  • My Rights as a Part Time employee in Mississippi.?

I have just graduated from high school and now hold my first job ever at Waldenbooks as a bookseller/cashier. I have been working there for two weeks now but I fear I may get fired and I want to know my rights; here is the entire story.

Week one: My local bookstore hires new employees because the previous employee was fired for calling in sick too many times. Me and two other people whom I do not know are hired for this position part time. One person has work experience at Starbucks and is hired (I am not sure if an interview is conducted), the second person was referenced to the manager from his commanding officer in the Marines and is hired without an interview (the commanding officer and manager are friends), I go through the regular application process and did really well on the interview (my manager said I did well). We are all hired and we begin working.

Week one (continued): I am given 12 hours total the first week. I work 4 hours a day for three days. The other two people are given similar hours that vary by either 1-2+/- hours. I believe I do really well this week as I begin to catch on quickly. The assistant manager compliments my professionalism and tries to get me to loosen up, and says several times that I am doing fine and pats me on the back (literally)

Week two: I fully understand my job now, I can handle all forms of currency (cash, credit, check, debit, gift card) quickly and well at the register. I can take orders over the phone. And I can also direct customers towards the books they want in 1-5 minutes, I also have extensive knowledge about many books and have successfully sold more books with this knowledge.

This is where my fear sets in: When I went to check my work schedule for the next week at the end of my last shift for the second week I am scheduled for 4 hours on Wednesday only. The two other employees both have 8 hours. As I walk out of the staffroom I wave goodbye to my manager and assistant manager and as soon as I do they stop whispering to each other and give me a blank stare for half a second and say farewell until next week.

The facts: I am single and still live with my parents since I just graduated.

I tell my employer when I got hired that I want this job so I can afford a laptop for college (I am not sure of the other new employees motives).

My race is asian and the other two are white (one male one female)

Immediately next to the clock-in sheet is a clock that I use as a reference to measure my punctuality. I am always early according to this clock, between 1-5 minutes. On the last day of my second week I find out that there is another clock that serves as the official clock for the store which runs 3 minutes quicker than the clock I have been using, I am lectured that same day that I am two minutes late. I have never been told which clock to use until this last day; to my knowledge even with the 3 minute addon to my previous clock-ins I am always on time. (This is the same day I find out I have 4 hours next week and my manager and asst manager give me the blank stare).

Minor points to make: I always walk into my job with a large cup of tea from chick filet which I get before my shift. I have a bad habit of leaving my cup behind after my shift, but I always walk back to the store in under 3 min to throw it away.

I am required to wear a name tag which I leave in my locker in the staffroom, when I walk into the sales floor I sometimes forget to wear it and dont realize it until another employee or manager tells me. I quickly grab my nametag and resume working (under 20 seconds).

I have never been given an employee review. I have not been given an criticism the second week.

This is my question. I believe I much more qualified to be a bookseller at Waldenbooks than the marine fellow, I love books and have read hundreds of them ranging in nearly every subject, during the first day the marine fellow says, "I never though I would be working at a bookstore" and he also hinted at the fact that he dislikes reading.

What are my rights? Can my employer fire me, even though I am more qualified, because he believes another employer deserves more hours (maybe for rent). If he does fire me without giving me a review while I am performing an excellect job (I believe), what actions can I take?

I am desperate please help me. I want to know my rights and I plan on taking legal action if this is truly what it seems to be.

  • The Federal Reserve and the Treasury ?Huh?

I have been racking my brain on this issue for quiet some time and I have yet to find a credible conclusion. What is the relationship, in its entirety, between the Federal Reserve and Treasury. So far this is how I see it:

The U.S. Govt. needs 1 billion dollars for a project, so the U.S. Treasury asks the Federal Reserve for 1 billion dollars of U.S. currency in exchange for 1 billion dollars worth of U.S. bonds. The Federal Reserve prints 1 billion dollars of U.S. currency and trades it for 1 billion dollars of U.S. bonds- and these bonds carry interest.

If money is only created when the U.S. Treasury requests it from the Federal Reserve; and whenever the Federal Reserve creates money, immediate interest is thrown on top of that money- than where does the money come from to pay for THAT interest.

If the U.S. can only get money from the Federal Reserve, and borrows 1 billion dollars from it, naturally the Federal Reserve is going to want more than 1 billion dollars in return (it is a loan after all). Where does the money come from? More debt increasing loans?

So far according to current U.S. law, whatever profits the Federal Reserve earns from its practices, interest, must be ultimately returned to U.S. Treasury- ultimately negating the mathematical paradox of something from nothing since everything will return to equilibrium eventually. However (this is where my question lies), once the U.S. Treasury gets back its interest from the Federal Reserve, where does the money go?!

Let's say the U.S. Treasury requests that largest loan ever, 100 gazillion dollars, and the Federal Reserve gives us 100 gazillion but asks that we repay them 200 gazillion dollars. When all is said is done and we magically repay the Federal Reserve 200 gazillion dollars; eventually the Federal Reserve must give the U.S. Treasury all its profits, I.E. the 100 gazillion dollar profit. Ultimately the laws of sanity work itself out as the money supply resumes equilibrium.... however.... what does the U.S. Treasury now do with 100 gazillion dollars? If this were the case than why have the Federal Reserve in the first place since the U.S. Treasury will now from hence forth have all the money it will ever want?

  • Does a government have to have consent from the governed to be considered a government.?

It's more of a philosophical question.

"The sovereignty of nations must be respected, but nations derive their sovereignty- their legitimacy- from the consent of the governed." This was a quote from U.S. Senator Jesse Helms when he addressed the U.N. Security Council in 2000.

My question is this, should this standard be held for all countries in the world. For a government to have the right of sovereignty on the international stage must that government have at least some consent from the governed.

Please don't mention Capitalism vs. Socialism/Communism, I would like this question to be strictly humanitarian and nonpartisan. Thanks for the help.

  • United Nations Efforts in Preventing Crimes Against Humanity?

I am researching crimes against humanity (as defined by the United Nations), and I was wondering what are ALL (or at least most of) the protocols the U.N. has established in an effort to prevent crimes against humanity (such as the Geneva Accords).

I need to be able to cite these resolutions so if you post an answer please cite where you got that information.

(Also is there an official U.N. website where I can sift through all the resolutions to find what I'm looking for, preferably with a search engine)

  • Is it morally permissible to kill one innocent person to save the lives of more innocent people?

I'm trying to gather credible resources (such as books, articles, or on-line resources), explaining both sides of this issue. Logically you must kill one innocent person to save more innocent people, however who is trustworthy enough to choose who dies and how can you simply dismiss human compassion for logic.

The reason I'm asking is because my speech teacher in high school really wants me to join the debate team, however I have never debated but have good speaking skills. This is next month's topic and I really need help on finding credible resources so I don't make a fool of myself.

    Thank you.

  • What are good books or online sources about crimes against humanity and how to solve them?

Hi, I am writing a paper on crimes against humanity. So far I am still gathering all my resources so I can form an objective and educated paper.

My paper must include two instances in modern history where crimes against humanity took place and why. I must also talk about the role of the rest of the world on the issue and how they were effective (or not). Why? And of course I must propose a solution to all the above problems.

It's a pretty fun essay I think, and I look forward to spending many hours creating it. If you could point me to any credible books or online resources that would be fantastic.

So far I have mostly found books about Africa relating to Rwanda and Darfur. I want to avoid decade old crimes against humanity (the holocaust has been belabored to death).

And according to the U.N. crimes against humanity are defined as, "Murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation, and other inhumane acts committed against any civilian population, before or during the war, or persecutions on political, racial or religious grounds in execution of or in connection with any crime within the jurisdiction of the Tribunal, whether or not in violation of the domestic law of the country where perpetrated".[

  • Who was the most courageous leader(s)?

What person or organization do you think showed a great amount of courage in their effort to make the world a better place (I.E. creating positive change on a life/community/ organization/movement/etc.), and why.

So far I got Martin Luther King for obvious reasons, and Ghandi whom I know virtually nothing about.

    Thanks for any replies.

  • I need a quizbowl club guide?

My high school is beginning a quizbowl team, we already have a sponsor, and figuratively speaking we are just going to wing it.

My question is for anyone who has participated in a quizbowl club in either high school or college. I.E. what events or activities do you generally do in a quizbowl and/or how do you go about starting them.

I thought of calling a few colleges and negotiating with them to plan a competition with other similar clubs in the state.

(Just to clarify a quizbowl is like Jeopardy only with partners

Does anyone have any ideas that are suitable for a high school atmosphere that is both enjoyable, somewhat educating, and affordable.

  • How could anyone remotely agree with McCain for president?

I watched McCain campaign trail in N.H. and he absolutely infuriates me with his ideas for being president. He plainly said during his rallies he would stay in Iraq for 100 years and even follow Osama Bin Laden "to the gates of hell and back". This notion is absolutely absurd considering the far more threatening issues in our country. Our econonomy is in a crisis; the US dollar is collapsing and our social security system is about to break our bank. Our borders are as porous as a sponge, how can we possibly defend against "worldwide" terrorism when we cant even defend ourselves. Here is the way I see using the trillion dollars in war money, you can fight a single war for a trillion or you can secure our borders over 50 times for a trillion dollars. I believe that if elected president the only thing he will accomplish is to definitively end America as we know it.

  • AP Biology Free Response Question help?

Well my teacher gave the class an independent essay to write due by this Friday and I am totally in the dark as to what the answer is. Here is the question: "The relationship of structures to function is one of the major themse in biology. For the following structure/function pair, describe the structure and then explain how the function is related to the structure." I chose the topic "Enzyme/Catalysis".

All I know about enzymes is that at best they look like the letter "C" and the substrates that they 'attach' to neatly fit within the niche, next thing you know a few bonds are made and a few bonds are broken and you have a new compound.

If anyone could give me some vital information as to what I should be looking for or online resources I could access that would be great.

  • I need a free program or software that can convert AVI files to Zune format (WMV)?

I've been looking all over the internet for a program that can convert AVI files to any format that will work on the zune, such as WMV, the problem is that all the programs I download cost money and the trial version restricts the transfer to "this many" minutes and puts a watermark on the video. The AVI files I want to convert are on average two hours long, and the wallet I own does not have an extra $20 for a program I will use seldomly.

If anyone knows where I could download such a program I would greatly appreciate it.

  • What is point of hiring Private Military Corporations?

Why does the US hire PMC's to fight in battles, from what I understand they cost ten times as much as our own military, and last time I checked the US has the best military in the world. Here's what I know so far about PMC's

Pros: PMC casualities are not counted toward the official casuality often heard on the news, they are not bound by foreign law for the actions they commit, it is extremely difficult for to gather any information at all about them.

Cons: They are extremely expensive, they are less responsible with their equipment than the US military, they are more poorly equipped than the US military.

If anyone could enlighten me I would greatly appreciate it.
