  • University of Idaho scholarships?

As a transfer student with 34 credits and a GPA of 3.86, what are the chances of me getting a waiver for out of state tuition?

Or for any scholarships there for that matter.

  • Have children soldiers been used in other regions than Africa?

    see above.

Please elaborate. I am curious to see if it is unique to that continent's conflicts. It is interesting to see that, when child soldiers are used, every faction is responsible.

  • What impact will the ruling in Massachusetts v. the EPA have?

So, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Massachusetts (along with 11 other states, American Samoa and a handful of interest groups).

As an instrument of the executive branch, we will we see the EPA adapting to a role in which it would regulate carbon dioxide emissions? Will this mean another gas is regulated in state emissions vehicle testing or could it expand into a national cap-and-trade scheme?

Will we likely see any effects in the Bush administration under the EPA administration of Stephen L Johnson? Will we have to wait until the next President of the US puts up a pro-carbon regulating administrator? Do you think the Democratically-controlled Senate will only approve of a pro-co2 regulation administrator?

  • A B.A. in Earth Science?

I'm completely interested in environmental science, though I was looking at the curriculum at the same university I plan to attend. The earth science degree seems less applicable to a career. It seems you'd have to get a master's to specialize in geology, atmospheric science, environmental science, hydrology, etc.

Does anyone have experiencing with post-college life with an earth science degree?

Anyway that degree plan requires a year's worth of classes for a minor or double major so maybe I could double up and have an education in Environmental & Earth sciences.

  • Why do skeptics attribute atmospheric carbon dioxide to volcanism?

I hear this all the time and it really confuses me. Volcanoes spew up water vapor, carbon dioxide and sulpher dioxide. The carbon dioxide amounts to 130-230 teragrams of carbon dioxide each year. That is 130 million metric tons. In 2003, according to the Energy Information Administration was 45 times higher, at 5,780.2 million metric tons. So, one nation produced 45 times more than all the volcanism in the world.

And volcanoes, main output sulpher, acts to cool the lower atmosphere and earth's surface by increasing reflection of solar radiation. If you aren't aware, chemical reactions change sulpher dioxide to sulphuric acid. This aerosol acts as nuclei for water vapor. More cloud coverage means a lower temperature. This is why temperature dipped slightly after Mt. Pinatubo's eruption in the mid 20th century.

So anyway my point is why do people say OH VOLCANOES ARE WAY WORSE THAN HUMANS. Or BLAME VOLCANOES FOR GLOBAL WARMING. Where does this misinformation come from?!

  • Can you give me specific instances of bioremediation?

It would be best if you could show me a journal article or scientific document detailing specific incidents. If you just know of the top of your head, that's fine too. I'm just curious.

  • How will a minimum wage hike affect me?

I currently make 7.25$/hr in Texas, in the food service industry (as a barista). Over 26 months, the federal minimum wage will raise to 7.25 an hour. I worked my butt off gaining raises from 6.00$/hr. I think it is overall positive that the min. wage will be raised. However, I would feel bitter if the government upped the min. wage; I'd feel that my work wasn't needed and that I could have just waited longer to enter the workforce or just slack.

Anyway, economists promote an idea of a ripple effect. I don't believe I will be making the same wage in 26 months. But if I am making low pay still, how will it effect me?

  • What happens when steam reacts with plastics?

At my work, making coffees, several employees use steam to compress milk containers for the trash. Heres what they exactly do: They take the steam wand, insert it into the gallon jug hole, push in steam until the it reaches 150degrees. The result is a very hot milk container. Then they compress it. The gas that is pushed out is rather unpleasant smelling. Obviously there is some reaction between the heat or water vapor and the plastic jug.

Is this a health hazard? I looked up benzene then styrene and noticed styrene is a suspected carcinogen.

  • What are the arguments for carbon offsetting?

Example: If you drive an SUV, you can offset your carbon output by funding biofuel producers in Mexico, conserving that same amount of carbon (according to their science).

    My response is:

If it guilts you enough (which it does if you are looking into offsetting), why not ditch the SUV, carpool, take the bus, ride a bike, etc? Is it really just a magic pill so we can sleep at night? How do we know the money we spend actually is allocated to that offsetting project?

My general dislike is that it reallocates the root cause from the original source.

  • Is mantle convection organized?

Why, in rock cycle depictions, does magma move around? Because of convection right? So, it rises because it is hot (right?) but contracts and becomes denser as a reuslt ofcooling (right?). Then sinks at plate boundaries. why at plate boundaries?

And is this conveciton organized around the globe or is it random around on the inside of the crust. Does convection occur under continental plates and how so?

  • What can I do for financial aid?

I haven't yet filed for FAFSA. I'm going but I have to include my parent's income information because under FAFSA guidelines, I am dependent. Of course I have seen my parents only twice in the past two years; they have not contributed a dollar since I moved out. I pay rent, tuition, living expenses, etc on my own.

I talked to my financial aid advisor. There's nothing I can really do for their "override" (or reclassification to independent).

So, my options remaining are: scholarships and loans. Is that right? Can anyone tell me more about loans?

  • Where can I receive a well rounded but affordable B.S. in Environmental Science?

I have taken interest in the degree plans at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas (tuition of 5K) and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (tuition of 4K) in Syrcause, NY. Where did you receive or know of a great degree program? I am not very interested in the realm of industrial hygiene. I'd like to have a cross disciplinary education including geology, biology, and chemistry as well as learning GIS. I don't want an Environmental Studies degree; I want a sciene-based curriculum with less emphasis on public policy, though I would like to learn about resource management. I'd like to minor in geology or forestry. Oh, and a concentration in either environmental engineering technology or environmental analysis. I don't make much money so it'd also be great to have applicable workstudy or internship options.
