  • Dog loosing bladder control?

My 11 year old Australian Shepard has been "leaking" normally around night time. Other wise, she is a healthy, happy spunky dog other than a bad back knee from when she was younger.

    What might cause this?

  • I am graduating High School next year and I need help!?

Okay so I will be graduating from HS next year, and I am completely confused on what the whole college experience is going to be like, and what I should major in.

My parent's will be staying in this house until I find a good place to keep my horses, which will probably be after college.

I am going to go to a community agricultural college for my first two years, then if I decide to go into veterinary school, I will transfer over to Oklahoma State University.

What was your college experience like? What did you major in? Did you still find time to be with your horses? How many math classes did you have to take? (I have a very hard time grasping math, it's a miracle I passed this year).

Any tips or things that helped you get through college would be much appreciated!:)

  • Fix to the "Unwanted Horse" problem?

As everyone knows, or should know, there is the overwhelming issue of the "unwanted horse". There are too many breeders of horses that people just don't want or can't care for, and the fact we are in a bit of an economic downturn doesn't help at all.

I've been trying to find ways that could atleast help the issue. Of course there is always the opening of slaughter houses, which is a bit of a last resort really, but it needs to be done. Horses are better off feeding some family in Africa that hasn't eaten a good meal in months, then just standing, starving to death in some pasture with hundreds of other horses.

One thought that came to my mind, is having a breeder's license. Only people who breed high quality horses should really be allowed to breed, you know? Also, only registerable horses. I don't have a thing against non-registered horses (I have one), it's just a good idea to keep track of a horses pedigree through a Registry. Along with the state liscense, all non registered/sub-par studs should be cut.

I know some of this stuff sounds a bit over-dramatic, but the amount of horses that have been allowed to breed and breed needs a dramatic answer.

What is your idea for a "fix"?

  • Horses and College?!?!?

Okay so I'm a junior in High School this year and I'm trying to figure out all of my college plans. I'm going to be selling one of my horses soon, and when I graduate I will be donating my older mare to a theraputic riding center. So, that leaves me with three horses.

I'm planning on going to Oklahoma State University, and taking some equine classes. Freshman aren't allowed to have horses, so for at least my first year I'm going to have to board my horses somewhere. I'm going to try to find a place that will allow me to board (even if its just renting a small pasture with a shed) for fairly cheap, and to pay off my boarding fees to work around the facility, giving riding lessons, cleaning stalls, literally, whatever it takes. I'm also going to need to find a job (any ideas??) that will help me pay for my horses feed, farrier, vet (lets PRAY for no emergency calls! lol!), etc. And, for a little extra cash so I can pay for my own food and neccessities (honestly, I'm just going to buy food and stuff like that...I have enough clothes), I'm going to lease my mare out. I'm going to try out for the OSU Equestrain team (I think you do that your second year at the college...), and I hope that goes well!!!!

Does this sound like a good plan?

    Any changes, or tips?

What was your college experience like with your horses?

Any advice would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks!!!!!:)

  • How do I get through this?

Rebel is my baby...he is an amazing horse...

I found out today I can't ride him any more..Never again..I had so many high hopes for him...I wanted to get him to the APHA world one day...all those dreams are down the drain.

He fractured his shoulder a long time ago and we never knew. He never showed it...till now. He recently started limping, and we had a vet out. She wasn't comfortable doing a shoulder block, so we took him to a big equine vet clinic. They flexed his muscles, trotted him everywhere, nothing. The vet did a nerve block on his shoulder joint, and when he pulled the needle out there was blood in it, not good. He thought it might be arthritis, and I was happy..something that could be helped. But they took him in to get x-rays, and the doctor let us look at them before he said anything. Just looking at the x rays, you could tell something wasn't right. The doctor told us at somepoint, Rebel had fractured his shoulder joint, and even though it healed amazingly well, it didn't heal right..A chip from the bone has been boring away at the joint, thus the blood (coming from inside the bone). He told me at this point there was nothing I could do for him, and I could no longer ride him. I burst into tears on the spot. It hurts him to completely stretch out his shoulder. Why him?? He is only 7 years old..it feels like he has pretty much died. I have no clue how to deal with this...my grandpa died only 2 weeks ago and now this.. I'm not really sure what to do..

Can anyone give me some cheering up or insparation on what my horse could still do with his life? I'd hate to see him just be in a pasture for the rest of his life...

    Thanks:)

  • I think my barn cat is sick...?

So i have a cat that eats mice and of course normal cat food..

I went out to feed horses earlier, and she was DROOLING. She was just sitting there with a puddle of drool at her feet and what appeared to be bubbles around her mouth. I'm thinking rabies, but she wasn't acting aggressive or wobbling around....

I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow, but any ideas on what is wrong with her??

  • What song would work best!?!?

Okay so I need a song that would work for a tribute thing to Marylin Monroe. I'm on an equestrain drill theme and we were thinking of dressing up as her for a theme ride, but we can't find any good, fast pace music that would work well for it. Any ideas????

Here is a video of our drill from this year to give you an idea:P

  • So my horses are getting into a peach tree...?

There is a peach tree on the other side of our pasture fence. The horses have never been able to reach the fruit on it till this year. I noticed a bunch of pits by it, and when I went to go ride my horse, he was chewing on a peach!! Are peaches poisonous to horses? There fairly small peaches, about the size of a kiwi.

  • Your opinion on SMX Air Ride pad?

Okay so I have this SMX Air Ride Saddle pad..I don't like using it at all! The spine is completely flat. I don't know about you, but I have never seen a horse whose back its completely straight from their withers to their hip. I have a few high withered horses, and when I put it on with a saddle, the spine gets all crumpled up becuase it can't flex or conform or whatever to my horses back, and it also pulls really hard on my horses withers if I don't pull the front of the pad like 5 inches off my horses withers. Maybe I'm just complaining, but I seem to be one of the only people that doesn't really like these pads. What are your thoughts on these pads?

  • How long does it take for an abscess to come up in the hoof?

My mare has been lame for the past week on her left front and we had her come out and she determined she had an abscess in her hoof on the righ side and it should come up around the cornet band. I have been soaking it in warm water, epsom salt and bedadine for about 3 or 4 days now and nothing has happened. How long should it take for it to come up??

Also...Her shoulder has been rather tender when you press on it. Could the heat on her hoof which the vet determined as an abscess be something else realated to her shoulder?

IF she doesn't change by tomorrow, we are going to call the vet..but yeah my mom wanted me to ask so yeah lol

  • I would like to have your opinion:)?

Do you think we put to much pressure on winning compared to just having fun?

    My opinion:

I always have prefered to go to smaller shows. The bigger the show I go to, the more snobby, rude people I have to deal with and its not where near as much fun as it should be. I understand being competitive, but it seems like a lot of horseman have lost their "sportsmanship". I go to shows to have fun, and when I have fun, I do good. I tell the younger riders good luck and good job and help them when they might need it, and I'm nice to the adults and other riders my age. But I have acted nice to some people, and they just get soo rude about it! I mean honestly. If your not having fun, why do it? I can understand the money, and the glory and all, but that doesn't always last forever. Also, I have known so many girls to come crying out the arena when something doesn't go right and then get screamed at by their parents. Sure, they paid the entery fee's and all, but with that kind of pressure something is bound to go wrong. A lot of parents seem to ruin the fun of having a horse by putting so much pressure on just winning and not trying your best. Who knows, maybe I am just rambling on about something. But what is your opinion? I'd really like to see what you guys have to say:)

  • (we all love answering this question, eh?) What color would he look best in?

Okay so I have a red dun (looks more yellowy sorrel to me) tobiano paint gelding:) I will be getting him onto barrels and such hopefully soon. He is 16 hands and growing (hurray for me being short lol). What that has to do with this, I dunno. I was trying to figure out what color of tack I should go with. I have used baby blue stuff on him, and he really didnt look all that great. I have also used royal blue, pink and purple, and the poor guy looks really nice in pink lol. But I'm going to respect him and try to find a more "manly" color for him. What do you guys think? Does he look okay in royal blue?

    here is his head shot:P

And a video of him just for fun:P

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EUH0m9niSE

OOO and the reason he moves so weird in the video..He had EPM and he is slowly building up muscle in his hind end. Trust me, if you saw him about 6 months ago, you would realize just how awesome he is now!!

Anyways for those of you who have done rodeo queen stuff, what all do you have to do? One of my friends was the Rodeo queen last year, and I tried to ask her, but she isn't all that great sometimes at explaining things like that. So yeah..lol grrr can you just tell me every tiny little detail on what I need to know? My mind is kinda blank on what I need to ask XD

  • Horse trailer issues?

So my gelding recently got over EPM, if you don't know what it is then you should probably find out cuz it sucks!!

ANYWAYS lol his balance is still rather wacked up and I haven't been able to take him away from my house since I got him over a year ago, WHICH SUCKS. I have been working with him and I plan on working with him more as soon as the weather clears up. I have an old straight load stock combo steel trailer and it deffinatly isn't the smoothest ride, and he is probably scared that he is going to fall over (first time he rode in our trailer was veryt traumatic for him saddly and he was screaming and bucking in place, poor baby). I don't so much need tips on how to get him in, cuz he will now, just not stay in, and I have 2 trainers to go to so yeah. What I would MUCH RATHER know is what kind of trailer is best for a horse with balance issues? I have allways perfered a straight load over a slant since it is much more natural for a horse to brace with its front and back legs instead of one side of their body like they would in a slant, just my opinion:P but I wouldn't mind having one. I'm thinking about buying a two horse, but I KNOW he would not get into that. Also my truck can pull bumper pull and gooseneck trailers.

  • Your veiws on horse slaugter?

Quite frankly, if there was a way to decrease the horse population WITHOUT slaughter, I would totally go for it. I hate the idea of slaughter, but I would much rather see that happen then see horses rotting away in fields without care, horses running loose on streets, horses just dieing left and right. Really, in my opinion, all horse lovers are pro-slaughter, even if they hate the thought of it and want to shoot the people who do it (like me).

What are your thoughts on it?

  • Questions about sheath cleaning and cutting horses?

Ok so I was wondering, what are the signs that a gelding needs his sheath cleaned?

And I am thinking about working with my ferrier..I clean his stalls to work off a saddle that he has for sale. Only problem is, it's a cutting saddle, and I don't really do that. However, I have a yearling colt and a lot of his brothers and sisters have done cutting. Would it be worth it to get the saddle? Does he have good enough confo for cutting (please understand he isn't that buff right now becuase his mom didn't let him nurse as much as she should)?
