I received a B.S in chemistry and a B.S. in geology in 2004, and recently graduated with a Ph.D. in geochemistry. My thesis research involved studying crystal growth processes in minerals using time-resolved X-ray diffraction, and my current research looks at mineral stabilities at high pressure. As an undergrad, I served as a TA in both intro chemistry and intro geology courses for four years, and came to love teaching. I'm a big fan of the periodic table, and have also come to love mineralogy and crystallography. I have a large collection of both elements and minerals which I'm constantly working to improve. Outside of school, my hobbies include writing and recording music, writing non-fiction, and traveling. I love sharing science with people, so keep asking questions!

  • What is wrong with my girlfriend?? Cancer, a weird autoimmune disease, something else?

For the past several weeks my girlfriend has had an array of symptoms that come and go randomly with no apparent cause. Doctors have not been able to diagnose her. Here are the symptoms.... please let me know if this sounds familiar to anyone:

    - Fever that comes and goes randomly.... sticks around for 1-3 days at a time, and then disappears.

    - Constant fatigue

    - Nausea and vomiting, even when she stops eating food. The nausea is normally worst in the morning, and frequently occurs along with the fever, but not always

    - Loss of appetite

    - Joint pain, especially in her toes, ankles, and fingers

    - Sweating at night, although this could just be from the breaking of the fever

She has been tested for every type of infection known to man and results are always negative, so if your pet theory involves a bacterial or viral infection, your pet theory is wrong. Also, she's been on antibiotics almost this entire time, and they have no effect on the occurrence of the symptoms, in fact, they are slowly getting worse over time. Also, we know that she is diabetic, but she continues to take insulin and maintains normal blood sugar levels while having symptoms, so we know the symptoms are NOT from the diabetes. But this other condition she has might be somehow related to, or exacerbated by the diabetes, or completely unrelated to diabetes.

Please let me know if anyone has any ideas. If I shoot your idea down, please don't be offended... it just means we have been down that road before and have already ruled it out. I'm just worried about her, and I'm looking for any new ideas that haven't been explored yet. Thanks everyone!!

  • How do you make your browser and your wireless internet connection talk to each other?

I recently bought a Linksys wireless card so that I could use my wireless internet service at my desktop PC, which until now has not had access. (My PC is a Dell, and runs with Windows XP Home 2002). The network connection has been established and says that the signal strength is "very good", but despite this, neither Firefox nor IE recognizes that the connection is there. In other words, my network internet connection has been setup, but I can't get any of my browsers to load any webpages.

I have tried setting the network connection setting to both "Direct connection to the internet" and "Auto detect proxy settings for this network", but neither setting fixes the problem. Any ideas???

  • What evidence is there that a single flood is responsible for all geologic phenomena? (a 2nd attempt)?

I have been pondering why creationists will so often try to criticize evolution without having any understanding of what evolution actually says. They make assumptions that are completely untrue, and then ridicule my viewpoint based on their false assumptions. As I thought about it, I realized that perhaps too many evolutionists simply call them wrong without explaining their side.

Then I wondered, am I doing the same thing? Am I ignorant of how creationists view the world? In an attempt to not do the same, I ask for help. I have seen, more than once, creationists make the claim that a single flood is a better explanation of all geologic observations than current geology. Those of you that think this way... please help me understand this view. Simply choose any geologic phenomena, and anyone who gives any evidence or halfway logical explanation for how it can be explained by one flood will get best answer. I do this in an honest attempt to learn, and my judgements will be fair.

  • In unix, how do you extract a zipped file with the ending ".tar.bz2" ?

On a unix system, I am trying to extract some files that are in a zipped file called "MarResults.tar.bz2". However, when I use the command:

    tar xvf MarResults.tar.bz2

I get an error message that says:

    tar: directory checksum error

Does anyone know what is going wrong, or how I need to extract these files? Thanks,
