College Admissions question?
Hello all,
I have a friend in New York who's in a bit of a dilemma. She failed the second semester of his high school classes as a junior due to an illness which caused her to miss most of the semester. Unfortunately the school didn't legitimize her illness and because of this, she has straight Fs on her second semester junior year report card and many unexcused absences. She's recently changed schools and is repeating the 11th grade this year. Needless to say, she's really worried about how this will effect her chances at college admissions; she's a really bright student and has taken straight Honors/APs her entire school career. This year she's enrolled in like 7 AP classes, is an editor for her school newspaper, and has entered a whole bunch of writing competitions and gone to college internships etc.
My intuition's telling me that she should have no trouble, but I wanted to hear some advice from a more experienced academic. I'm sure she'll be able to get doctors notes/etc validating her absences if she needs to. Keep in mind she's looking at top colleges such as the ivy leagues, Stanford, UC Berkeley, U Chicago, etc. She's really talented; hopefully the system won't keep her down
Thanks for your help

1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)1 decade agoHigh School Transcripts question?
One of my friends failed last semester of his junior yr in high school in new york and failed literally all of the classes he was taking due to illnesses which caused him to miss over half of second semester. The school refused to excuse his absences and they're counting him as truant for several months, which is to say they aren't being very helpful. His most viable option at this point is to retake junior year at a different school or possibly from a home/online school since he might have to miss more school due to illness in the future. When he applies to colleges will this affect him?

Seriously! How freaking awesome is science. I read 150 pages of a quantum physics book today, watched half a term of introductory electromagnetism on MIT open courseware, and spent 2 hrs on nasa.gov.
So my question is, how ******* awesome is science?
3 AnswersOther - Education1 decade agoHow can I find some good volunteer opportunities in my area?
Hello,
I'm a high school student about to go into Junior year at an online high school (I'm home schooled as of this year) and I live in Ventura County. I'm looking for information regarding any websites or organizations you know of that provide volunteer opportunities for my area.
I'm also interested in research opportunities but I'm not sure how to find professors/programs where I can conduct academic research.
And as an extra bonus I'm interested in entering science fairs, science, math and writing competitions and other such academic competitions and activities such as the AMC 12 or other programs which are both interesting and will help me stand out for college admissions.
Thank you!

4 AnswersComics & Animation1 decade agoAdvice on Junior year schedule?
Hello,
I'm in the process of choosing my courses for 11th grade. I live in the U.S. and attend Keystone National High School (an online high school) and plan on taking most of my math and science courses through EPGY online.
Thus far, these are the classes I have chosen:
AP World History
AP Physics C
AP English Language
CP French III
AP Art History
AP Economics
AP Calculus BC
In addition to these courses I was planning on taking either AP Psychology, AP Computer Science A, or AP Statistics.
So my question is this- which of the above three courses would be most meaningful for me to take? Meaning from which course would I get the most out of?
I've chosen all of my courses based on my political interest and academic passions and I never choose classes based on what looks good for college. My primary concern at this point is getting the most out of Junior year intellectually. Advice/opinions about any other courses I have taken would also be appreciated
Thanks

4 AnswersPsychology1 decade agoHow do I enter a science fair?
I'm entering 11th next year and I'll be taking AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C, among other AP Classes. I'm really interested in science and I was doing some preliminary research into entering science fairs/other science and math related competitions. I live in southern California if that helps. I've never done any science project type thing out of school but I know that I could design some cool projects if I was just given some direction and knowledge about where I can sign up for science fairs and how they work/what skills I need to make good entries.
Thanks!
4 AnswersBotany1 decade agoCan I ask my high school to erase one year of my transcripts?
I'm currently ending my junior year in high school, and I've been taking full AP classes for junior year and full honors/aps for sophomore year. First semester of junior year i finished with As and Bs, but this year I'm failing my classes because of operations and such that have caused me to get behind.
Right now I'm considering trying to get the school to erase junior year from my transcripts so that I can just take a full AP schedule using online AP courses next year and treat that as my junior year. Do you think the high school will allow this? They've been pretty bitchy so far; they wouldnt recognize the legitimacy of my operation and I have about 60 truants this semester (ive been gone since march). Still I think it should be possible for them to simply erase my junior year records completely and just keep freshman/sophomore year. I want to get into a good school like Berkeley or MIT, so I really can't have a semester full of undeserved Fs on my permanent record. urgh.
If it helps any my primary source for online AP classes will be keystone school
my plan is to treat next year as my junior year in which I take the full online AP schedule and sorta pretend that this year was a year for operations/or that I decided to take off a year, which some students do. Any advice would be much appreciated
