  • Why are actual lumber sizes not in round numbers?

Why are what we call two-by-fours actually 1 1/2" by 3 5/8", and two-by-threes really 1 1/2" by 2 1/2"? Why aren't they the actual, round numbers, which are so much easier to deal with?

  • Solution for condensation inside rooftop vents?

How can we prevent condensation from building up in rooftop vents? We have a situation where the hot humid air from the bathroom fans would hit the cold rooftop duct, condense, and drip back down.

We tried goose neck vents, and that helps a bit since half the condensation would drip outwards, but still there is 2’ length of cold duct work collecting moisture before the steam hits the turns. We can’t cut the goose neck down below 2’ or the snow drift would block the airflow.

    Thanks.

  • Recommend wrist brace for recreational football?

I play in a very competitive full contact flag football league, where most of the players are ex-college or at least ex-high school players.

I tore a ligament in my wrist last April, and had arthroscopic surgery last July. It’s a type of injury that will never recover fully. I have 75% compressive strength, but no rotational strength. Meaning, I could still bench press 275, but I can’t twist open a soda bottle.

I was given clearance to begin light lifting back in January, and light sports recently. I mentioned football to my doctor, who just laughed in my face (but not a explicit “no”).

The surgeon said he “highly recommends” that I do not play football, but if I’m dumb enough to do it, to wear a heavy stabilizing brace. But he refuses to recommend a brand or model, for liability reasons (since it would be condoning me playing, and he doesn’t want to get sued).

Now, I AM dumb enough to do it, as peer pressure and love of the game is drawing me back to the field. I’m looking for recommendations on braces that’s stiff enough to not let my wrist bend, yet allow enough movement to I don’t break my fingers (I don’t want to land on my knuckles). I have the same condition as Dallas Clark, and would just wear what he’s going to wear IF we have the NFL 2011 season, but that’s months away.

Note that I am a OLinemen/DE, so I don’t need to catch the ball, but do need to push people around.

    Thanks!

  • What is the payment schedule for players' salaries?

How are the players' contracted salaries paid out, in regards to the calender?

Say a player's base salary is $1.2 million (please do NOT factor in bonuses).

Do they get $50,000 on the 1st and 15th of each month?

Do they get $75,000 per game for 16 games?

Or is there a set schedule of payment, like X% for training camp, Y% for preseason, Z% for the regular season?

  • Are the "New" Vegas blackjack games encouraging card counting?

I just got back from a weekend in Vegas, and apparently the recession is hitting the gaming business hard. In the non-elite casinos, 3/4 of the tables are closed, and even the elite casinos can't fill all the tables.

I guess to compete for players, the smaller casinos have gimmick games galore. Apparently you could gamble on War and Solitaire. But what I don't get are the single deck and two deck blackjack games.

By advertising these low-deck games, are the casinos condoning or even encouraging card counting? Seriously, with just 1 deck, how can you NOT count cards? Even by accident, when you see a bunch of low cards being dealt, you KNOW that the deck is getting heavy.

I've heard that casinos don't really mind straight counting with the standard 6 deck shoes, since most counters can't do it right and end up losing more money due to their overconfidence. But with 1 or 2 decks, you could easily know exactly how many high and low cards are left in the shoe. So by pushing these type of games, have the casinos changed their stances against counting?

  • Lost Social Security Number?

I can't find my 1 year old's social security card, and he can't remember his number either. Tax time is coming up, and I don't want to miss out on his deductions!

How can I get his SSN without waiting weeks or months?

  • Why is it okay for Obama to make fun of handicapped people?

So the media gives Obama a pass for equating his poor bowling skills to "it's like the special olympics or something."

Why is it that he's off the hook with a simple private apology to the head of the special olympics, while Imus gets hammered for the "nappy headed hoes" comment, even while apologizing to the entire world?

  • Do I really need to worry about high triglyceride levels?

I just had a physical, and my triglyceride came back as 233. My doc said I need to watch my diet, etc. etc., but avoided my question of WHY high triglyceride level is bad.

I'm 29 years old, 5'10", 215 lbs, with 17% body fat. My cholestrol is 166, with the good cholestrol ratio of 3.8. I hit the gym 3 times a week, 2 hour workouts, plus play 1.5 hours of football every Sunday.

I did some reading online, and though all sources say high levels are bad, they all seem to disagree on WHY it's bad. They all say "might" cause this and that, but none could cite and any definitive corrilations to various diseases nor studies.

Due to my lifestyle, I'm often a food and water "camel." 2-3 times a week I'm too busy to have a timely lunch, and end up merging lunch and dinner. I'm wondering if it's my body's way of storing excess energy in case I have to skip meals?

  • Shaving leg for sports?

I have a bad habit of getting kicked in my shin and calf with cleats, and I'm sick of getting blood and band-aids stuck to my leg hair.

Is it gay to shave my legs? A few guys I play football with do shave their legs, but they also shave their chest hair (which I think is gay).

Keep in mind, this is purely functional.

  • NSAIDs after weightlifting?

Due to various joint injuries, I am taking the prescription NSAID Relafen (sp) "as necessary." I typically take one after my evening workouts, and it works wonders for my joint pains.

However, I was wondering if taking NSAIDs after a workout would undo the progress from the workout. Considering that it's a muscle relaxer, would it nullify the efforts of my strength training?

Note: I can only take the NSAID before bed, because it makes me sleepy and loopy.

  • What is the significance of "zone blocking"?

I know zone blocking is the run version of cup protection for pass, but what sets it apart? As in, opposed to what other technique?

From all descriptions of the system, it seems like it's the ONLY way to block. Or maybe because that's the only thing I'd been taught in HS, so I think that's the norm? But from what sports writers say, onlyt a handful of teams use zone blocking.
