  • How effective would a water purifier be if added to a system that already has a water softener?

We live in an area with pretty hard water, but our house has a built-in softener that is pretty effective at removing minerals. The water is still not really drinkable, however -- it's just not tasty. We tried using a Brita filter for a while, but that actually made the water taste even saltier. So...what if we added a filtration system under the sink? Would that be effective, given that we already have a softener?

  • Why do people take their kids to R-rated movies, and then complain about the sex and/or violence?

Seriously, people, I have been reading Yahoo user reviews of Watchmen, and I am totally astounded when someone writes "Took my 9 year old, there was too much sex" or complains about the blue dong etc. Are you freakin' kidding me? It gets worse: you can even find stories of people taking their 3 or 5 year old. This is a dark, gory, grisly film. Taking your child to see it has got to be some sort of child abuse. I mean, what's the point of a rating system if parents are going to completely ignore it? Equally disturbing: complaints about the sex (and/or blue dong) outnumber complaints about violence at least 20 to 1. I guess it's OK for a young child to watch a guy have his arms cut off by a radial saw, or a head hacked a dozen times by a rusty clever, but GOD forbid they catch a glimpse of a small fuzzy blue CGI dong. Maybe the terrorists really have won.

  • Are you genuinely fired up to "drill baby, drill"?

Now that oil prices have plummeted ($75/barrel) and gas is coming down (barely above $3/gallon), isn't it rather foolish to get excited about Sarah Palin's campaign motto? This seems especially true, given that comparatively little oil can be obtained from offshore drilling, the pollution and spill hazards are risky, and it will take 10 years for us to reap any supposed benefit. In light of all this, isn't Palin's slogan rather irresponsible?

  • 20 or 30 years from now, when you look back, what will you say was the last gas-powered car you ever bought?

I am thinking I will say my 2006 Rav4. Anyone who buys a new gasoline-powered vehicle these days could be making a foolish mistake, as the cost of operation may soon become prohibitive. I don't see any reason why oil, currently trading at $120+ per barrel, won't go over $200/barrel in the next few years. That would make gas at least $6/gallon, probably more.

Anyone in the automotive industry right now should be thinking of moving out -- unless they are working on alternative fuel vehicles.

  • Why is it called "mercy" when we put down a young horse with two broken ankles, but when an elderly person...

...in chronic pain no longer wishes to live, and we enable them to end their own lives with dignity, it's called "murder"?

If anything good can come of Eight Bells' untimely death at the Kentucky Derby, it should be a national conversation about empowering people to end their own life with dignity. If we can make the decision to put down (euthanize) a horse, why can't we let people make the same decision for themselves?

Please, I am not interested in any explanation having to do with the supposed uniqueness of the human "soul." It's myopic selfishness to think that humans are the only living beings imbued with spirit.

  • Is Josie on "Farmer Wants a Wife" the epitome of conservative "thinking"?

She calls herself a "10-plus" (at first I thought she meant size, but then I realized she meant as in the Bo Derek movie) because, she claims, it's the natural offshoot of being conservative. She calls herself a "goldigger" (that's G-O-A-L) and rationalizes it by saying all the other girls are too. She aheres to GW's reality-denying philosophy of voluntarism (the belief that saying something makes it so). She's abrasive, brash, and cocky (with almost nothing to back it up). In the first competition of cooping chickens she stood around doing nothing, asserting that a farmer's wife should have people to do the work for her.

At first I hated her; but then the more I saw her in action, the more I pitied her. My guess is she didn't get enough love from daddy....Kindof like GW, Cheney, and Rummy. So, is the remedy HUGS FOR 'PUBS (as in, Republicans)?!

  • What happened to all those 'W' stickers I used to see on car bumpers all over the place?

A few years ago, I couldn't drive 3 blocks without seeing a car bumper or window plastered with a 'W' sticker -- as in, GW Bush. But I hadn't seen one in close to a year until the other day, when I saw one on a beat up old pick-up truck being driven by someone who looked like they were down to their last dollar and final fumes of gas. Did the people who took them off "waffle"? Did they "renounce" him? Should they be condemned for failing to "stay the course"?

  • How much fuel could we save, and how much pollution could we prevent, by stopping auto racing altogether?

Think about it! Those guys go round...and round...and round...burning up fuel and spewing massive quantities of pollution (exhaust not regulated like regular vehicles, if at all).
