  • How do I make discs of ice?

For a household experiment I'm going to try, I need several discs of ice half an inch thick to 2 inches thick, and between 2 and 6 inches across. They don't really need to be smooth or even uniform... just roughly disc-shaped, and I need several of about the same size. The parameters are VERY flexible here.

My question is what a good way to do this is? Some ideas that I have had are:

    - Freeze water in tin or aluminum can end one inch deep. The problem is that I have limited freezer space.

    - Acquire a cardboard tube, slice it into discs, and honey-glue them together with index cards between to make a tower. The problem is that this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Again, just searching for ideas. I have a pretty accessible variety of resources, and there's a general store down the street for items I don't have.

    Thanks in advance!

  • At what point did schools stop encouraging right-handedness?

I know that older schools used to force right-handedness upon the left-handed populace, and I also know that newer schools do not. At what point did it leave common practice?

  • Why does no one in the NT refer to Jesus as Immanuel?

    Isaiah 7:14

"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel."

And yet, no one in the NT EVER refers to Jesus by that name.

I'm just wondering what a Christian response to this looks like, because I've never heard anyone address this.

  • How many X ray images...?

I'm looking for a way to estimate this, and I have no idea where to start. If you might even point me in the direction of a place I can look for data, that might help.

I'm trying to figure out how many people have had X rays taken, either as a percentage of the population for a given date, a total over a period of time, or something. As long as it's a measurement of the number of X ray images vs population in some way, I can probably get it to work.

This is for a presentation on the utility of scientific discovery, for those who are curious.

  • Why do you study philosophy?

I'm not looking for a silly answer or a joke. I really want to know:

    1) Why do you think philosophy is worth studying?

    _____[A] Is it practically useful?

_____[B] Is knowledge good in and of itself?

    _____[C] Other

    2) Do you think all philosophy is worth studying or just a few branches? Ontology, metaphysics, philosophy of religion, epistemology, philosophy of science... these are ALL branches... which do you think are worth studying, and why?

Thanks everyone! (This should be interesting...)

  • What would happen if a city continuously filed false warrants?

Let's say I'm a paranoid person and think that the city I live in is going to issue a bunch of false warrants to punish me for something that I was tried for, and was found innocent of, because they believe I am guilty and want me to be punished indirectly. What would I do if I WAS indeed receiving false warrants?

(Note: this is hypothetical. Saying stuff like "there aren't really people after you," or "I doubt a city would do that," is NOT going to answer the question. I just want to know for curiosity's sake.)

  • How would I know if a warrant was real?

Let's say I'm a particularly paranoid person, and I think that people are going to come to my house dressed as police officers falsely claiming to have a warrant. How would I know if the warrant wasn't real?

  • Is there a law which requires law enforcement officials to enforce laws?

    Hypothetical scenario:

    Person A violates law X.

Person B has video evidence of the violation of X within the confines of state law regarding video surveillance.

B presents the evidence to law enforcement official C.

C takes no action toward the enforcement of X.

Is C breaking any known laws? Is there a federal or state law regarding the enforcement of laws? Where would I find such a law?

    Thank you.

  • A brief moral question for Theists?

Many Theists (Predominantly Christians) accuse atheists of having no moral system, or having no evidence that something is wrong. I'll set up an alternative scenario:

You are in Pakistan. An orphanage stands in front of you, and on the inside are 100 orphan children being indoctrinated with radical Islamist values (The ones that involve being on a holy mission from Allah to destroy non-Muslims) and being trained with weaponry. Although they haven't killed anyone (to your knowledge), you know fully well what will become of them. You have a button in your hand that will detonate explosives which will kill everyone in the building. You are lying on the ground and have a gun pointed at your head, and, as far as you can tell, you will die in about .5 seconds whether you push the button or not.

Does your superior morality in some way make this decision easier to make?

    Notes:

    1) I'm not in any way saying that this decision is easier for me. I'd like you to at least consider that you are just as clueless as everyone else when it comes to what is right and wrong.

    2) Undoubtedly, two different Theists claiming to be of the same faith will give two different answers. If your morality comes from the same place, why is it that you will give different answers?

    3) Yes, "Theists" is in the title... but atheists are more than welcome to respond.

Evidently there are cases in which abruptly ceasing alcohol consumption after long periods of consuming large volumes can lead to heart failure.

  • Dear the people of Australia?

I was born to American parents, in America, raised in America, and currently live in America. Naturally, I possess, and find most natural to hear, an American accent, which, also naturally, comes across to me as no accent at all.

I assume you can identify with the same phenomenon, thinking that your accent is no accent at all, and thinking that other accents are "accents."

As an American thinking that other accents are "accents," and also as a typical American mostly incapable of distinguishing between a British and Australian accent, I wonder:

Does the British accent, to you, sound as different as the American accent? When you hear a British accent alongside an American accent, is there a level of difference that you can identify?

Note: I don't mean to ask if you can tell the difference. I only mean to ask if you feel that your accent is closer, in a way, to the British accent than it is to the American accent.

    Thank you.

  • What is the leading evolutionary explanation for autism?

I've read the science article suggesting that autism may have been useful in the path, when humans were hunter gatherers, and there was little need for being social. The following is a link to the summary:

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/06/11060...

And this is a link to the study it is summarizing:

My question: is this the leading explanation? If it is not the most widely accepted theory, what is?

    Thank you.

  • possible father troubles?

So a woman sleeps with a man... soon after, a child is born. The only people who know that it was that man's are the mother and that man.

Now this man is a pretty screwed up one, and he would NOT be a good father. If he gets evidence that he's the father, he'll demand visitation, and we're 99% sure that that will reeeally eff up the child. Now, he isn't doing anything legally wrong. Really what the complaint is is that he's just prone to raising spoiled brats, and not really watching out for what they're doing (girls going off and getting pregnant and things like that.) so one can't just get the court to refuse him visitation.

However... if the mother were to deny him any evidence, then all would be solved, right? Is there ANY way for the mother to deny a DNA test? Religious, legal, or medical excuses will suffice.

  • financial assistance for an abortion?

Are there any programs out there to give financial assistance to those seeking an abortion?

The mother-to-be is on welfare assistance already under her mom's household if that helps.

    Thank you very much.

Note: (I'm open to alternatives, but unless it's a reeeeally good one, I'm going with whoever just answers the question I asked.)

  • Is it possible to temporarily lighten hair color?

I have a medium brown hair color that's about like this:

    http://www.talkingmakeup.com/pics/news/kimi91.jpg

It's a little less uniform... but anyway... is there a way for me to :temporarily: change my hair color to a nice yellow? Like super-saiyan yellow?

Note: change must be temporary. If I can't, I'll get a wig... but hair color would be much better.

  • If God exists, why did this evil happen?

So I live with my girlfriend, and like 20 minutes ago, some girl just came knocking on our door, rambling about her boyfriend beating her up, trying to rape her and whatever.. she was very drunk.. she sits on our couch and asks to use our phone to call her phone that she thinks she lost when she didn't even have one when she came in. So my girlfriend's mom lends her a cell phone, and the girl's boyfriend picked up. She goes outside to talk to him, and when we went to check on her, she'd disappeared. My girlfriend's mom is now -1 phone! How could God let this happen?!?!
