I grew up on a farm, we lived about 40 miles from the nearest town. I remember when Mom brought our first German Shepherd home, I was six. She if the first pet that I really remember, we did have others but they did not make the same inpact on my life as she did. I remember always having a strong love for animals that my parents encouraged. We had cats, dogs, horses, chickens, geese, pigs, and cows. I sometimes wish I could afford more animals now I think I would adopt a whole bunch.

  • I would like to build a raised bed garden around some established trees, will this harm the trees?

I have two Maple trees in my front yard, and would like to do some landscaping around them. Was thinking of planting some shade loving perennials, but am scared that building up the soil/mulch depth around the base of the trees may cause harm to the trees.

  • Does anyone know how to clean the canvas on a pop up camper?

Last year I loaned out my camper to my sisters family, while opening it up to air it out I found what appears to be a blood stains in several places on the canvas. Also there are a few spots of what looks like mildew. I am worried if I use a commercial cleaner that I will make that spot less water proof, should this type of camper be water proofed as well? Bought it used from an older couple, so am unsure of all the ins and outs of camper care........Thanks in advance for any helpful answers.

  • Random question about your dogs?

Just sitting here sneezing because I have a cold, watching my Yorkie Oscar. Seems like every time I sneeze( I do sneeze extremely loudly), Oscar starts barking loudly, runs around the house and finishes his mad dash by chasing his tail. Which I find to be hilarious. Well it got me wondering what random things does your dog do, and do they make you smile or want to pull your hair out?

I will pick a best answer.

  • Pet friendly hotels, do you know any?

Planning a long family trip from Western Wisconsin to Houston, Texas. Would like to bring my dogs. Would like the names of a few pet friendly hotels and if you have used them, would like to know if you would use them again. Trip is for the end of June. Just in case I will be checking into Dog boarding, or having a pet sitter as well.

I will be staying with my sister when I get there, so I just need hotels for there and back home.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Lab mix Puppy, can you help?

My niece is getting a lab mix puppy, which she wants to train herself. My niece tries hard and will do her very best, but she is not the smartest. Can any of you recommend EASY to read and easy to understand books on training? Not just obedience, but gun dog training as well. I have already talked to her about how dogs are like people some don't learn as fast as others, and some learn better with different training methods. I have also reminded her that some dogs never learn to be gun dogs, she says its okay. If her dog doesn't learn to hunt it will have to be a very large lap dog.

  • Does anyone use Magicjack as their primary phone service?

My parents are considering switching to Magicjack to save money on their phone bill. My dad learned about it on a t.v. infomercial. Before they run out and switch I told them I would see what I could find out about the product, the one my dad heard about was Magicjack Plus, which does not need a computer. If you have used this product, could you please let me know if it lives up to the hype? Thanks.

  • Does any one know how to pastuerize eggs?

I have a recipe to make eggnog and it calls for pasteurized egg whites. My mother insists I can use regular egg whites because you can not pasteurize eggs. I know it can be done and would like to explain the procedure to her, but I have no idea how one does it. Thanks in advance for those of you who answer.

Just so you know I have no intention of making the eggnog using RAW EGGS.

  • Would you get your dog glasses?

While reading my e-mails tonight came across one which I found to be pretty interesting, and something I had never heard before, which was eye glasses for dogs with poor vision. People can take their dogs to a special Veterinary Optometrist who will check their eyes and prescribe glasses to those who need it. The dogs who benefit the most are those who have diminishing eye sight due to old age, and those who had cataracts. The glasses would be specially made by Doggles, and run around 100.00 dollars. I have never heard about this, maybe because my dogs have never shown signs of diminishing sight. When I was a kid we did have a German Shepherd who lost her sight and was completely blind in her old age after developing scar tissue on her eyes, could glasses have helped her regain her sight? Since diminished sight is tied to old age this e-mail really caught my attention. I started to wonder if any of my dogs would require glasses in the future. It also got me thinking, how do they go about determining the proper strength for the lenses.

Has any one gotten glasses for their dogs? How does the Optometrist preform the eye exam?

What are the signs that your dog needs glasses?

Would you purchase glasses for your dog?

  • While reading my e-mails tonight I came across an interesting article about dogs and their sight.?

The article was about glasses for dogs with failing sight. All though I am a long time dog owner this is something I had never heard of mostly because my dogs(the exception being my first dog when I was a kid) have never had vision problems. Since this is one of those things that could easily happen to your dog as it gets older the article really sparked my interest. Now a few years ago I splurged and had laser corrective surgery done on my eyes, so I no longer have to visit the Optometrist every year. But I remember having the optometrist flicking back and forth through the lenses asking which is better a or b.

Has anyone here had their dogs vision checked by a pet optometrist?

Is the exam similar to a persons check up?

How did you know that your dog needed glasses?

Would you shell out the money to purchase special glasses for your dog?

    Thanks for your answers.

  • Good grief, what can a person do to avoid this problem with their Dog(s)?

I got home from work a little earlier than normal, and caught Judge Joe Brown on t.v. The Plaintiffs were suing a back yard breeder. Apparently this particular breeder had advertised "PURE BREED TEACUP MALTIPOOS" for sale, which is just what the Plaintiffs were looking for. They visited the BYB and decided they liked the pups so they purchased them paying the BYB a higher than normal price for the "PURE BREED TEACUP MALTIPOOS"(Sorry keep having to say that part as I find it highly amusing.) Well the plaintiffs surprisingly enough were not suing the BYB, because their pups were ill breed runts, with multiple health problems, Nope not at all. They were suing her because the puppies GREW and GREW, and turned out to be(you guys probable guessed it) normal Maltese/Toy Poodle sized dogs. A vet was brought on the show to examine the dogs, and she informed the judge that there was no way you could guarantee size of mixed breeds. Also after the quick exam found the dogs to be a little over weight, not obese, but they could each lose a couple of pounds. Judge Joe Brown ruled in favor of the defendant, because she had provide the plaintiffs with the dogs they wanted.

Plaintiffs kept insisting after the ruling that they never received the promised "PURE BREED TEACUP MALTIPOOS".

Now I ask you, what should a person do to avoid this problem?

  • Music study for dogs with anxieties?

I was reading a article for Pet's Place about giving your dog the spa treatment. In the article they discussed the perfect music to use to help your pet relax. Apparently a study was done involving music which identified specific criteria that dogs find soothing. The music composer who did Disney's Baby Einstein Cd's made a cd called Music My Pet.

This cd is supposed to help sooth dogs during stressful times like storms, fireworks and being home alone.

I was wondering if anyone here had ever used this cd to calm your dogs down?

If you have not, would you?

Do you think that this would work for anxieties in abused dogs?

Do you just have a general comment to offer about how you help ease your dogs anxieties?

None of my dogs has any anxieties, but you never know what the future can bring.

  • Are you prepared for a real emergency?

When I got home from work to day I was reading my e-mails, I had received one from the AKC. It is kind of like the magazine offering different stories and articles for you to read. One of the articles jumped out at me It was ARE YOU PREPARED, its about what to do if you need to evacuate and what you should have in your pets first aid kit. Well it has been awhile since I needed to use mine so I dug it out. I definitely need to stock up on a few things and replace some stuff. Now the article also provided a list here is the site:

    http://www.akc.org/pdfs/news/are_you_prepared.pdf

My first aid kit is very basic I would like those of you who have first aid kits to please review this list and let me know if you would add anything to it especial if you have a substitute that might cost a little less but work just as good or if you have something in yours that you think is better. Also If you have any other sites like this one could you please share thanks in advance.

I am putting this in other pets because I have several kinds(cats, birds, dogs, and horses) and I use the kit for all my animals.
