  • Hot water but no heat?

My friend's house has a hydronic heating system that uses a boiler and indirect water heater. A few weeks ago, the air separator sprang a leak because of rot. She shut off the boiler and closed valves until it stopped pouring out water. I replaced the air separator and vent, opened the valves in a logical order, and got the boiler restarted. Since then, the heat has been wonky at best, but the hot water has been fine.

As far as I can tell, the entire house is a single heating zone (there's only one thermostat), but she has told me that the heat on the second floor has never worked; after the new air separator, when the heat has worked, the second floor has gotten unbearably warm. There is a Taco zone switching relay at the boiler with two LEDs–"Power" (red) and "Zone 1" (green)–the "Zone 1" LED has been off since the problem occurred; it was always on before. I haven't taken the time to trace all the wiring, but the relay is fed through a number of other sources, and seems to have a control circuit to the water heater (two small diameter wires).

The basis of my question is, what about changing the air separator could cause the heating system to fail? I assume air in the system, and I haven't pulled open the baseboards to see if there's a way to bleed them, but why would it work sometimes? (It seemed to work when she decided to set the boiler temp to 220º) The plumbing in this house is a mess, and I've opened every valve that I thought might release trapped air.

  • Does any place near Derry, NH have a big selection of motorcycle riding glasses?

I just bought a bike, and I'm going to need a pair of glasses (I'm absolutely not wearing a helmet with a face mask). However, finding glasses that fit is never an easy task for me--I have a big head and a wide nose bridge--so buying them online really isn't an option. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place between Salem and Manchester, NH with a big selection of glasses where I can try on many different makes and models. Ideally, I'd like to find a pair with polychromatic lenses (light sensitive) so I can have one pair that will be mostly clear at dawn or dusk, but shaded in the midday sun. I'd also like the foam pad around the edge to keep the wind out of my eyes. Hoping someone can keep me from going on a crazy scavenger hunt all over Southern New Hampshire.

  • I really need a Volkswagen expert for this one.

I had a 99 Passat 1.8 turbo (engine AEB) come to me running rough, with the check engine light on. Had codes P0300 and P0302 (16684, 16686). Found the spark plug tubes full of oil, and some leaky injector o-rings. Replaced the valve cover gasket set, spark plugs, ignition coil boots, all eight injector o-rings, and ultimately, injector #2. Still runs like it did when it came in. Compression is perfect, I don't remember the specific reading, but no more than 2 psi difference at most, and fuel pump is generating 80 psi at the fuel rail. Anyone know what else might be causing this?

  • How much more dangerous does it have to get before the open-border amnesty liberals change their minds?

    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,309337,00.html

I don't know about you, but I rank airport security 3rd behind military bases and power plants. So much for the claim that "they come here and do the jobs Americans won't do." Or, if that's true in this case, we've got a much bigger problem.

  • Why does the Democrat-controlled Congress bear no responsibility for its approval rating?

According to Fox News, President Bush's approval rating is at 34.4%, and the Congressional approval rating is at 23.8%. Considering the blind public hatred towards George W. Bush and the Republican party which he currently represents, why does the Democrat-controlled Congress have an even lower approval rating? And as a side note, why is it that the biggest fundamental job of Congress, the Federal Budget, was not submitted on time, the last time being 2002, the last time the Democrats controlled at least one House of Congress?
