  • Is there a way to test a motherboard in a dead laptop to see if it still works?

I would love to diagnose the fault(s) on my laptop, but I dont know where to start. I'm pretty sure the hard drive is ok, but after my ex took the laptop to bits and reassembled it, it now refuses even to power up. Ive tried changing the battery and the charger, Ive checked all the cables and ribbons are attached. Any other suggestions? Im tempted to try a new power jack, then a motherboard, but it's so expensive, Id rather rule everything else out first if possible. I dont wanna throw good money after bad.

  • Possible causes of tumble dryer running cool?

I have a condenser dryer which tumbles but only coolly. I may be wrong but it seems to have happened gradually rather than suddenly.

Anyway, I'm guessing the heating element needs replacing, but is there anything else it could be, before I go ahead and buy one?

I will try to fit it myself.

  • Now that YouTube is no longer any use to UK music fans...?

Does anyone know of any other sites that host modern music videos where we can watch our favourite singers?

  • Can you help me find this YouTube video?

It's a guy sitting on a bed miming to a funny song. Halfway through another guy pops up in front of him and joins in. I can't remember their names or the song. I know it's a shot in the dark, but does anyone recognize the one I mean? I'm sure it was a featured video on youtube, but I can't find it now.

  • Legal advice need - student refused access to college?

My son is attending a college course daily. He has a pass to get through the automatic barriers, but occasionally has forgotten or misplaced it. If he does not have it, he is charged a pound for a temporary day pass.

If he refuses to pay, he is refused entry.

If he misses a day, he loses his week's adult learning grant.

    Can this be legal?

  • finding out you have HIV after how long?

A friend of mine is very concerned. He slept with someone five or six years ago, over a period of two months or so, and has recently learned that person has just died of AIDS. I have tried to reassure him that he would have possibly had symptoms himself by now, but he says it can take years to appear. I have tried to look on the internet for him for information to reassure him, but can't really find anything helpful. He plans to go get tested, but in the meantime I'd like to be able to reassure him if possible with the experiences of others.

I suppose what I'm asking is do you know of anyone who has been diagnosed many years later? If so, how long can someone have the virus before realising they have it? Thank you.

  • Advice needed about internet sharing?

The scenario is this: 1 internet hub, 2 signal boosters (1 upstairs, 1 down), 4 computers (3 wireless, 1 ethernet, all in different rooms).

    2 possible solutions:

1.Each connects independently to the internet through the hub, or

    2. They all share a network via a 'host' computer

    My questions are

    a. Which would you recommend for the purpose of speed, connectivity and performance (file sharing is not an issue, just internet access)?

    b. If the 'host' computer goes down, would that mean the others would be unable to connect to the internet?

    Many thanks, in advance.

  • Plumbing advice needed - removing a radiator?

I'm about to take a radiator off the wall to wallpaper behind it. It has new pipework, with isolation valves each end, which I will switch off. I have two questions:

There is a tap at the exit end of the radiator which i assume is a drainage tap, but I can't see it properly as it points downwards. Will this take a regular radiator bleed key? It just feels like a circle to me.

When I undo the valve nuts on the radiator, am I likely to need to insert new olives? I'm not sure if there are any already in there.

I don't want to start on it without having the appropriate tools and fittings.

    Thank you, in advance

  • Have you ever caught yourself actually saying 'LOL'?

I caught myself saying it today.

I really must get out more

Or start using the telephone instead of online chatting and texting

  • Would you let your new partner see your Y/A questions and answers?

    Or would you be embarrassed?

Would they tell your partner more about you than you'd want them to know right away?

  • Do you know of a cure for lovesickness?

Ok, I'm an adult, divorced a long time and have dated many times. But I've become very attached to a particular man. There's absolutely nothing I don't like about him. We spend quite a lot of time together and are very close in many respects. He's resisting getting too close though, and is either playing games with me or genuinely likes being with me, as he tries to get me to spend time with him frequently. I'm a bit hesitant to do this as I know I'm falling for him big style and I don't wanna say something stupid like 'i love you' before he feels the same way. He does know this, which is why I wonder about the games bit. I understand he might want to take his time, so I'm trying really hard to be 'cool', but my heart aches for him so much. It kills me to say no to going round there every time but I just know I have to at the moment. I'm prepared to deal with waiting for him, but can you suggest anything to help ease the ache in the meantime? It's so bad I can't even motivate myself to go out and distract myself with other activities at the moment even though I know that would help.

  • You rich people - do you realize how offensive we poor people find your waste of money?

I have acquaintances who buy tickets to shows then don't bother going, they throw out perfectly good designer clothes just because they are tired of them, don't bother to pick up small change if it falls out of their pockets etc. I am on such a tight budget I scour the pavements for small change, recycle clothes, switch off lights wherever possible, feed my dog only on leftovers and basically fight to conserve every penny. I even wrap myself in a duvet every day as I have no carpets and can't afford to heat my home. I can't help but be offended by those with money who choose to throw it away. How do you feel?

  • Can you answer an adult question with adult content and NOT get reported for violating community guidelines?

I have noticed some adult questions on here that require sometimes explicit answers. Some answers get reported for violating community guidelines and yet more explicit ones do not. It seems to me that some communities in the world may be more sensitive than others, just as laws are different in some parts of the world. I'm beginning to think there should be an option for Y/A to be country-specific, partly to avoid inadvertently offending particularly sensitive communities, and partly so more liberal communities can get the answers they need without having them removed. What do you think?

  • Any suggestions for getting rid of black mould off the ceiling of an unheated room?

and preventing it coming back. I don't want to waste electricity by putting a heater in there. There is adequate ventilation but it has concrete floor and bare brick walls. I'm assuming it is caused by damp from my condenser dryer but I've nowhere else to put it.

  • Don't you think it would be fair, as we the taxpayer are propping up our banks...?

to each be given shares in those banks. At least then we have something in return for our investment and we might be less outraged about having no choice in the matter.

    What do you think?
