I'm a jerk of all trades with a little knowledge about a lot of things & a lot of knowledge about other things & a lot of common sense. I've done cat & bird/parrot rescues, fostering & adoptions & now take in rats in need of a home - usually unsocialized. My fuzzy family consists of female dwarf hammies since the males died; 1 alpha male spoiled guinea pig; & various male and female rats. I also have run fresh & saltwater fish tanks in the past & am currently down to a betta in a bowl. I homeschool my kid, bake, cook, & do genealogy. I spend some of my time pondering why kids/teens/people get pets without having a clue about the pet. Why don't people research the animal's care, life span, lifestyle, habitat, diet, etc., BEFORE they bring it home? I'm a firm believer that if a dependent child brings home a pet, it is the parent's responsibility to make sure the pet is well cared for, or a pet shouldn't be brought into that home.

  • Have you a inexpensive skateboard recommendation for a kid?

My tall and big footed daughter would like to get a new skateboard since her father disappeared with her old junky hand me down one. There's 21" and there's 31" long. There's 6" wide and there's 8" wide. My daughter is almost 11, about 5' tall and wears an adult woman's size 7 shoe. Which size skateboard should I be looking at? She's a newbie and a cute lil klutz. What do you recommend? Please ABSOLUTELY NO Barbie, Disney or Hannah Montana anything! I'm not looking to buy something pro, but I want something better than a piece of junk (but do take into account that I'm a broke single mom shopping early for Christmas). If you have links or prices, or an online place to get one, that would be helpful too. Thanks!

  • Have you a poundcake recipe that uses egg yolks vs. whole eggs?

A friend without net access is trying to track down a poundcake recipe like her late mother used to make. It called for egg yolks vs. whole eggs or separated eggs. She thinks it took 6 egg yolks. Have you such a recipe to share? Thanks!

  • What's are turkey knuckles?

What part of the turkey are turkey knuckles, or what the heck are they? Doing a google search doesn't reveal any clues, other than I can make a soup with them, or use them instead of ham hocks when cooking greens - but it doesn't tell me what they are!

  • Poppy Seeds - appearance or flavor?

Do poppy seeds really have much flavor, or are they used more for appearance?

I can only think of 3 things to use them for - breads, bagels and rolls - raspberry poppy seed vinegrette - lemon or orange or almond poppy seed muffins. Other than the bread doughs, in the muffins or salad dressing, the other flavor overpowers any flavor of the poppy seed.

So are they used for anything more than an annoyance that gets stuck between your teeth or something that can throw off the results of a drug test?

  • Parents of Tweens/Teens and Internet Access?

Seeing as school's out and there's even more kids online than the norm during the school year, do parents bother to check on their teens and tweens who are allowed internet access? Do parents bother to see what they ask on YA? Myspace, and the like, are bad enough - but between some of the profiles and questions on here, it's getting scary. What do you do to keep your teens and tweens safe online - if anything? How? Do you really trust them online? Why?

  • Blueberry cobbler recipe anyone?

Blueberries have been dirt cheap. I've had enough pies, quick breads, cakes, tarts, muffins, waffles, and pancakes - so I put the last batch of blueberries in the freezer. Does anyone have a blueberry cobbler recipe I can make with the now frozen blueberries? Anything similar that isn't a tart, cake, pie, or muffin would work too. Thanks!

  • What's your funky chicken idea?

I got a whole chicken for only 44 cents a pound, and I've got no room in the freezer. Don't need to make anymore chicken broth yet, so no boiling it. My daughter won't let me cut it up cause she wants the wishbone. I don't want to roast/bake it. I'm craving something different now that my daughter is expanding her palate - arroz con polla, tandoori chicken, just not the usual roast chicken. Anything not involving curry, red/hot pepper, bell peppers, BBQing, smoking, boiling the chicken, or plopping it in a crockpot is a good thing. I'd appreciate an idea for some way you like to make a whole chicken instead of canned recipes from a website. So how do you like to make your chicken a spunky and funky chicken? Thanks!

  • What should I do?

My fat lazy Dumbo rat was driving around the house in my daughter's Barbie Volkswagen, and his Berkshire cagemate was driving around in the purple Barbie Jeep and they crashed! They weren't wearing seatbelts, and they didn't rollover. My "fancy" rat witnessed it all, and was an innocent bystander... well actually he couldn't have been a bystander, since he wasn't standing huh? They don't have whiplash, no broken bones, no blood. The vet is on vacation for the next year, and the only other vet won't see rats and knows nothing about them.

So what's the stupidest/silliest question your read and/or answered today on YA?

  • Popcorn poppers?

My popcorn fiend wants a popcorn popper. I know I can make popcorn in a covered pot on the stove. I was considering a Stir Crazy popcorn popper for about $30. Should I bother? Would I be better off with the stove top popcorn popper pot for about $20? Should I stick to buying microwave popcorn packets, or a hot air popper, or what? Suggestions? Thanks!

  • Oil Misters/Spray Bottles - Should I, and Which Brand?

After reading numerous reviews, I'm still undecided if it's a good idea to purchase a special mister/spray bottle for oil instead of wasting $4 a can of the aerosal olive or canola oil sprays. Do you have one and use it? What brand, or do they all suck? So far I'm leaning towards the Misto brand, but even that has many faults.

  • Disposition/Reset Date: What does this legal term mean?

An adult finally showed up for their court date today for a hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident/careless driving tickets, which was their "plea and set hearing" date. They now were given another court date in 2 weeks for a "disposition/reset date" after pleading not guilty and setting a date in 3 months for a jury trial. What is the purpose of the disposition/reset date? Previously they didn't show up for the court date, a warrant was issued, they were arrested and released on bond with a new court date that they did show up for.

  • Fresh Salsa Ideas for a kid?

My darling child is getting braver and testing out her taste buds with new (and daring, for her) foods. She wants to try tomatillas and has requested I make her a fresh salsa that has tomatillas in it. I could use some suggestions for ingredients - I have fresh lemons and limes, garlic, parsley, tomatoes (that haven't killed us yet!), and onions. I have dehyrdated cilantro. The child doesn't care for onions, especially raw. She doesn't care for cilantro. She doesn't like spicy food and is just starting to eat mildly spiced foods, so that rules out serranos or jalapenos. She also doesn't like sweet bell peppers, raw, roasted, or cooked in anything - but I do have canned green chilis, but I doubt she'll like that. Besides some chopped tomatoes, chopped tomatilla and a squirt of lime juice, what can I do to make a salsa worth making?

  • Do you have a tried and true recipe for Pastitsio that you've made?

I'm looking for a recommended recipe for Greek Pastitsio since I've lost my recipe. If you've made this dish, and care to share your recipe, I'd greatly appreciate it.

  • Anyone else having issues with AVG Anti-Virus Free 8?

So I upgraded the freeware version of AVG anti-spyware to 8 since there wasn't an option to keep 7.5 and get upgrades. It won't scan. It doesn't matter if I'm trying to run a scan of select files, or a scheduled scan. It won't scan. I find it to be very annoying - more than it used to be. Anyone else having problems with it? I've rebooted and reinstalled a few times to no avail. This is why I didn't renew my license with Zone Alarm Pro - annoying!

Also if anyone has any other freeware recommendations, that would be most helpful. Thanks!

  • What life skills are you teaching your children?

Besides the obvious, what are some life skills you're teaching your children/teens besides the standard core lessons you need to be teaching them - i.e., in part, my child is learning how to grow up and be an independent and responsible person, as well as be able to buy groceries, do laundry, cook, and pay bills, as well as take self responsibility for her actions.

  • Do you have a good recipe for strawberry limeade and/or strawberry lemonade?

It requires only 4 ingredients - the lime or lemon juice, sugar, water, and strawberries. I'm using frozen strawberries and fresh juice from the lemons and limes. I don't have measurements of what to throw in the blender (to puree the strawberries). How much water to how much juice? How much sugar (no sugar substitutes!)? How many strawberries?

  • Handwriting and Penmanship - Do you teach it? How?

I have a child with dyslexia and issues with motor skills. Her handwriting is horrid. I've tried and use various tools to help. She has more of an interest in cursive, so we're working on that for now, which seems to be a bit better. She still doesn't use proper letter size, proper spacing, etc. - and nothing is ever consistent. Most letters and numbers are written how she's comfortable in an odd order. Does anyone have any helpful hints, or aids besides pencil grips, foot rests, table height, finger/hand exercises and warm ups, color lined paper, etc? We've worked with OTs in the past, and that wasn't enough help IMO.

  • How do you handle a child with minimal common sense?

Not everyone has common sense. You're either born with it, or not. How can you help your child develop more common sense, besides the normal the flame is hot, don't touch it?

  • What should I make - cake or pie?

I can't decide what to bake today, a cake or pie, or what kind of cake or pie.

I have about a cup of milk left, 4 eggs, some frozen berries and 3 frozen bananas, a stick of butter, a few cups of half and half, a pound of cream cheese, oil, buttermilk powder, a half cup of sour cream, canned pineapple (crushed, chunk, rings), key lime juice, pudding mixes and jellos, as well as a couple of white and vanilla cake mixes. I have flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and Dream Whip mix, sweetened and unsweetened cocoa powders, jams, preserves and jellies.

My daughter and I can't agree on what to make, so I'm opting for somthing new instead of a quick bread, poundcake, key lime pie, pineapple upside down cake, carrot cake, jello poke cake, chocolate cake, or brownies.

Ideas or recipes anyone? It has to use the ingredients I have on hand since I'm not going near a store today.

  • Suggestions for replacing a defective Rival Crockpot?

I've had it with defective Rival crockpots. I've read some reviews, looked at features, and still can't decide. I need it to be 6 quarts, and have high, low and warm settings at least. I'm also looking to spend less than $40 - and if it's sold on amazon.com that's a plus.

Should I do round or oval - or does it really matter? I do roasts in the crockpot as well, and the current one is oval.
