  • Which Major should I list?

Hello All! I am currently applying to a graduate school and would very much appreciate some GPA-related advice:

    My cumulative is 3.73

My Biology Major GPA is 3.6

My Geology Major GPA is 3.8

This particular program is a PhD-only Biology Program. Nevertheless, I am applying to work with faculty on paleontology (hence my double major).

One section of the application requests my undergraduate major and that major's GPA. I am conflicted as to if I want to list Biology with my weaker GPA, list Geology with my stronger GPA, or write both and calculate a combined major GPA. I'm not sure which to do.

The reason it isn't as obvious of a decision to me is that this school states that they like to see GPA's above 3.6 (not required). My cumulative puts me in the clear, but my Biology GPA may look marginal.

Any advice? Any and all help is appreciated!

  • Worried about Graduate School Qualifications?

Hello All! I am a senior majoring in geology and biology and plan on attending graduate school next year. I am specifically looking into geology/earth science programs to study Archean paleontology.

Here are some of my qualifications:

    - 3.75 GPA

    - GRE Percents: 70 Verbal, 68 Quantitative, 93 Writing

    - Performed research since summer after freshman year:

--> 1 summer in Sweden studying glaciers

--> 1 summer studying salamander ecology

--> ongoing self-designed research on brachiopod paleoecology

    - 2-year tutor for biology classes (Assigned to 1 class each semester to hold evening review sessions)

    - Field experience in vertebrate paleontology at the K-T boundary (summer course through a different uni)

Now here's where I am concerned:

Most geology graduate programs require two semesters of calculus-based physics; I've only taken one semester of trig-based physics through PSEO (counts at my uni). Even though I want to specialize in paleo/biogeochem, this pops up as a requirement for all geology grad students at many schools.

My second concern is my field camp experience. My summer working at the K-T boundary was through a paleontology field methods course that served as my undergraduate field camp requirement (my uni doesn't have its own camp, so we have to find one elsewhere). I'm starting to kick myself over it since many schools want a 6-8 credit mapping-based field camp.

I'm not sure what to do...but would anyone out there have any advice?

  • Would you Insure a Study Abroad Like This?

I am currently a sophomore: Biology and Geology double major.

I have currently applied for 5 research internships (REUs) for the summer and am awaiting their replies in a month or two. I had a research experience with my professor at my institution last summer, so I'm hoping that experience will help my applications greatly.

However, I'm also trying to plan on what to do if I were to not be selected for any internships.

Every other year, my geology professor conducts a 3-week course in Northern Italy on the geomorphology of the Alps during the summer. This is a study abroad program that highly interests me, but it requires a $400 down payment due in about two weeks, well before I would hear back from any of my internship opportunities. I am having trouble deciding if the benefits of paying the $400 and signing up for the study abroad to insure I have a spot is worth the chance of me getting rejected everywhere I applied. I have strong applications, but you just never know.

Another note I should add: By taking a 2-credit independent study this summer (pseudo-research experience I guess), I would be qualified for financial aid to help pay for the full amount of the study abroad. In addition, I was awarded $2500 scholarship money from my university if I take a study abroad while I'm enrolled. In summary, I have definite financial aid if I were to for sure take the study abroad.

Getting accepted into a research opportunity, however, is my priority. The study abroad comes second, but I would love to do it if I'm out of luck on research internships. What do you think? Would a $400 down payment to ensure my spot be a worthy investment? I can always drop the study abroad if an internship accepts me, but I won't be able to recover that $400 once it's paid.

Thanks for any and all help!

  • My girlfriend is troubled?

We just finished our freshman year of college, and she has returned home for the summer. I live here in Minnesota, same state as our college, but she lives in Virginia.

Her home life is terrible. All she does is work for her grandparents to help pay off what they put into her tuition, and sit at home the rest of the day. She only, and rarely, sees one of her old friends, and our conversations always lead to how depressed she is. She's always been a bigger girl, but when she's bored or depressed, she eats. This scares me, because one of the many reasons she hates herself is because of her body, which causes even more depression, causing more eating.

Her parents seem to never really socialize, and they never even eat together. Everytime I ask what she's doing, her response is that she's just sitting in her room. I've asked her to think about taking up a hobby or trying a minor exercise regime to help her feel better, but it has become apparent to me that she has no ambition to do so.

Probably her biggest problem is her anxiety. She considers herself worthless, no matter how much I tell her otherwise. Her parents are the reason she lives a poor life, so helping her with college plans gets put on the shoulders of her grandparents. Every time they attempt to talk to her about finances, she can't take, breaks down, and cries. She says that they make her feel like she's wasting her time, but I know they're only concerned with helping her. I've tried to teach her how to confront them and keep herself together, but even as I write this, she keeps responding to me with texts like "I don't know..." or "I don't think I can...".

We've dated for close to a year now. I always knew she had problems, but this summer was a slap to my face. She constantly says that she hates her life, wants to be back here, and doesn't know what to do. I have offered time after time to speak with her grandparents/parents myself, but as soon as I'm serious about it, she tells me I don't have to, and drops it. She tells me that she trusts me and her grandparents, but her actions do not follow. I want to help her, but she's not letting me and I can't take it anymore.

I'm going to be gone for three weeks really soon, meaning no phone, and no contact from the outside world, since I'm doing research with my geology advisor. If anyone has similar experience or any advice, please help me. I want her to be happy, and I've spent well over half of our conversations with the opposite news.

  • How do I know which terminals to go to for my flights?

In 3 weeks, I will be traveling from Minneapolis to Stockholm, with a connection in Chicago O'Hare. I booked the flight roundtrip on expedia, and received me itinerary, but I can't seem to find out which terminal/gate I'm supposed to go for any of my flights.

I would really like to know this, because my connection in Chicago lasts only 1.5 hours, so studying the airport and knowing where I have to go is essential.

  • Could this count as a carry on?

I'm flying to Sweden for glacial research, and am curious if my day pack can swing as a carry on so I can use my 1 allowed checked bag to be an equipment box. My day pack is an REI Mars 80

    http://www.rei.com/product/795513/rei-ma%E2%80%A6

All of my own items go in the bag. I will be wearing the majority of my layers while I travel, so the bulkiest clothing will not be in the bag, and my only electronic is my iPad (which could even just be in my hands). Bottom line: I'm certainly not stuffing it.

American Airlines is my first flight, and their website has a 22'' length limit, which my bag is naturally just a few inches longer. Does anyone know if they'd be strict about following this rule at the counter, especially if I stay within the width and height limits?

  • Questions about train travel in sweden?

If anyone's familiar with train travel in Sweden, would you happen to know the best site for me to purchase train tickets?

Also, since I'm going to Kiruna from Stockholm, the train will travel through the night. Do only sleeper cars travel that far north, or is a standard seat acceptable?

  • My girlfriend is very troubled?

We started dating this last year when we moved to college for freshman year. I live in the same state as our college (Minnesota) and she lives in Virginia. It was not until a few months after we started dating when I realized that she is a troubled individual.

Her family life is not great at all from what I've heard. She has told me that she hates living in Virginia, and wants nothing more than to be back here. Her dog was the only reason she loved being home, and he unfortunately passed away a month before she returned for the summer. Her dad is quite childish, and gets angry for the stupidest things. However, she has great grandparents, and has the ability to spend time with them instead. From what she's told me, she hasn't seen any of her friends, as they are busy all the time. I keep trying to encourage her to schedule times to hang out with them, but I don't think she's putting in the effort to do so. Whenever we talk, the conversation always comes back to how lonely and depressed she is. When this happens every day, it makes it seem that there's nothing more I can say to help her. Its as if she's wanting me to do something I don't have the ability to do.

I am staying on campus this summer because I am a science major and doing research with my professors, so I'm not always available to respond to her rants. I've always been told that I am an overly-optimistic guy, as I always seem to be happy or at least content with life. I truly wish my girlfriend could see the joys in her life and be happy. I can clearly tell she is depressed, and I know that when she gets depressed, she shuts down and can't get anything done.

I want to help her, but I honestly think there's nothing else I can do. I don't want to hear about how miserable her day was anymore. Instead, I want her to tell me what good things happen every day, and I want to hear how much fun she's having with her break from college. Please help?

  • Is my computer's memory messed up?

My computer (HP laptop) is acting extremely slow, and can't even respond to programs, or even shut down without spacing out about half way. I have run a virus scan and system recovery in safe mode, and uninstalled Spore and Sims (my only two games). I'm wondering if it has to do with memory. I accessed My Computer, and these came up:

Local Disk (C:) 356 of 441 GB free

    Recovery (D:) 2.16 of 19.9 GB free

    HP_TOOLS (E:) 1.07 of 3.95 GB free

Do any of these three hard drives have too much memory being used? I can't even open task manager because it stops loading after about 10 seconds.

If these aren't the issue, any other suggestions or input is appreciated, Thanks!

  • System Restore not working?

Hello, my computer is able to start up, but is unable to load any programs right after. Everything freezes up and I have no choice but to shut it down. If I let it sit, the screen will black out like it normally does for screen saver, but doesn't come back when I move the mouse around.

I tried to fix this by entering safe mode and running a system restore for 2 days ago. However, I am stuck on a black screen with the mouse icon still visible and movable. I've been waiting because I'm afraid forcing it to shut down without finishing the restore may be bad. Should I just go ahead and shut down?

Also, does anyone have any other suggestions to fix the original problem? Thank you

  • Is my next semester too crazy?

I am a double major Biology and Geology, and have these three classes next semester:

    Organic Chemistry I

    Cell Biology

    Mineralogy and Crystallography

My goal is paleontology, and I found a class called Historic Geology available that semester as well. The Pre-req for my school's paleontology course (2 years from now) is either Historic Geology, or my current biology course (so I'm already in). But historic geology also counts as a geo elective.

I don't know if I want to take historic geology or not, because that would mean four classes WITH labs. (16 credits)

Does anyone have experience in packing lab based classes together like this? Remember, this would be two geology courses, a biology, and a chemistry all in one semester.

    Thanks!

  • Were the Greek philosophers really that great?

Intelligent conversation only! I'm a college student, and I'm looking for people's thoughts.

As a biology major, the name Aristotle seems to come up frequently ... QUITE frequently.

I personally have a difficult time wrapping my head around the idea that Aristotle, Plato, and other Greek philosophers really accomplished as much as we are taught. I have no doubts that they were great minds, assuming they existed, but I question the completeness of what they achieved.

Does anyone else feel that their achievements may have been stretched throughout history?

  • Second major, or just minor?

I'm a biology major at the U of Minnesota, and entered school with 47 gen-ed credits complete (meaning I only have 4 gen-ed classes left)

With this opportunity, I took it upon myself to add a minor in geology, but am now debating if whether or not I should just major in it as well.

My overall goal is to study evolutionary development as it relates to the environment, meaning my biology courses will emphasize ecology genetics. However, I think it would be helpful to be knowledged in geology, as it would help study the abiotic factors of the Earth's changes.

The only downside I may see to this is that I would be too busy to pursue the honor's program, which is probably not that big of a deal, but I'm not sure. What do you guys think?
