  • Help with couples and moments?

I need help with a vector mechanics (statics) problem..?

We just started force couples, moments about a force couple, etc. This has been my death..

    Here's the question:

Two parallel 60 N forces are applied to a lever as shown. Determine the moment of the couple formed by the two forces (a) by resolving each force into horizontal and vertical components and adding the moments of the two resulting couples, (b) by using the perpendicular distance between the two forces, (c) by summing the moments of the two forces about point A.

The figure can be found here: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~dcressma/Pic

Please.. all I need is something to guide me in the right direction.. any help is greatly appreciated.

PS.. the answer comes out to 12.39 Nm in a clockwise direction

  • What's the name of this Wolverine one-shot?

I read a Wolverine one-shot years ago and I'd like to read it again. Unfortunately i forgot its name. It's about a girl Wolverine meets in a diner who asks to borrow a book he was reading. The next day she gets shot. Wolverine finds she left him a letter in the book she borrowed. It turns out she was a sex-slave that escaped the guy raping her and a lot of other girls. Wolverine finds this guy, kills him and frees all the remaining sex-slaves. there is also a female cop that fits in the story somehow but I can't remember how.

If someone could get me the name I would appreciate it. Also, if its name is something general (like 'Logan', which i suspect it is) i would appreciate any extra info that would help me find it (like year it came out or if it is part of a paperback collection or something). Thanks.

  • Israel will ban the term "Al-Nakbah"...?

"Israel will remove from school textbooks an Arabic term that describes its creation in 1948 as a "catastrophe", the Education Ministry said on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said when he was opposition leader two years ago the word "nakba" in Israeli Arab schools was tantamount to spreading propaganda against Israel."

    http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1102099.html

What do you think, is this being done because it actually is "propaganda", or is Israel trying to cover up its appalling history?

  • Were the Palestinians wrong to reject the 1948 Partition Plan?

The Palestinians constituted 2/3 of the population and they operated 93% of the land. The Jewish minority decided that the country should be cut in half, with them getting 56 %, even though they only owned 7% when the Plan was announced. Were the Palestinians just greedy and selfish for not agreeing to this plan?

  • Atheists, do you celebrate Christmas...?

and other religious festivals, like Easter? I'm just curious to know, because these holidays are like cultural practices to some, they don't even identify with the religious significance.

  • Atheists, do you have faith in science?

I mean, if you haven't actually performed the scientific experiments and done the observations yourselves, you're basically just believing what you're told. Be honest, haven't scientists been wrong before? You don't actually know, you're trusting the scientist to be right, which is the same thing Christians do with their priests. Aren't you also guilty of faith like religious people?

  • Atheists, are you moral relativists, or do you believe in absolute morals?

If you believe that morals are absolute, who gets to determine which actions are moral and which are not? No individual can claim to be able to determine everything that is moral and immoral, especially seeing as we get more moral as we get older. How do you determine it?

  • Does the IDF use human shields?

"Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday criticized an Israeli human rights organization for publishing an Israel Defense Forces soldier's testimony that troops used Palestinians as human shields during Operation Cast Lead last January, despite a 2005 High Court ruling outlawing the practice."

    http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1100300.html

The Israeli organization in question is called Breaking the Silence, who published the testimony of about 30 Israeli soldiers, who revealing the use of "accepted practices," the destruction of hundreds of houses and mosques for no military purpose, the firing of phosphorous gas in the direction of populated areas, the killing of innocent victims with small arms, the destruction of private property, etc.

    http://www.shovrimshtika.org/oferet/news_item_e.as...

One of the soldiers said," the immoral way the war was carried out was due to the systems in place and not the individual soldier." Is the IDF the most moral army in the world?

  • How do you defend this kind of behaviour?

"As part of an Israeli scheme to scare away the Palestinians from their properties, a number of arsonist settlers have set alight more Palestinian farms in the West Bank.

The land belonged to farmers from the Saffa village in the vicinity of al-Khalil (Hebron). The damaged 37 acres contained olive trees and grape vines.

The settlers came from the nearby Beit Ein settlement, farmers said.

Mohamed Awwad, who is with the Palestinian Solidarity campaign, told reporters that the Israeli military prevented fire fighters from reaching the site."

Do they still need more land, are the settlements Israel building not enough for them? And if you don't "trust my sources", then don't answer. I don't care for your hypocrisy.

  • Atheists, do you think you are better than those who follow a religion?

If so, does this sense of superiority qualify you to mock and insult others' religious beliefs?

  • What made them change their minds?

"The US has reportedly given a 'green light' to Israel to continue some construction in West Bank settlements, in contrast to its public call for a freeze on its work.

According to the Israeli daily Ma'ariv, Washington has okayed the construction of 2,500 settlement homes in the occupied territories."

    http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=100140%C2%A7i...

Another thing, why does the US feel the need to approve or disallow everything Israel does?

  • Women stabbed to death in Germany...?

"A pregnant Muslim mother was savagely murdered in a Dresden courtroom, Germany. The murderer is the same attacker who was in court appealing the €780 fine for his insult to the victim's Islamic headscarf.

Marwa Al-Sherbini, a 32-year-old Egyptian based in Germany, was stabbed several deadly times under the court ceiling and with the presence of the German police."

  • How long has Masjid Al-Aqsa been around?

I don't mean the current building (which, btw, is not the one with the golden dome), but the place itself. I heard somewhere it has been around since Prophet Abraham (A.S). Is this true?

  • Why doesn't America invade North Korea......?

for possessing nuclear weapons and threatening to use them? Isn't that the reason they invaded Iraq, and are threatening to invade Iran? I don't see the same action towards N Korea, who have actually been proven to have nuclear weapons, unlike the other two.

  • Does Islam need progress?

You always hear about so called Muslims who claim that Islam needs to change to suit the 21st century. Usually, these inferior kind of Muslims just crave Western acceptance and will do whatever it takes to get it. But, do Muslims really need to accept homosexuality, should Muslim countries become secular, and should we throw away the fundamentals of our religion just so we can be viewed as "modern"? They claim Islam is intolerant, and yet they are intolerant of our beliefs.

  • What do you think of Muslim "feminists" like...?

Asma Nomani and Irshad Manji? They believe, among other things, that Muslim women should be allowed to marry outside of their faith, and even other women.

Do these people have a right to change Islam based on what they believe is "modern development" of religion?

  • About "Angels & Demons"?

Was anyone else disappointed by the movie? They changed so many things, and omitted some important facts. I understand they had to squeeze the entire book into a two hour film, but I feel like they did not do the story justice. What do you think?

  • Why is America silent about this?

"Nearly a day after the detention of former US lawmaker Cynthia McKinney by Israeli forces, Washington has yet to make a reaction.

Israeli Navy detained former US congresswoman and Nobel Prize laureate Cynthia McKinney and twenty other human rights activists on board a relief boat outside Israel's territorial waters on Tuesday as they were heading to Gaza on a humanitarian mission.

Tel Aviv claims the boat was trying to break Israel's two-year siege on Gaza."

    http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=99532%C2%A7io...

Why doesn't the US care about it's citizens? Or is she a criminal for trying to break the siege on Gaza?
