For many years I wrote stories as a hobby. Finally decided I'd like to get published, and completed a sci-fi novel which is available as an audio podcast. You can check it out on www.workingthegalaxy.com My travels have taken me to South America, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Hong Kong, China, and various places in the USA. I am Orthodox Christian (OCA) convert. I enjoy cooking (and eating), drawing, painting, crafts, and writing. Cheers - J

  • how long should a pocast episode be?

If you listen to audio episodes of a novel, how long do you want each episode to be?

Specifically, this is a science fiction book of about 160,000 words which is serious, character driven drama.

Also, where would you be when you listen?

  • If you want to listen to science fiction podcasts, how will you look for some?

I would like to promote my podcast, but I'm not sure how to reach people who may be interested.

  • Do you go to fan conventions?

For science fiction, fantasy, or steam punk? If so, what do you enjoy most about it? and how far would you travel to get to one?

  • What kind of microphone is good for recording a podcast on computer?

I would really like to hear from someone who has actual experience trying different microphones. Someone has recommended that I use a stand-alone recorder--Samson's Zoom H2--and then download from the recorder into my computer, but that's a bit more expensive than just a microphone.

  • When shoping for a new book does the name of the author influence your choice?

I mean, if you aren't familiar with an author, do you look at the name and find some names are more appealing than others? Do you try to guess the ethnicity or nationality of the author while considering whether to read the book? Do you expect younger or older authors are better for you?

Is the cover art more important than the name of the author?

  • survey about The Great Gatsby?

I am posting this here instead of the survey section because it is more relevant to B&A.

This is not a 'homework' question. I had to read The Great Gatsby in college English class, and I'm always seeing 'homework' questions about it, so I guess everybody gets the book as an assignment at some point in their education. Personally, I don't share my former teacher's opinion about how great the book is.

If you have read The Great Gatsby, I would like to know the following:

    1. Do you feel this is great literature?

    2. How old are you?

    3. Are you male or female?

    4. Did you read it as a school requirement?

    5. How would you rate your school's English classes.

  • Will an external microphone improve audio recording on my laptop?

I want to make voice recordings for podcast. My computer is a Dell Inspiron running Windows7. I think I can use a mic that has a USB connector.

  • Does yahoo have a help desk with real people?

My mail attachments won't open. Instead, when I try to open them I get asked for my password again, which only takes me back to my email page. Then when I try to open the attachment again, I get asked for my password again. Going in circles. I tried to find a way to contact Yahoo and discovered that they completely hide from users. You can find tips on common problems, but there is no one to communicate with unless you want to do the online chat thing.

So, is there an email address for Yahoo!Help that actually goes to a living person who gives an intellegent response?

  • what to do on vacation in Maui?

Going for the first time. Any tips on fun things to do, or bad things to avoid will be appreciated. We will be in a hotel on the west side of the island...can't remember the name of the hotel.

Looking for tips from people who have been there.

  • living trusts and wills--do it yourself, or get a lawyer?

I need to set things up before I'm gone so that my survivors will not pay too much taxes or have problems.

I'd like to hear about any pitfalls in the process, especially from people who've tried the "do it yourself" software, and if there've been problems with having a lawyer do it. I don't want to screw this up.

  • If the government announced that extraterrestrial aliens will be arriving on Earth?

And this all that you hear about it, what will your reaction be? How would you feel about it.

You are not told any other specifics--just that aliens are on the way.

  • what kind of thermostat do I need?

I've got a very old gas heater (1942) in my house that has two wires coming out of it to the thermostat. I think the wires go to a thermocouple because there's only about 0.4 Vdc on them. There are no other wires going to the heater. The heater turns on (lights) when the wires are shorted together.

I bought a Honeywell thermostat that is supposed to work with a two-wire system, but it doesn't work. The Honeywell website says that it's made for a "24V system", but I don't think that's what I have.

The old thermostat was thrown away when the house was remodeled and the local hardware stores don't know what I need.

    Any ideas?

  • Do you belong to a writer's group?

How many people are in the group?

Does the group have a specific focus, such as fiction, non-fiction, essays, poems, etc.?

Are you getting some benefit from your participation?

Is it highly structured, or more casual?

I'm asking because I belong to a group and have attended meetings of other groups that function quite differently. My group could use some improvement in how we function, but I'm not sure what changes will be best.

  • How are lesbians seen from a Jewish culture point of view, particularly Jewish lesbians?

I asked this in the religion section and only got one answer. I'll ask it again here:

I understand that conservative Judaism does not approve of male homosexuality, but how does it view female homosexuality?

And how do less conservative Jews feel about this, in general. I understand that everyone will have their own opinion and not all Jews will see this the same way.

I would especially like to hear from those Jews who have dealt with this issue in their own lives.

  • After the Salem witch trials, how did people in New England look back and see it?

I'm wondering about the period maybe ten or twenty years after the trials.

I've read that Nathanial Hawthorne thought it was shameful, but I don't know if most others shared his view.
