  • diff in Mac OS Terminal?

I want to know if I have the same exact folders, subfolders and files in two different directories.

I read somewhere that the diff -rq command will give me results in what files and folders are absent or different between two directories.

So I ran the command and I get different files, mostly .Something hidden files. No biggie. but when I Get Info the two directories, I get a difference of 3GB and around a thousand files difference. I run diff -rq on subfolders and I find that some of them still have differences.

Is there anything more stringent than diff -rq or am I doing something wrong?

  • Vox Pathfinder 10 reviews?

I've heard that the Vox Pathfinder 10 is a great practice amp that has a sound in between a solid state and a tube amp. Basically I've read and heard it's good.

However, looking at the specs, it's got a 6.5 inch speaker and just 10 watts of solid state power, so I'm not sure exactly how that figures out for a really affordable amp, while something like the ZT Lunchbox which has the same sized speaker takes so much tech and it costs much more.

I'm just curious as to whether it's worth my money. It's cheap around here ($47 or less) and I'm looking for a nice small practice amp that doesn't sound like really crappy amps that can be had for the same price (like Fender and Marshall).

  • Would an i5 Mac mini run Starcraft II?

I did look at the back and it seems to me that only the top tier Macs can run the game. I think that's kinda unfair though.

I don't need the data back, but I'd like to know if I can still use that drive if there was a way to repair it.

  • What's a good, filling, breakfast that needs little or no prep?

My sister suggests bananas and two boiled eggs.

I'm looking for similar options. Stuff that only need to be boiled or heated at most and will not need much more than a sandwich bag or a brown bag for transport.

This is obviously gonna be most likely filled with veggie and fruit suggestions, but that would be great! I just don't wanna get stuck with the same thing everyday.

Sauces are alright, certain processed foods are alright as well, such as raisins (they're pretty much just dried grapes), or canned tuna in light brine. But the goal is kinda to just have a breakfast I can practically eat with just my hands.

  • Since when did small remote-controlled flying objects become generally called "drones"?

Back in 2009 or 2010, we'd still call them quadcopters (if they had four rotors) or generally RC (remote controlled) helicopters. We did attach cameras and other stuff to them before they came with camera mounts or had them built in.

At the same time, when you spoke of a drone that is a vehicle, it would be the UAV the US military uses, and not small RC flying cameras.

So my question again is when did RC copters get called drones, like the war machines?

  • How do you know if you already sanded off all the clear coat?

I have a cheap guitar I'd like to refinish just for fun, and it has a clear coat finish.

Which is great, coz I can opt to just sand it, which is what I'm doing now.

However, since it's clear coat, I find it pretty hard to determine if I already reached the bare wood, or if there's still the slightest amount of finish still on it.

I'll be staining the wood so I need to make sure that I leave absolutely no clear coat.

  • What's a good value camcorder (hopefully nothing near $1000) that has selective focus?

My Canon 550D does it well when I need my shallow DOF for video, but my subject can't move or I will have to follow the focus manually and I can't really do that well unless I buy the whole follow-focus rig and that's just gonna be worth it on a 550D.

If it helps, I'll be using it for shooting tutorials, music videos, gigs, and I aim to have nice shallow DOF or at the very least be able to select which part of the frame gets focus.

All the camcorders I ever used (way back til 1997 to 2005) were all autofocus and were sharp to infinity (ugh)

  • What's a good absolute beginner bow?

    For archery.

And yes, cash is an issue.

I just want something to practice with, coz archery ranges around here cost $20 an hour and I can't afford that even if it comes with free instruction. I'd rather just buy one I can work with for a while before I step up to better gear, and hire an archery teacher.

I also don't intend to use a compound bow in the future (those are the complicated looking ones right?). I like them bow-looking, and I don't intend to compete or hunt.

I am an absolute beginner too, and I still don't know if I will keep my interest in archery, so a decent beginner bow would be good for me. I don't like the idea of wasting my money on a nice bow I couldn't draw and won't use so often.

Any tips on making a backyard target range would be great too!

  • Solder on tone pots take forever to melt?

I am going to refinish my Les Paul copy guitar, and I took apart the electronics.

One thing that I noticed is that the solder that binds the wiring to the back of the tone pots take forever to melt, and it makes the whole pot assembly heat up before the solder actually melts at which point can I only take the wire off.

I understand that it happens because of physics (the pot is a giant metal conductor and draws heat from the solder preventing it from reaching the melting point until the whole shebang does), but I also read somewhere that heating up your pot can damage it, so I am afraid that I might have already damaged them.

I use a 30w soldering iron with a pointed tip. Should I change my soldering kit? Is there a technique I failed to do?

  • Will changing from US iTunes Store (no credit card) to another country's iTunes Store force me to input a credit card?

I am currently on the US iTunes store without any payment method (no credit card; selected as "none" when first set up). If I switch to another country's iTunes store, will it force me to input a credit card number?

I need to download an app that is not available in the US iTunes Store, but I also don't have a credit card.

  • My newly-bought guitar has a dead 14th fret on the high e string ONLY. What fix should I do/avail?

As stated, the EADGB strings are fine on the 14th fret, very open, not buzzing even. Also, the intonation is already spot on, so I think a truss rod adjustment may alleviate the problem, but throw off the intonation. Fret leveling sounds pretty harsh if only one fret and one string is affected. Maybe the frets aren't hammered in evenly? Please help!

  • Is "Also Sprach Zarathustra" in Public Domain?

I hear the tune everywhere, jazz bands do it, rock bands interpolate it, even Phish has a whole jam based on it. According to Wikipedia it was published in 1896, which means the composition is in Public Domain. However, i think people still hold rights to these pieces. Also, orchestras publish their performances of the piece.

So is it in the Public Domain that you can perform record and sell a song containing the piece in part or in full without owing anyone, Strauss, his family, the holders of the rights to the piece and/or the orchestras who published their performance of the work? Or is it in Public Domain that the sheet music is free to obtain and republish but in performance and selling of recordings you owe some amount to someone?

I'm really curious because I don't want to interpolate or make a jam of it in a record and sell it knowing it's in public domain, only to find out I actually owe someone.

I heard people pay royalties for the happy birthday song - true or not, i don't want to pay anyone for something I know is public domain.

  • I had a sudden dizziness without moving, what could it be?

Just a while ago, i was just sitting in front of this computer when i suddenly felt dizzy, like everything was spinning.

More specifically, the left side of my head (the part a baseball cap would cover) felt weird, i felt like i was fainting and falling towards my left (i think).

I did not feel nauseous or hungry (i just ate supper), nor did i move quickly or spin my head. I was just typing at the computer screen then it just happened.

I stood up and jumped to try to shake it off and it went away in a while, probably within a minute, but i cant be sure.

Any suggestions on what might have caused it? I will go to the doctor to have this checked.

  • Tone difference between Flying V and Les Paul?

the Les Paul has two tone knobs, two volume knobs, a three way switch, and Burstbucker Pickups.

the Flying V has two volume knobs, one tone knob, a three way switch, and ceramic humbuckers.

    1. What's the tone difference between Burstbuckers and ceramics?

    2. What do the volume knobs do (specially the second one) and what do the tone knobs do (two, vs only one).

    3. Any difference between the three way switch in the les paul and V?

    4. What is the overall tone for each of the guitars?

    5. Is the V capable of playing less-steely lows like that of the acoustic guitar (so far, ive heard only Les Pauls being able to do that, my strat is incapable of doing the same thing).?

    6. Will replacing the ceramic humbuckers of the V with the humbuckers from the Les Paul make the Flying V warmer in tone (eg, more Les Paul-like) ?

A very thorough answer is appreciated. nothing like "Les paul rules! blahblah!" only losers do that.

Words from luthiers are very welcome : )
