A number of athletes have reportedly improved their performance by participating in Blood Doping. One method is for an athlete to withdraw some of his blood weeks before a sporting event; separate the red blood cells in the sample and freeze the blood. Prior to the event, the athlete thaws the blood and then injects it back into himself. The increased hematocrit that results slightly improves the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, which theoretically improves his performance.
