The 1689 London Baptist Confession, borrowing from the Westminster Confession, says, "Man, by his fall into a state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation; so as a natural man, being altogether averse from that good, and dead in sin, is not able by his own strength to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto. ( Romans 5:6; Romans 8:7; Ephesians 2:1, 5; Titus 3:3-5; John 6:44 )

Jonathan Edward begins his most famous sermon, "The God that holds you over the pit of hell ... abhors you and is dreadfully provoked; his wrath towards you burns like fire; he look upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire; he is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in his sight ..."

Does God "abhor" anyone? What's Edwards' point here? What great love is that which comes to die for and save that which he abhors?

Does God love the sinner even as He casts him into eternal hell?

Here's mine (from the Westminster Shorter Catechism): God is a spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth.
