  • NIS 2011 obstructing Abelcam?

I have a USB webcam at my front door, it has PTZ capability.

I use Abelcam to allow the camera to be viewed/controlled over the internet.

This worked fine all last year, when I was using KIS 2010 (Kaspersky) as my internet security suite.

KIS used to sometimes interfere with my gaming - anything from Diamond Mine to Metro 2033, so when it came up for renewal I thought I'd give Norton/Symantec another try - word is their package has improved since 2006, when I kicked it into touch.

Anyway, NIS 2011 does seem to be simple to operate, and it does what's required, as far as I can tell - except that it interferes with my control and even simple access of Abelcam over the web.

If I switch off the firewall, everything is as it was last year (in Abelcam terms) but as soon as it's back on, access is sporadic and control impossible.

Abelcam is recognised by Norton - it has created a rule for it allowing access to the necessary ports, but it must need something more.

Web searches reveal nothing about Abelcam on the Norton sites, and nothing about NIS 2011 on the Abelcam sites.

  • Monitor forgets resolution due to KVM?

I have an Aten KVM switch connecting my mouse , keyboard and Samsung SM226BW to two PCs...

The gaming machine has an HD4850 and the music server has an X550 (no great shakes - but it doesn't need to be).

My problem is that, when I switch from one PC to the other, the resolution is lost...

Actually, the desktop remains at 1680x1050, but the screen display switches to something less (1280x800 possibly), so that I can't see the whole desktop at one go, I have to take my mouse off the edge of the screen to scroll it...

Examination of device manager (it's XP, by the way) reveals that only a default monitor is present under "Monitors".

To get the display back to normal, I must:

first scan for hardware changes, to reinstate the SyncMaster 226BW under "Monitors"

then right click on the desktop, and under Properties>Settings change the screen resolution or at least the colour quality, then Apply

then change the resolution and or colour quality back to the 1680x1050 32bit that I want...

Is there a script I could run to make this happen on a single keypress?

  • Window off screen - cannot resize/maximise?

My PC is playing up, and my Kaspersky window appears to have shrunk to a single pixel in the top left of the screen...

I can switch to it using alt-tab, I can then pull up a menu using alt-space, but restore and maximize do nothing, and I can't get hold of it to move or resize - but I do see the mouse pointer change to a four way arrow...

Searching on the web reveals nothing - I'm obviously missing the keyword that describes what's happening here...

    Any suggestions would be welcomed.

    I'm running XP SP3 with an HD4850 at 1680x1050 on a Samsung 22",

and it's been running fine since I built it in February.

Does anyone remember when it was that cable service was withdrawn from a large part of Tower Hamlets?

  • How do I disable the hibernate option?

My OS is XP, and about once a month or so my KVM switch (I think) sends a spurious hibernate command to the PC.

I even changed my keyboard to one with fewer extra keys in an attempt to stop it.

I'm guessing that somewhere in Windows there is something I can switch off - but I don't know where to find it...

  • Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 default recorder: none?

My Roxio CD/DVD burning software has been running fine for about two years.

Last month I built a new PC with XP to replace my aging W2K model. I reloaded all my old software - no problem.

Yesterday I attempted to use Roxio for the first time since the rebuild, and it doesn't recognise my DVD writer.

The level of assistance offered on the Roxio site is lamentable!

The view in the Roxio Community is that the problem is likely to have been caused by XP updates, specifically IE7 and WMP11, and the solution suggested is a system restore...

I had already blocked IE7, but can't get rid of WMP11.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled (hangs on reboot), F8'ed back to last known good config, then rebooted again when "Roxio Assistant" said it had made some registry changes and Roxio doesn't recognise my writer.

  • What NIS firewall settings will enable remote access to my Net2Go website?

The only way I can get external access to my Net2Go site is if I switch the firewall off completely.

It looks as though NIS has created the necessary firewall rule(s):

TCP inbound on port 8008 is enabled

    but the event viewer reports

    Port Blocking blocked 64.94.116.148 (http-alt-1(8008)).

I'll be replacing NIS 2006 with ZoneAlarm Suite 7.0 next week, but I really want to know how NIS is blocking it - can't find anything on the web...

  • XP microphone not working...?

It's plugged in to the pink plug on the rear panel (integrated A8V-VM).

    It's not on mute. (anymore).

The two volume controls I can find for it are both max'ed.

It's as dead as as a convicted war criminal.

    Any suggestions?

No errors reported in device manager...

I replaced the mobo, processor, fan, psu & graphics card just before christmas - but the mike has never worked...
