So I'm involved in publishing some books which make a small amount each month and is then split between me (the publisher) and the author. I pay her royalties every month, and have been advised to treat the arrangement as if she is an independent contractor.

She recently submitted a W-9 per my request but claims she cannot get it to sign and scan correctly but "gives me permission to sign it for her." Can I sign this with her permission? Do I actually need to submit the W-9 at all or just the 1099?

I'm a freelancer that works in publishing. After a couple years at this, I've finally started to expand a bit and brought in a new author to work with me. My intention is to pay her royalties every month.

My concern is how to handle taxes. She'll definitely make more than $600 by the end of the year, so I'm assuming I need to send a 1099-MISC. In order to do this, do I need a W-9 form? And if I do need a W-9 form from her, does this change the way I file taxes as an independent contractor?

What's the best method to file a 1099 for this contractor?

Not sure why, but the past year has been good in most respects.
