  • By what factor is the rate of a reaction changed if an enzyme lowers the activation energy by 5 kJ/mol at 37°?

Enzymes in human liver catalyze a large number of reactions that degrade ingested toxic chemicals. By what factor is the rate of a detoxification reaction changed if a liver enzyme lowers the activation energy by 5 kJ/mol at 37°C (310.15K)?

I'm not sure what equation to use here or how to find the answer.

  • Can you identify this book?

I'm looking for a book I used to have when I was little. It was green and oversized (don't remember exactly how big it was because it was years ago, but it was probably almost as big as I was - but I could be misremembering that). It was about woodland creatures. I distinctly remember gnomes and giants. It was a collection of stories that kind of all fit together but were still separate. I think there was one about dental work on the giant or something. It was intricately illustrated, with tons of tiny details (again, though, I was little). Any tips you can give me would be much appreciated!

  • Encyclopedia of Alien Species in Larry Niven's Known Space Series?

I was at a library several years ago and I remember paging through a book that had sketches and information on the different aliens from Larry Niven's Known Space series. I distinctly recall line-drawings of Pierson's Puppeteers and Kzinti and Trinocs at least. I think it also included Ringworld Protectors and such, but I don't remember the exact ones. I've searched high and low by every set of keywords I can think of, and I can't find it to save my life. Do you know the name of the book?

  • Is it possible to substitute some of the wheat flour in cookies for cornflour?

I'm running very low on all-purpose flour but got baking in my head before I realized that. I do have an unopened bag of cornflour that I'd like to get rid of though. Can I replace some of the all-purpose with cornflour?

  • What group of people do you believe is the most intolerant?

Now, I'm not trying to start a fight or troll or anything here, I'm just curious as to people's perceptions of various groups.

Religious groups, races, ethnic group, countries, age groups, what do you think holds the most bearing on how tolerant a person will be of another group?

  • What are some good motivational quotes that are non-religious?

Things that deal with severe depression, hopelessness, lack of opportunity, lost opportunities, change, abuse, sadness, disability and poor health, loneliness, and envy. Basically anything that doesn't rely on a belief in a "god" to make someone feel better. When I did a search I was mostly given "trust God" type spiels, which won't help.

  • How do you overlay a MySpace band page?

Alright, I give up! I can do CSS, HTML, et cetera, but I can't figure this out. I'm trying to overlay my band page (no link, there's literally nothing there, I wipe code that doesn't work) and nothing seems to be working. I want to hide everything and start from scratch. I'm talking about something completely different from what's provided, so I need to hide -everything- on the profile. Also I need to know how to put the music player back in, just where I want it. Any thoughts?

  • What are some ideas for a free way to exercise indoors?

Normally I walk or run for exercise, but in Lake Havasu that's not working so well. Temperatures are high (~125F during the day, ~105F at night); much too high to work out in safely. I have no money for a gym membership, or for buying weights, or anything of the sort. So, any suggestions? (And when I say no money, I literally mean zero dollars and zero cents, so no suggestions of "well it's cheap" or "practically nothing".)

  • How does one learn to appreciate or enjoy classical music?

Stupid question, I'm sure, but I don't know where to start at all. I barely "understand" instrumentals in general (probably would never have listened to them at all if it weren't for Call of Ktulu). Just, where to begin?

  • Does anyone expect quoting Scripture to change anyone's beliefs?

If a person does not believe to begin with in the Bible, then how could one reasonably expect that quoting said Bible at the non-believer should have any chance of changing that person's beliefs?

Circular logic that cannot hold water.

  • Why are disabled people expected to be heroes?

So many times I've been told I'm some sort of hero for getting up and going grocery shopping. I've seen so many disabled people being all but worshiped simply for living. People with Downs syndrome are stereotyped as being uncaring and overly friendly, without true emotions. People in wheelchairs are viewed as heroes simply for living their lives. And it's assumed that I want to be some sort of hero. It's dehumanizing and patronizing.

  • Theists: How do you explain this?

I grew up religious. I and my family prayed without cease for the healing of this broken body. Where are your miracles? It certainly isn't just me.

  • What do people do at open mic nights?

I'm sure this seems a silly question, but having never attended one I'm not entirely sure what they're all about. I know there can be singing involved, but is it only open to people who are singing songs they have written themselves, or do people ever perform songs that have been released by professional artists?

  • What is this "PWD" community I keep hearing about?

And why did I not receive an invitation?

Related, do you think a disabled person will better understand another disabled person when their disabilities are completely unrelated (say, a blind man better understand a paralyzed man) better than a nondisabled person would?

I have just as much trouble explaining my disability to other disabled people (with "static" or unchanging disabilities) as I do explaining it to nondisabled people. Neither seems to be in a particular position to understand. Only those with fluctuating disabilities have easily understood.

  • Why would you refer to nondisabled people as "outsiders"?

I understand that certain people have had negative experiences with nondisabled people, but to extrapolate from that and distrust all nondisabled people is something I find absurd. How do you justify that manner of thinking? I'm disabled myself, and find the prejudices you hold against nondisabled people no better than those you accuse them of having against us!

I've had negative experiences with men. Should I automatically seclude myself from their presence, associating only with women and forming female-only groups from which men are irrationally barred?

  • What's your opinion on so-called "people first" language?

I'll be honest - I absolutely loathe people first language. It sounds, to my ears, exceedingly patronizing and condescending. Now, I can speak only for myself, of course, but I need no semantic protection from other people. I often find myself in disbelief when people take offense at the term "disabled person" or "autistic person". Am I truly alone in this stance?

  • Is it possible for someone with a chronic illness/hidden disability to have a long-term romantic relationship?

A young adult or teenager with myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, etcetera. Something that changes unpredictably and severely. Are there actually people willing to look past that?

  • Is there anybody who could not be diagnosed with some sort of mental disorder?

Isn't it fantastic how quick people are to diagnose people with supposed mental disorders, and to medicate for same? Frightening, isn't it, how quick people are to accept drugs to "normalize" them!
