  • Is this legal- and if so, is it done in other workplaces?

I accepted my job, it was with the understanding that it was hrly, 40hr/wk with sick time and vacation. This year the workplace randomly has been closing and I'm told to use my sick or vacation time to be paid on those days. I do have a choice to not be paid on those days. Is this ok or a breach of original contract? I'm afraid that if I use sick time when not sick, I can't take off when actually sick. ok?

  • dance outfit that twirls?

My 3 year old daughter just started a dance class- it's just a little kid class that does creative movement, some ballet and tap. I bought her a leotard with an attached tutu online, and when it came, she explained that she doesn't like the tutu because it doesn't "twirl." She says that she wants one that starts down and goes up when you spin (instead of a tutu that starts up and stays up.

What is the name of this kind of skirt, or a leotard that comes with one of these attached to it?

Apparently, this is the thing that she is most interested in about dance class, and I don't know where to get one or even how to search for one.

  • phlebotomy question- patient was bleeding like crazy?

    Hi.

I just started working as a lab tech, and one thing that I'm sometimes called to do is blood draws. Usually they're simple, but yesterday there was a problem and I am curious if someone can explain to me what could have happened.

Yesterday there was a patient in the Emergency room. I used a butterfly and drew from the AC vein. As usual, I asked if she was on any blood thinners. She said that she wasn't. When I was done drawing blood, I took the tourniquet off as usual, removed the butterfly, and applied gauze with some pressure. The gauze immediately was saturated with blood, and blood was running down her arm. I got more gauze, and held pressure but she was still bleeding like crazy, to the point that blood was dripping onto her hospital sheet. I just couldn't get the blood to stop. Eventually, it did and I wrapped her with coban and cleaned her arm. I have no idea why this happened and am wondering if it was my fault- something I did wrong, or if she possibly has a medical condition that caused that.

The test that was ordered was a D Dimer test. Her results were extremely high. Her CBC was pretty normal- I was curious if maybe her platelets were low, but they weren't.

Can someone explain to me whether a high D Dimer could have anything to do with this bleeding, and also what I was supposed to do in this situation. As a newish tech, this has never happened and it was kind of scary.

  • 3 year old- red chapped face?

My almost 3 year old daughter has red cheeks and a red chin. It looks like it's chapped. It's recently turned cold out, and I'm thinking it's from the heating in the house or the wind outside. We tried putting baby lotion on her cheeks, but she says it stings.

What would you recommend? They're not just temporarily red from going outside. They look chapped and painful.

  • employment history- how to obtain (US) for resume?

    Hi.

I've been looking for a job, and many sites where I'm applying have online applications where you have to put your employment dates from the past 10 years. For the past 5 years, my life has been stable (in the same place), but after high school I had a very scattered life--I was homeless for some time on and off, had multiple short term jobs - some at the same time, went to many different colleges...before being diagnosed with a severe mental illness which led to getting disability, and not working.

I have been getting treatment, and the medications have been working- to the point that I was able to finish college, have a family... I am healthy enough to have a job, but don't know how to write in the dates of previous employment. I try to remember employment dates, but the whole period of time when I was untreated, I was living in a psychotic haze. I've been guesstimating dates, but am afraid that companies with employment background checks will think I'm lying. I also am not sure what to put down for places of residence for the periods of transience/homelessness.

Where does one find out their employment history in the US? How do I look it up?

  • job offered, the rescinded. Why?

I applied for a job, went to an interview, and the interview went well. I know that the interview went well because the guy who interviewed me said that he would talk to HR about the details of the job, and then follow up with me with a job proposal. He also asked me to sign a form agreeing to a background check. He said that they conduct very thorough background checks that take about 2 weeks.

A few days later, the guy who interviewed me called. He said that he spoke with HR and had an offer. He told me what my salary would be, what time I would come in, how many vacation days I would get, what kinds of health plans I'd have...He told me that after the first 90 days of the job, my performance would be reviewed and based on that, my salary could change (he gave numbers). He asked if I wanted the job, and I said yes. He told me that I would start right after the background check came back, as long as it was ok.

I have no criminal history, and have never even gotten a parking/speeding ticket. My credit should be fine (I don't owe anyone anything, and pay bills on time). I do have some medical secrets, (I have received SSI disability) but that wouldn't come up on a background check, would it?

2 weeks passed, and I emailed the person who gave the offer asking if the background check was complete. He told me that it was, and the owner of the company wanted to take me to dinner.

It turned out to be a 4 hour dinner interview, in which the boss asked very inappropriate questions. He asked about my age (30), and whether I was an Obama supporter. He didn't ask me any questions about my qualifications for the job (a technical job). Instead, he asked what kinds of food I cooked and what my feelings were about the organic movement, and the relative IQ's of Obama vs GW Bush. He also went on some political rants.

I thought I did well during the interview, despite finding it odd. On Saturday I got a letter saying that they're sorry but can't offer me a job at this time...

Is it inappropriate for me to write a letter asking what I did wrong, to make them rescind the initial offer? I would like to know whether there is something negative in the background check, or whether I somehow screwed up the dinner interview with the boss. I also would like to know if it was legal for the boss to try to fish for political views, when you are not allowed to discriminate based on politics.

  • what will people be wearing to this funeral?

Tomorrow is a college classmate's funeral. I have not been to funerals before, and don't want to wear anything that would make me 'stick out'. What do you think the people will be wearing? Here is a bit of background abt where they live etc.

The man was 28 yo. Family lives in rural midwest. He was a soldier in Iraq/Afghanistan (but was shot and killed in the US). The family is Christian, from a town of like 900 people. He did things like motorcycle, hunt, fish...

This culture is kind of foreign to me, and I'm not sure what people will be wearing- for all I know, they could wear formal dress or jeans and hiking boots...

Are black corduroy jeans ok? what kind of shirt? Are any colors tabboo? Sneakers ok? I am a 29yo female (don't have a black dress or much of anything formal...I mostly wear scrubs on weekdays, jeans on wkends)

  • what to wear to this funeral?

A friend from college was killed and his funeral is tomorrow morning. I don't know what people wear to funerals- what is appropriate and what is inappropriate. My clothing consists mostly of jeans for play and scrubs for work. I have nice jeans and not nice jeans. My shoes are hiking boots or sneakers. Is it rude to show up in jeans to a funeral? Should I shop first thing in the morning for something presentable? He was a great guy and I want to be there, but dont want to look offensive

Also, it will be 30 degrees outside.

    Suggestions?

Edit to add: The funeral will be in a rural midwest town. The man was a veteran from Iraq and Afghanistan (but was killed in the US). His family is pretty old school "country" (I haven't met them, but know that they are into hunting, have a huge american flag in front of their home...) --Im adding this thinking that it might help you figure out what is appropriate dress for this situation. This culture is kind of foreign to me, so any help with what people typically would wear to this kind of funeral would be appreciated.

    d- sulfhemoglobin

    e- all of the above

Which do you think is the right answer

  • scrubs for a small person?

I have clinical rotations in a hospital lab soon. I'm 5"5, weigh 105lb, and wear a size 0-2. I went to walmart, and their XS pants are HUGE. The shirts are a bit baggy, but wearable.

Do any of you know what scrub brands run small (size 0-2) or come in XXS?

  • would you be insulted if your husband said this to you?

On memorial weekend I was wearing a short, kind of tight dress, which is sort of unusual for me- I'm generally a shorts and t shirt person. I thought it was something festive and maybe sexy to do for him on a long holiday weekend, and made me feel festive.

We were walking to the park to play frisbee with our dog and toddler, and he started laughing at my fashion sense. Then he told me that the dress accentuated the fact that I am too skinny and have no butt. Then he said - "You know what you look like? You look exactly like a cartoon worm."

Then he kept on going on about my likeness to a worm.

I've always been naturally skinny and since breastfeeding our baby, have struggled to keep on weight.

Is it right for me to feel berated and insulted that he could attack my body shape out of the blue liek that or am I just being hypersensitive?

  • looking for an in home daycare?

I am looking for an in home daycare for my 17 month old. We are visiting one tomorrow, and the woman who runs it speaks English as a second language, and I'm not sure what her level of fluency is. If she is warm and nurturing, and the kids who go there seem well taken care of, do you think it matters if her English isn't grammatical? I've just read about how the amount of words heard in baby/toddlerhood impacts verbal skills for the rest of life..

  • skateboarding questions- where to start?

I'm a 28 year old woman and have never been on a skateboard before. I'm thinking of learning just basics- like- how to skateboard around the neighborhood sidewalks.

What are the downsides to getting a super cheap skateboard from a place like Target? Is it better to learn on a 'good' skateboard (whatever that means) or does it not matter if I don't care about tricks?

  • should I rinse pre washed quinoa even though it's prewashed?

Tonight I'm making quinoa for the first time, and read that quinoa can be bitter if it's not rinsed before cooking. The box I have says pre washed, and doesn't instruct to rinse or soak it before cooking. I'm wondering if anyone here on yahoo answers has experience cooking quinoa and can tell me if it tastes better after washing/soaking, even if it's already pre washed.

Please don't just google and tell me what google has to say. I only want to hear advice from you if you actually cook quinoa.

  • What's a good first woodworking project for a complete beginner?

I did not have exposure to tools growing up (family was not into handy stuff at all), and went to an all girl's school where they did not give shop. I just signed up for a woodwoking class for fun at night and am feeling like I'll be the only one there who has no experience. So I want to learn a bit about woodworking and the tools involved before going, so I don't feel like a complete idiot there.

Do you recommend any beginner books/projects that could help me familiarize myself with woodworking?

What are some good first project ideas?

  • best cookbook for learning to cook?

I would like to learn to cook- not just read and follow recipes- and am not sure what book/s to buy.

I prefer spicy dishes and strong flavors in general, enjoy veggies (but also enjoy meat and fish) and am not a big fan of foods with thick heavy white sauces or gravies...dislike patries and biscuits too.

One book that keeps popping up in searches for basic how to cook cookbooks is Mark Bittman's how to cook everything. One thing I'm wondering is whether the stuff in the book is bland, and what cuisine it typically focuses on.

Any suggestions for a book that helps teach how to cook, but doesn't just teach about bland stuff would be wonderful!

    Thanks
