I used to be on very regularly, but not as often now. I am a groomer at PetSmart and one day plan to open my own dog training facility. I have two dogs, a 6 month old American Pit Bull Terrier and a 10 y/o Longhaired Miniature Dachshund and I also a 1 y/o Silver tabby. I believe in the raw diet and also high quality kibble.

  • What is the best food for my APBT? Details below, knowledgeable answers please.?

I have a 6 month old American Pit Bull Terrier. I also have a 10 year old Long haired Miniature Dachshund. The Dachshund Lady has sever allergies to food and she eats Fresh Pet refrigerated meals, or raw meals. She does very well on this food. I am looking for a very good quality food for my APBT as far as I know she doesn't have any allergies. I want a food without artificial crap and no fillers/by-products. I work for Petsmart. They sell Blue Buffalo products such as Wilderness, freedom, longevity, and basics. They also have Wellness products, Innova products, and Natures Recipe. I like all those brands. I also like Taste of the wild that is sold by the tractor supply store near me. Rebel has a very sensitive stomach so once she is on a food we won't take her off. She is active and goes walking/running everyday. I want a food that will be very nutritious but also affordable. Here are they below-

  • Professional shampoo?

I am going to try some professional shampoo. But I don't know what to get or where to get it. I know that I need "normalizing" shampoo after reading up. Some of the brands I saw was Redken, Paul Mitchell etc. Where can I get these? I know looking at the salon I go to I don't remember seeing these brands. I saw Bedhead and Nioxin. Are these as good? Please help! Right now I am using Herbal Essense.

  • I got two Gerbils today. Please give me info about them.?

So I work at Pet Smart grooming salon and a woman came in because her parents bought two gerbils for her son for Christmas but she didn't give them permission too. Well the son is too young to care for the pets so she had to and she is terrified of them. So she tried returning them to the store. I don't know why but for some reason she couldn't return them. So it was either the cashier find a home for them or they go back with her and she was going to let them go outside. Which would kill them. So I decided to take them in. I've had hamsters but that was several years ago. They are two females. How much are Gerbils like Hamsters? What do I need to know about them? I know the basics.

  • What breeds would fit this criteria?

I am looking for a dog that is at least 50lbs. I don't mind shedding but it needs to have a short coat. I want one that is hyper active and is willing to please. It can have a stubborn streak though. I want a dog with endurance. I will be home often and I will take the dog jogging at least 2 miles everyday. I want to be able to teach the dog competitive sports such as agility, K9 freestyle, obedience, and etc. I don't want a dog with a super soft temperament. I don't want a Lab. I have some breeds in mind. I also don't want any breeds such as Rottweiler, Belgian Malinois, or German Shepherd because I will be getting one of these breeds in future and will be training in schutzhund. Thanks.

  • Would a Dalmatian be right for me?

This is the criteria I want in my next dog-

    High energy

    Endurance

    Highly intelligent

    Easily trainable

    At least 50lbs

    Short coat

I want a dog that I can train for agility, obedience, and other dog sports

I don't want a dog that has a super soft personality

I think a Dalmatian would fit. Can Dalmatian owners give their imputes? Can you suggest other breeds that would fit this criteria? I don't want a lab. Thanks!

  • I got a prong collar for my Miniature Dachshund?

After dealing with my dachshund going after other dogs and trying both the half check and the slip collar I decided to get a prong. I LOVE it. The half check and slip worked well with low stimulation but anything else and I would have to give an *inhumane* yank on the collar to start to get her attention. I took her into Pet Supplies Plus and got her the proper fitting prong. I took her home and introduced it to her and gave her some tidbits of food and a play session to make having the prong on a positive experience. The next day I took her out with it and the the change is AMAZING! A Cocker Spaniel puppy ran up to us and when I would normally have to give a serious correction I barely had to twitch my wrist. I was even more happy when I picked up her worst enemy a Golden Retriever named Scoobie to take them both on a walk. I had to give hardly any correction what so ever and she was good to go. I am officially in love with the prong collar.

So my QUESTION is what are your experiences with the prong? Did you try other collars before deciding on the prong? Do people ever ask you about it being on your dog? (exp. Isn't that cruel?)

  • Can a dog be afraid of the dark?

There are a lot of phobias is dogs but are there some that are afraid of the dark? My aunt who is kind of eccentric was going on and on about how as soon as it starts to get dark they have to bring their APBT/lab mix inside because she is afraid of the dark. Though I have never really heard of dogs truly being afraid of the dark.

  • Does spaying and neutering affect a working dogs performance?

I know a lot of working dogs are not fixed because if they turn out to have the right drive, health, conformation, etc then you would want to breed them. But the dogs that don't and get fixed, do they lose anything not having the extra testosterone or estrogen pumping through them? Or are they the same in everything, just not able to be bred?
