  • What's the best PC software for learning to play the guitar?

Are any of the software packages truly good, or do I need to find a human teacher?

My guitar hero for the last 43 years has been Keith Richards, but I wouldn't want to completely close the door on learning classical guitar as well.

  • Suggestions for a birthday/graduation gift?

I have a young friend who just graduated from high school and will be attending college in the fall. Also his birthday is next weekend, and I would like to get him something nice as a combination graduation/birthday gift.

This young man is brilliant, a superb musician, and probably the nicest 17-year-old I've ever met. I'm willing to spend a couple hundred bucks or more, if there's something that will really help him. Mainly I'm interested in hearing from college students about whether there was anything they found that they needed in their first year of college, that they hadn't anticipated. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

  • Looking for a cabin for a week?

I'm willing to go anywhere in the continental US to find a cabin in the woods or the mountains where I can spend about a week - probably including the Memorial Day weekend. Many state parks have reservable cabins like this, but I'm looking for some experienced advice. I would be alone, so it doesn't have to be big. Probably the main restriction is that many of these places are already reserved for the period I want (roughly May 21 - 28, although there is some flexibility). It doesn't have to have a phone or a TV, but I want to be able to shower and cook, and I would at least want electricity. I'd like stay under $100 per night, but that's not an absolute requirement. But I don't want a beach or lakeshore cottage - I want it to be shaded, preferably deeply.

    Any ideas?

  • How do I find a good Chardonnay?

I'm a teetotaller, but two weeks from now I will be meeting a couple of ladies on whom I want to make a good impression, and I'm supposed to bring a bottled of chilled Chardonnay. I know nothing at all about wine, and when I go to different wine-related websites it seems like there are a million different brands and vintages, each of which have one enthusiastic recommendation.

I don't have to spend big bucks or anything - I'm not trying to blow these people away, I just don't want to look like a complete rube or a total cheapskate. I'd prefer to stay under about $30. So how do I go about finding something decent, here in the Las Vegas area? Preferably, I'd like a recommendation that I can be almost sure to find at any liquor store or even a supermarket. Thanks to anyone who can help!

  • How do I make my office chair recline?

Almost all execuitive, swivel, office chairs have the same mechanism underneath. I have owned several of them in my life. And almost every one has occasionally got stuck so I can't lean back in it. I've looked closely at everything underneath, and have never been able to figure out what to do. Sometimes it fixes itself, but I haven't been able to detect anything different about the mechanism underneath when it reclines vs. when it doesn't.

This time I have a BRAND NEW chair and it doesn't recline (even though I'm sure it's supposed to - it has the same mechanism underneath as all the others), and the whole thing is getting very aggravating. So who can help me?

This is my first question ever, after earning 2383 points by giving answers - so please don't let me down! :-)
