I have a BA major in Religious studies and minor in psychology. I have also studied Classical History. I am interested in all religions but I don't believe in god, at least none of the gods I have encountered so far. Faith is a formidable trait and so I spend most of my time in R/S to try to understand where it comes from.

  • Christians.. seriously please tell me..?

Please tell me seriously how you can believe in a god that creates imperfect beings (human are not perfect), then gives them a bunch of rules to follow (some of which goes against our nature such as lust), then lets loose his brightest angel Lucifer/Satan to tempt them into failing, then will only accept the suffering and death of his son as offering for redemption, and then still, threatens to send you to burn in hell for eternity if you fail his test??

I don't intend for this question to be derisive, but rather I would like you to think about it and please tell me how and why this is plausible and acceptable to you. 10 points for a convincing honest answer.

  • A question regarding the KJV bible..?

When I was in university, studying for my degree in Religious and Classical studies, my professors (mostly Episcopalians) recommended that we (students) get a Catholic Bible for our religion courses because they said that it was the closest to the hebrew bible and that the KJV had removed many of the bible’s books that had been used by Christians for centuries.

My question is for Christians who read and believe ONLY the King James’ version of the bible. Do you believe that King James was a prophet of God? Do you feel that only he knew what the true word of God is? I see many Christians condemning the Mormons because they have a different version of the bible and because they revere a man who had a vision, well I feel that Christians who only believe in the KJV are doing exactly the same thing are you not? King James altered the original bible and removed many of the books that did not fit his beliefs, did he have a vision?

  • What is your interpretation of this passage from the bible?

    Genesis 6:1-4

When men began to multiply on earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of heaven* saw how beautiful they daughters of man were, and so they took for their wives as many of them as they chose…. At that time the Nephilim appeared on earth after the sons of heaven had intercourse with the daughters of man, who bore them sons. They were the heroes old, the men of renown.

    * some translations say « the sons of god » others say « the sons of the gods »

Who were the sons of heaven? Were they angels? The Nephilim are the children and descendants of these angelic-human copulations. I know that Christians believe that angels can impregnate humans – an angel got Mary pregnant – so what does this mean? This passage comes right before the flood narrative and the ancient Ethiopian holy « Book of Enoch » says that Noah was a Nephilim. If we are all descendants of Noah, then are we part angelic? Who are the heroes of old? Zeus perhaps or the other pagan gods?

I’ve spent the last 30 years looking for an answer to this question and I’m interested in knowing what others think Christians and Jews alike. Tell me what you think.

  • For theists, particularly Christians, is your God perfect?

I hear it all the time, God is perfect, without fault, all powerful and loving and kind, yet he would send a kind and just person to eternal damnation, simply because that person does not believe in him? All Christian religions, claim that God is the creator and that we are all his children, yet he would condemn his children for having doubts. As a human mother I would give my life for my child and if my child moved far away from my house and did things that I did not approve of, I would continue to love him and try to help him out no matter what, so am I better than your god? If I died tomorrow and came face to face with god and said, "Oh you do exist", would he send me to hell even though I live a good and moral life?

  • Why are there so many atheists in the Religion & spirituality section?

I call myself an atheist because I do not believe in any "personified" god (eg. a supreme being with human characteristics) but I do feel that there is more to life than what I see and so I keep searching but the more I study religion (I actually have a BA in religious studies) the more convinced I am that it is all myths and I can't believe that intelligent and educated people can believe that the bible is fact. I don't consider myself an agnostic because I don't believe in a supreme being, afterlife? maybe! god or goddess? no. So to all the other atheists in this section, have you found what you are looking for? or are you here just to antagonize the bible thumpers?
