Vote for *anyone's* answers, not just mine, in Yahoo!Answers Community Service, so questions don't stay there forever. I've worked with nonprofit orgs/NGOs for more than 20 years. I specialize in public/press relations, marketing, support for volunteers, online volunteering, and international aid & development. • "Haiti doesn't need your hand-me-downs" reactions?

Haiti Doesn't Need Your Old T-Shirt

The West can (and should) stop dumping its hand-me-downs on the developing world.

How do you feel about this article and its sentiments? Will it change how you think about helping Haiti and other poor countries? Please read the article before responding.

  • Has the Internet helped you re: volunteering?

How has email, the web in general, FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, or any other Internet tool helped you connect with a volunteering opportunity (to find a volunteering gig, to learn more about volunteering somewhere, to express interest in volunteering, etc.) and/or how have any of these tools helped you *while* you were volunteering?

  • What's the biggest obstacle to you volunteering?

For people who *want* to volunteer, but who haven't yet volunteered, and...

For people who *want* to volunteer, but who are not currently volunteering or aren't doing as much as they would like, and....

For people who used to volunteer, but now no longer do:

What is the biggest obstacle to you volunteering? Is it lack of time? Lack of transportation? Your age (you are told you are too young by organizations you want to help? Lack of knowledge about where to volunteer or what your options are? Not sure how to decide what to do? Uninterested in what is offered? A previous experience that left you disillusioned about volunteering? Another reason?

Also, please give your age (or a general idea: under 18, in your 20s, etc.).

I'm asking because I'm very curious about various points of view when it comes to volunteering.

  • Using your online profiles to promote volunteering & causes - do you? if not, why not?

You have an online profile here on YahooAnswers. You have on Yahoo, in general, as well. You probably have profiles on MySpace, FaceBook, LinkedIn, and various other online social networking sites too.

Do you use these profiles to link to or talk about nonprofit organizations you volunteer for, or causes that you care about?

Do you use these profiles to encourage people to support particular nonprofits or causes?

If not, why not? If yes, what kind of responses do you get to your profile as a result? (if any)

  • Your opinion: web sites promoting volunteering gigs (USA)?

Whether you have lots of experience using different web sites to search for volunteering gigs/tasks/opportunities, or would be looking at these web sites for the first time per this question, here's a question:

What is your opinion of the following web sites promoting volunteering opportunities for multiple organizations, mostly in the USA? What do you like about them, what do you not? Which do you use/would you use regularly?

    VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org)/

    IdeaList (http://www.idealist.org)/

    Change.org (http://www.change.org)/

    Network for Good (http://www.networkforgood.org/)

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet (http://servenet.org/)

Your local edition of CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com)/

Other sites listing volunteering opportunities for multiple organizations in the USA?

  • Dec. 5 is International Volunteer Day -- Did you know?

International Volunteer Day was designated by the United Nations and celebrates volunteers anywhere in the world, engaged in activities they feel passionate about. The World Volunteer Web is seeking stories, photos and videos relating to your volunteering. Please visit the site for information on how to share your stories, photos and videos of volunteers (or your own self in actin as a volunteer!), as well as resources you can use to organize your own IVD event. Information is also available in Spanish and French. The World Volunteer Web is an initiative of the United Nations Volunteers programme.

    http://www.worldvolunteerweb.org/

Are you going to celebrate IVD?

Are you going to submit information about your volunteering?
