  • Second job interview suddenly cancelled?

My best friend applied to her dream job even though experience was against her (new graduate). Despite this she made it through a phone interview and then completed a Skype interview. On Friday they said they wanted her to come in for a face to face interview and she was thrilled all weekend.

Today she got an email asking which of two times worked best for her ... But then just 15 minutes later they email back saying the second interview is no longer necessary and she'll hear back on their decision. How is someone supposed to interpret this? She's devastated and wanted to ask if this has happened to anyone before. It feels cruel if they decided she wasn't fit for the role after leading her on this far.

  • Can i use a straight talk Sim in a Verizon phone?

I'm confused by this. Straight talk tells me my phone is compatible and that i only need to buy a Sim card from then. Their Sims are labeled at&t or t mobile compatible only ... What if my phone is from Verizon? Will it not work?

I'm amazed their website doesn't address this question.

  • Birth control placebo without a period?

I am not sexually active. This is my first month on birth control and my first day on the placebo. My question is what happens if I get no period? Do I start again with the pills anyway or do I wait until I have my period? Also, if I get my period on the 7th day of placebo (for example), do I wait until my period is over to start the pill again? Thanks!

  • How do I go back to the original eBay seller form?

I haven't sold on eBay for a while and when I click on sell I'm taken to a Beta "List your Item" form. This form is WAY TOO simple! There is no option I can find to even add HTML to my item description. Am I missing something?

  • Yahoo Profile is lame?

I go to Profile (previously Pulse which was more useful) and it's just a boring page with no links to view my account activity or settings. Are there actually people who care about creating a personal profile on Yahoo?

Yahoo needs to get real and stop wasting their time with these features.

  • Is concatenating simple words as good a password as random letters?

I saw somewhere that a password such as this:

    'HouseBananaLawnBoat'

is as effective a password (if not more so) as a string of random letters such as:

    'UywoiIoowekJjkLLoOSSq'

The benefit of the first of course is that it's easy to remember. Do you think this is true?

  • My DTS output plays but includes static?

I have an old Kenwood 6.1 receiver that I used to have hooked up all nice and fancy. It plays back Dolby Digital of course and also DTS. I used to listen to DTS tracks all of the time.

I have hooked it up again but to a different DVD player this time, and also I don't have the rear speakers connected, only the front left, right, center and subwoofer. In my DVD player settings I have chosen Yes to output DTS tracks.

When I playback a DTS audio track I can hear it ok like I expect but there is also a constant static humming sound that won't go away. It does not happen with dolby digital trakcs. Any idea of what may be causing this? I know it's all hooked up correctly.

  • My friend is using drugs and is very depressed?

A close friend of mine is severely depressed and alone, I think I'm the only friend she has left and she hasn't been talking to her family (she won't tell me why). She's even talked of suicide. She's mostly depressed because she's alone and feels abandoned but I also believe she pushes people away.

She's currently very far away (2000 miles) and we can only communicate by phone which makes things hard.

I've known for a while that she uses marijuana but she also has been using at least one other drug but she refuses to tell me what it is. She gets very angry when I try to talk about it. She says there's nothing I can do and she doesn't care that it's not good for her. Whatever the drug is I believe she snorts it and I know she feels happier instantly after taking it. I was talking to her tonight and she was stoned or high or whatever you want to call it.

I feel so helpless and I worry for her, I feel like I have a front row seat to her self destruction. We're both in our twenties and out of school so the usual guidance counselor talk is out of the question. Is there any advice at all that I can use to try to help my friend? What drug is she most likely taking given what I described?

  • Strange entries in Apache access log?

I'm getting strange entries such as this in my Apache access log running on Ubuntu:

    x.x.x.x - - [31/Oct/2011:23:05:38 -0700] "\xd6\xc5\x9dIQL\xb0\xef\xdc [...] be\xd1wa}\xb2" 200 789

What concerns me is that my server is returning the 200 OK code for many of these. They all come from random IP addresses and multiple times a day. This is in addition to countless proxy attempts but those all return 403 or 404 codes as they should.

Some searching led me to believe this is an attempt to exploit Microsoft's IIS server but why is my Apache returning 200? Any ideas or have you seen this before? Thanks!

  • Question for anyone who is familiar with iPage hosting?

I've been tasked with recommending a host for a client and they showed interest in iPage.com I've never had an account with them before and this feature caught my attention:

"Automate Your Site Backup for $12.95/year

Protect your site with this automated daily backup. Easily restore lost and damaged files directly to your account."

This seems gimmicky to me. They make it sound like unless you pay this fee they won't backup any of your data on their servers, but this sounds ridiculous to me for a hosting company. Does anyone know what this actually means?

If you took a baby who was born 5,000 years ago and raised him in 21st century America, would there anything about him that would be distinctive? Or would he appear as no different than any child born today?
