  • Does anyone know the answer to this one?

I'm just stumped and can't figure it out. What I want to know is: how does Anon feel about men?

  • Christians, please answer a serious and sincere question?

According to your religion, if a man marries a woman thinking her to be a virgin, and then discovers she is not, is it appropriate Christian behavior to go seeking punishment or retribution against her? I thought your religion preaches turning the other cheek and loving your neighbor; surely a spouse who you have vowed to love is deserving of this even more than a stranger. Chastity may be a fine virtue, but did not your savior himself stand up even for prostitutes?

In short, is this man really being a good Christian, or have I entirely misunderstood your religion? Thank you.

  • ATHEISTS: Are there any good *explicitly atheistic* songs?

I've tried searching the net for atheist songs, but what I inevitably get is a grab-bag of things which are only loosely atheistic, or only partly about atheism. I'm not looking for songs mocking Christianity or evangelists or pro science songs or anything that's only vaguely in the ball park. I'm not looking for songs that put down organized religion or traditional views on god but potentially leave room for someone to interpret them as still leaving room for belief in a god. I'm not looking for songs which talk to god directly in a critical way, because, no matter how critical, it's still talking to god and therefore implying there's a god to talk to. I want songs which expressly proclaim that there is no god, and don't leave any room for anyone to interpret them in any other way. And "Imagine" doesn't cut it, because it's only partly on track, it loses me when it goes off into communism ("Imagine no possessions..."). I don't want a melange of ideas which includes atheism, I want a song about atheism, period.

Perhaps if I provide some context, you'll see what I'm looking for: I attend a regular jam session where one of the guys occasionally likes to drag out some gospel songs. Right now my reaction is to politely refuse to participate. But I would prefer to be able to answer these "praise god" songs with something that, politely but firmly, expressly and unambiguously says "No, there is no god."

  • A Probability Question?

If one deals 10 cards from a double-deck of cards (two decks of standard playing cards, so 104 cards), what are the odds that five of them will be of the same rank? That is, what are the odds that you'll get, for instance, five sevens?

This is not a homework problem, I simply had a solitaire game deal me this, and found that I couldn't figure out how to calculate the odds.

  • Harpists: How good was Harpo Marx?

A recent question about harps inspired me to ask something I've always wondered about. How good of a harpist was Harpo Marx? I don't play harp, so it's hard for me to judge.

Here's a link to him playing two numbers-- one for laughs, and one more serious:

There are, of course, a number other links to him playing on youtube.

  • Appeal the question: I want a better answer on what qualifies as "classical"?

A recently resolved question (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ak8az... asks us to potentially consider Yiruma's "River Flows Into You" as classical music, and the consensus was that it does not qualify. And actually, I don't disagree. But I'm not entirely persuaded by the arguments given about style, complexity and musical language, and I'm not clear in my own mind what arguments I would use myself.

Crass and simplistic in the extreme? Well, "crass" is a judgement call, but as far as simplistic in the extreme-- how is it any different than, say, Philip Glass? Yet we're willing to call minimalism pieces "classical". Style, complexity, musical language? Surely the Yiruma piece beats Cage's 4'33 hand's down in any of those categories. Yet people consider 4'33 to be "classical music" (let alone "music" :-S).

    In short, why is this

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhN7SG-H-3k

    not classical, but this

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imbwn6iVryQ

is? Would someone from planet Mars who knew nothing about Earth musical culture or history discern any fundamental difference? I'm not sure I see the difference, if someone can point it out I'll learn something. Thanks!

  • Question about cello fingering.?

A recent answer by Switch including the following link:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wor0g_JfycE

I am not a cellist, but I do play a little violin, and I was surprised by the fingering that this gentleman demonstrates. My question: when he uses the 3rd "extended" position (why is it called "extended"?), he plays the B with his fourth finger. I would have expected the third finger there. He is, after all, walking up the string playing consecutive notes: G is played with 1, A is played with 2, so I expected B with 3. But he uses 4. He's a teacher, so I assume he is correct. My question is: why is this correct?

  • What's the perfect CD of the "Moonlight" sonata, with killer 3rd mvmt: faithful, rhythmic, without schmaltz?

I have a couple recordings I'm dissatisfied with the last movement, where the performers do a lot of schmaltzy speeding up and slowing down. I don't want that, I want something that keeps the rhythm, that's faithful to the original score without a lot of "interpretation", but that has a lot of fire and energy. I found a youtube of Murray Perahia ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0oUefWW4HY ) that I thought was excellent, but when I went to amazon, I couldn't find an actual CD for sale of him playing that piece.

So can someone recommend an album with a performance that fits my specifications? I'm old fashioned, I want to buy a CD.

  • Has anyone ever learned anything here?

Yahoo Answers is a useful place where people can find answers to things they really want to know. I'm new to the Religion and Spirituality section, but it seems that this does not apply here. All the questions seem to be about one side just baiting the other. Some are interesting discussion topics, but this isn't a discussion forum, there's no good way to have a real dialogue and reply to what people say.

So what I'm asking here: Has anyone ever asked a question here in Religion and Spirituality where they really wanted to learn something, and actually gotten a factual answer that told them what they previously didn't know?

  • Does rosin go bad? After a century, for instance?

When my grandfather gave me his violin from his childhood, it included some rosin. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that rosin is literally a century old at this point. There still seems to be lots of it. It always seemed ok until I recently had the bow rehaired, and now I'm having a tough time getting enough rosin on the bow. Do I need to replace the rosin, or is this normally for a freshly rehaired bow?
