthetic saddle

    comes with:

used square saddle pad (royal blue with evergreen piping)

    wintec synthetic stirrup leathers

    4 1/2" peacock stirrups

stirrup pads, rubber bands, and leather keepers.
