  • Max Planck, Kurt Godel, M.C. Escher, Lewis Carroll?

One of my super-smart Engineers has given me a homework assignment for this weekend. He wants me to tell him what these four men had in common:

    Max Planck

    Kurt Godel

    M.C. Escher

    Lewis Carroll

I will do my best to find my own reply, but I would like something to fall back on in the event I cannot find the answer. Your help is greatly appreciated!

  • Compaq Deskpro EN PC P800?

I want to use this machine the same way you would use a thin- or zero-client device. I will set it up and give it wired eithernet connectivity and allow it to see my main music folder.

It will be installed in a garage or basement with an industrial touchscreen device and I will use it just for multimedia, mainly music but also low internet useage. Nothing big, just some mundane things.

My main question is whether any knowledgable folks have done this before with similar equipment and have any suggestions, insight, or otherwise. I have all of this working equipment for free, I have all the required software. I am capable of doing almost anything required, just looking for some suggestions.

  • Minnesota's Senate Race- Coleman, Franken, and Barkley?

I'm not sure if this has received national attention, but hopefully someone can help me sort this out.

I've met Norm Coleman, and he's a terrific guy. He's proven himself worthy of the job (successful incumbant) and probably deserves re-election.

Al Franken. Makes you wonder- really? I'm not sure what makes him a viable candidate for public office. He owns businesses, but fails to take care of his employees (doesn't pay workers' comp) and has made himself known for line-crossing jokes and public tempter tantrums. What's to like about him?

    Barkley- who?

This election seems to have gone to Coleman by a margin of 570-some votes; MN state law demands a recount for accuracy.

My QUESTION is, how could this be this close? From what I know of Franken, he's a joke. From what I know about Barkley- well, nothing! Can someone give me any kind of indication on what the POSITIVES are for the candidates? Perhaps a few negatives, but I don't want rants, finger pointing and anything else Y!Answers is known for.

Points will go to the most objective, least rant/rave post.

    Thank you.

  • How can I read the Qur'an?

I am a Christian who would like to read the Qur'an, but have no desire or plans to convert. I'd like to read it to broaden my understanding of Islam, but do not want to offend anyone.

While in Iraq I tried to purchase one from some children who would go to the market for me. They told me that they couldn't, because if the people in the market knew they were buying it for an American Soldier they would beat them or try to hurt them or me. They also told me that as a Christian, I could not physically touch the book lest I offend believers and Allah.

I want to read the book or at least find a way to better understand the beliefs, customs, and culture of different Islamic groups. How can I do this while showing respect and deference?

    Thanks-

  • Advice for 401k- reduce or stop?

I've officially started paying someone to keep my money. My 401k has lost more than my employer has contributed (year to date).

I used to put in 10% per paycheck, employer matches 4% max. I dropped this down to 5% when the economy started turning so I could pay off some bills faster. Now that I'm losing my money, should I consider committing all of this capital to paying down debt?

I only owe a couple thousand dollars, none of which is past-due or in bad standing. I realize that I would also be losing employer contributions (free money).

Does anyone have advice? What have you done? I will award the 10 points to the best answer that lists their credentials and offers a well-thought suggestion or plan.

    Thanks!

  • Choosing the right Laptop?

I'm looking for a new laptop, and the only true requirement is that it should cost no more than $2000 US.

I am going back to school, and want something powerful, not too big (15.4 screen) but has plenty of multi-tasking capabilities. I also want to be able to play some video games, store multimedia, watch movies, have good sound... etc.

Basically I want the best Laptop available for 2k or less. Would like it to last me 4 or 5 years with minimal upgrades (HD, fan, etc). Please provide me with Make, Model, your experiences and plenty of justification for why you chose that device.

One more request- please leave out any suggestions that are justified by the fact that your Mom and Dad have one. I will use it more in one week than your folks will all year, I guarantee it!

  • Accuracy of TVs CSI:Las Vegas?

I watch this program very often and I wonder about its scientific accuracy.

In the last episode I saw, a young girl gets hit by a car. They get a call from the coroner who shows them a bruise that clearly gives two letters of a license plate. Those letters, with with paint flecks from the scene give them an address, and ultimately a confession.

My question is twofold- 1) How accurate is this scenario? Specifically, is it feasible to leave a bruise like that from a license plate? I'm skeptical. 2) Overall, how accurate are the methods and scenarios from the CSI: shows in general?

Please also give sources or credentials when answering.
