  • Is Rhino Grip self adhesive carpet seam tape any good?

I am carpeting a room and will have a small 5' seam a few feet in front of a closet door. I have seen self adhesive seam tape at hardware store that supposedly replaces a glue strip and using a hot seam iron. I don't mind the old fashioned way, but if this peel back and self adhesive tape is good i will just use that since i only have the one small seam to do. Save about $10-15 since I would have to rent the iron. Anyone have used it on carpet seams? Thanks.

  • Do i need a moisture barrier between brick and batt insulation?

I am renovating a room in my brick veneer house with stud framed walls. I have torn down the old walls so now all that is left is the studs and brick. I am going to be adding batt insulation with the vapor barrier/paper face in towards the room. Do I also need some type of moisture barrier between the brick and insulation, such as felt or similar? Something that is not a vapor barrier but will retard some moisture/wind that seeps through the brick?

  • Can you use a Windows Phone 7 device without phone service?

I would like to use a Windows Phone 7 device, but not activate phone service and only use it with wifi. Will i be able to use all the Zune capabilities and also access the apps Marketplace via wifi? Does anyone know what is and is not available if I don't activate the phone? So basically it'd be like an Ipod Touch, except Windows Phone.

  • How to clean outdoor wooden playset?

I've acquired a used outdoor wooden playset/swingset that is about 7 years old. I believe it is cedar wood - a Rainbow system, if that means anything. Anyway, I want to restore it to its glory days as it is quite weathered in some areas. Some boards have rot and I intend to just replace, but the majority of it is in fair condition. My question is how to I clean and then maintain it? Will a low pressure wash harm it or should I just use the garden hose? Any special chemical or soap I should use to clean it? Any other tips or ideas and things to look for would be great. thanks

  • When to use Roundup in the Spring?

I have a large area of lawn that is more than 50% weeds and am going to kill it all off and reseed. I couldn't get to it in the fall so now want to get it done. I want to get the seed down as early as I can to give it time to grow before the summer, so was wondering how early in the spring will Roundup kill all the weeds and grass? It is now mid-March and the average highs are mid-50s and lows in the upper to mid-30s (Kentucky). I don't want to put it down yet if won't kill anything yet. Thanks.

  • Start a new lawn - use a tiller and roundup?

I bought a house a little over a year and it seems like the backyard has been neglected for many years. There is essentially no grass and is completely weeds and vines - not very inviting to say the least. So we want to start a new lawn from seed. The yard is also quite bumpy and has low spots. I was planning on just killing everything with roundup but now to help level all the soil out and soften it up from compaction, I'm thinking about tilling the whole yard. My question is would I still have to use an herbicide/roundup before or after I till the soil? Otherwise I would just till, rake, seed, and use a starter fertilizer or peat moss. FYI, the seed i've chosen is a tall fescue (crossfire ii) for northern Kentucky. Thanks for any advice and tips.

  • How can I tap into in-slab HVAC duct work or other options?

I have a house built in the 50's and has an attached one car garage. I would like to finish out the garage space into living space, but not sure what to do about ventilation. The house has HVAC ductwork in the slab, and the furnace/air handler is a downward blowing machine. Is it possible to run a new line off of the blower out into the garage? It would have to go through the attic. The easiest way would obviously be a wall/window type A/C and point source heat, but would really prefer tapping into the HVAC system. Thanks for ideas and answers.

  • Can cold temperatures affect how pipes drain?

It doesn't really make sense to me, unless there's grease or something that hardens and then clogs easily when its cold.

Anyway, I've got a small house so don't have too much drain pipe in the house. The sink in the bathroom last winter and the kitchen sink last winter both quit draining or drain very slowly. Plumbers snaked the drain last year and it was fine until about a month ago when the bathroom sink started getting slow again. Now its really cold and only the bath sink isn't draining really at all it seems. I've done the vinegar trick in the drains without any improvement. So does the cold have any affect or is it just coincidence?

  • How much will a new roof cost?

I have a small home with an addition. The main part of the house is 1200 sf and is a straight normal roof, with a small gable above the door. The is a 350sf addition on the back of the house, but the roof for this section requires more of a flat-roof type product. Right now it looks like long rolled shingle-type product. We'll probably be in the house another 5-10 years max, so don't necessarily need 25,30-yr roof. Any ballpark numbers I should expect?

    I'm in Louisville, KY.

  • Excel conditional formatting - cell color?

Is there a way to get Excel's conditional formatting to do this? I want one cell to format one color (say yellow) only if another cell is colored yellow. So the conditional formatting would be something like if cell color(fill, etc) = yellow then format to yellow.

hope that is easy enough to understand my question. thanks.

  • What do you think about a treadmill virtual walking/running course dvd to watch while you run?

I think I've seen these before. Basically, you would have a dvd that has various scenic courses that you can run or walk along as you run on the treadmill. Would you all use something like that or is it a dumb idea? Not sure I'd use much or not if I had it. Maybe have it on and have headphones on.

  • Ok to use self leveling compound on garage floor?

My garage floor has a few low spots, as well as nicks and small cracks. I also like the smooth finish of self leveling compound i've used before. Is it okay to use on the garage floor and eventually park on it? I'm not sure what strength it has, but basically i want a nice 1/4" skim coat over the existing concrete surface.

  • How can I block the odor from old asbestos tile adhesive?

The previous owners of my house installed asbestos tile and the black mastic adhesive on the concrete floor in my garage. The tile has been removed and the adhesive was primed and then an enamel coating was painted on. It turned out fine and the enamel looks and performs fine.

My problem is that the asbestos adhesive from the old tile had an odor I can't really describe - sort of a petroleum smell. I was hoping the primer and enamel would block the odor but it doesn't appear that it will now since its been a few weeks with the finished enamel on the floor. So, does anyone know what to do to get rid of the odor short of covering the whole floor with new concrete (if that would even work)?

  • How to check and repair air ducts in concrete slab?

I bought my house about 6 months ago and it was built in the 1950s. My house is on a concrete slab on grade and the air ducts were laid in the slab. My problem is that two of the vents (bedrooms) have very little flow, while the rest in the house blow quite strong. Since the air ducts are in the slab I don't see how there could be air leaks or blockage. I don't see anything blocking flow from the vent end of the ducts. But how do I check to see what is causing the problem and repair it? Anything I can do myself w/o calling in our HVAC guys?

  • What prep do I need to do for garage floor epoxy?

The previous owners of my house laid tiles over the concrete floor in the garage (i don't think they parked their car in it). These are old tiles with a thin adhesive - not like the white caustic adhesive you'd use with ceramic or stone tiles.

So, I want to remove the tiles and put down garage concrete floor epoxy. What do I need to do to prep the floor for good adhesion? And what if I can't get all the old adhesive up?
