Time is overrated. It is only useful to keep everything from happening all at once.

  • Used up my two alternate address changes per year. Can Yahoo admins can reset my counter?

I didn't know about the max of two alternate email address changes per year. I have not settled on which alt. address I want to use, and tried a couple already.

I definitely don't want the last one I created, and want to change it just one more time.

But now I cannot create an alt. addr. because I've hit the max that I was unaware of.

Can Yahoo admins reset my count so I can change it one more time???

  • Does anyone know this 70's horror movie with red eyes in a window?

For 40 years I've had a vivid image from a horror flick I saw on TV, circa 1970-1975. All I remember is one scene, but it had a lasting effect on me! It probably was the first horror movie I'd ever seen (I was ages 9-14 during this time).

Here's what I recall: a young couple buys a house (or possibly a barn). [Note: this movie is NOT The Amityville Horror; also I not think it is Spielberg's "Something Evil".] The husband is a photographer, i think. The wife puts a dutch hex sign she finds above the barn door. She starts observing supernatural things about the house, but nobody else notices.

One day the husband is developing some film of house and barn photos. He comes across one photo taken from outside the house. This is the scene I will *never* forget: in the photograph, a pair of red eyes appears in a window. He immediately realizes his wife was right and rushes out of his lab a drives home ASAP to get his wife away from the place.

At some point it is revealed the hex sign above the barn was a satanic symbol - the wife was unaware of this when she installed it.

I don't recall the ending. i just recall the chilling red-eyes-in-the-photo scene.

Despite the similarities with both Amityville and Something Evil, I do not believe this movie was either. The former came out in 1979, the movie I saw was definitely prior to 1979.

  • What does this mean in NHL rules?

In reading the rules for faceoffs on NHL.com, this phrase appears in several places:

"players enter the attacking zone beyond the outer edge of the end zone face-off circle"

Does anybody know exactly what this means?

Hmm .. OK, I think I figured it out. The "outer edge" of a faceoff circle is the point of the circle closest to the boards. Imagine a line parallel to the boards, starting from the outer edge of an endzone faceoff circle, ending at the blue line. If you enter an attacking zone between this imaginary line and the boards, you have, essentially, sneaked into the zone along the boards.

I guess the rules with this reference (there are many) are trying to prevent players from entering the attacking zone undetected at certain times (esp. stoppage of play).

    Do I have it right?

    Here's a more complete reference:

    "76.2 Face-off Locations

    ...

(iii)  when the defending team is penalized and the attacking players enter the attacking zone beyond the outer edge of the end zone face-off circle - face-off in the neutral zone"

  • Just flushed hot water heater, still a bit discolored?

Four days ago I flushed out my hot water heater because the water was very dirty. The result was a vast improvement. However it still isn't crystal clear; it has a slight dirty greenish tint. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of that last 0.1%?

Originally, I emptied the tank completely, then after refilling I ran the hot water from a bath tub and sink for 10 minutes. A day later I ran the hot from four sinks, a bath tub and a shower for 30 minutes.

  • Qs on the nature of photons?

The extent of my understanding of all things photon is this: a photon is an elementary particle, carrying quantum levels of light (& other electromagnetic radiation); it has no mass; it acts as both a wave and a particle.

Here's small sampling of my many photonic questions and misunderstandings:

    1) Since a photon is the carrier of light, then a single proton travels at the speed of light, correct?

    2) Does a single photon possess a specific frequency? (thereby that photon having a particular color)? Or, is the frequency of light determined only by multiple photons? For example, think of ocean waves ... one wave doesn't have 'frequency', but if 10 waves crash onto the shore every minute, then the frequency is 10 waves/min.

    3) Does a single photon travel as a point in one direction? Or, does it radiate like a wave? If the former, then it takes many photons to radiate light in all directions (correct?). If the latter, then a single photon radiates light in all directions (that doesn't make sense at all - I'm sure the answer is the former; I just want to make sure)

    4) When a photon is emitted by an atom, how does it accelerate from a speed of "zero" (when its energy was held by the atom) to the speed of light? Isn't there a non-zero amount of time required for it to reach c? If so, then for the duration of the acceleration, the photon has not reached the speed of light (!)

  • How to create a league excluding the top 50 players?

Over the years, I've created leagues in football, baseball and hockey. Next time I set up a new league for one of them, I'd really like to have it so the top players are completely excluded from the entire season (I and the other guys like to discover the sleepers, up-and-comings, and rookies)

For example, I'd like to create an NHL league in which nobody could draft, nor ever pick up as free agents, any of the top 30 players (Sedin, Stamkos, Ovechkin, etc. etc).

I could simply request each team to exclude these players from their draft. The other managers are trustworthy enough that could be done.

However, once the season starts then the real problem starts. Every time someone wants to pick up a free agent, the manager has to make a conscious effort to avoid picking up any of those top 30. It can be done, but would be a real pain-in-the-butt.

Another approach I thought of was to create a couple of "dummy" teams that draft the top N (in my example above, top 30) players. Then place all their players on the bench for the entire season.

This would work - sort of - except I'd have to have enough of these dummy teams so as to be able to fill up their benches w/30 players. With, say, 5 bench spots available per team, I'd have to create 6 dummy teams. And, of course, the real teams would actually be playing these dummy teams - albeit a guaranteed win - but still it isn't ideal.

I've generally used Yahoo's fantasy leagues, but if there is another free site that works as I've described, I'd use it!

    THANKS!

  • Is it OK to rinse filters to extend their useful lifetime?

When I change water in my 30g fresh H2O tank, I've also been *rinsing* the filter (unless it is due for a change).

I generally need to change the filter 2x/month (the tank is currently overcrowded, as my mollies are reproducing quicker than I can bring the fries to the pet store!).

But with a good rinse of the filter during my water changes, it looks like I can stretch the filter changes to 3 or sometimes 4 weeks (save a lot of $$$ that way!)

Am I the only one doing this? Am I being penny-wise and pound-foolish?

    THANKS!

  • Are photons forever? Do they radiate?

Suppose an atom emits a single photon. Does that photon travel in one direction (until acted upon by some other force), ie, like a particle? Or, does it radiate in all directions, like a wave?

If it radiates, then eventually won't that energy dissipate completely? (like concentric waves caused by a drop of water in an endless pool; as they expand radially they lose their strength at any given point on the circle). Eventually the energy of the photon would, essentially, disappear.

  • Scoreboard hasn't updated in 5 days?

My scoreboard on my My Yahoo! page hasn't updated, for any sport, in five days - last updated scores are from May 20. A friend sees the same problem. Is this a Yahoo! system problem?
