I love dogs. I also love books. You will find me in those sections 99% of the time :)

  • Comparing dogs to children?

I don't answer often in this section, but I have noticed some people stating that it is wrong to compare dogs and children at ANY time. I understand morally or ethically comparing the two, but is it wrong to compare them when thinking of social or thinking methods?

I've worked with children in schools for awhile now, and talked to teachers. The things they tell me are that children require consistency, thrive off of positive reinforcement, but also need to be reprimanded too. Many children love to please, though not all, and can be upset when you show disappointment of any kind in them.

It just reminded me of dogs. Your opinions would be welcome.

--And as another note, has anyone had trouble asking a question, and seeing the "suggested questions" box for, like, a millisecond before it disappears? It popped up when I started to ask, but when I tried to read through the suggestions, it instantly went away again.

  • Computer Troubles.......?

I have a Dell XPS laptop; 15" screen, very new (not much older than 6 months, if that).

The problem is that instead of shutting down, I typically close the computer, putting it into sleep mode. When I want back on the computer, I open it up, and begin to work. Lately, I have been opening my computer to find that it has shut down.

There appears to be nothing wrong with the computer. When I turn it on, it starts up, goes to the "Resuming Windows" screen, and works just fine. There are abosolutely no flaws when on the computer; I don't have that much installed; and the battery is never dead when it starts up again, whether the computer was plugged in or not.

I have run virus checks on the computer---it comes up with absolutely nothing. Like I said, it's very new, and it only does this when it has been shut for long periods of time, such as all night or all day.

Any ideas of what the problem could be? Any tips on how to fix it....?

I am, of course, considering taking it to a computer expert--I'd just like some professional opinions first. So, please, give me all you know.

    Thank you.

  • Dog lovers-- do you know of any famous dog-related people?

I've always wondered...I love my dogs and am very active in their care, but have never actually "explored" the world of dogs to the point of knowing famous people within it.

I'd like to know of people (past or present---preferably past) who have done amazing things with dogs, particularly Australian Shepherds or other herding breeds.

Any and ALL information is appreciated--I'm researching a bit myself, but help is always wonderful!

    Thank you.

  • Anybody know anything about Latin?

I need to know how to pronounce a few sayings. I know what they mean and everything, I'm just not sure how to pronounce.

    Okay:

    Ab hinc

    Absum

    Ad locum

    Aut disce aut discede

    Odi et amo

    Ascendo tuum

***I would really, really like the last three, but anything is helpful.

    Thank you :)

  • Birth Control? I’m stressing out!?

Okay, so I started Yaz 4 days ago to treat my acne. I am on the Sunday start, I started on Friday, May 30th, and began taking Yaz Sunday, June 1st.

Yesterday, after three days of taking the pill and about 4 days of menstruating (I usually go for 6), Yaz made my period stop. I’m not so much worried about that, unless I should be.

My problem is that on June 20th my brother has a Basketball tourney, where they are staying in a hotel, and I have some friends coming along. They have a decently cool pool, and I am probably going to be expected to swim. From what I have read, there is a chance of breakthrough bleeding or spotting….and naturally I don’t want this to occur while I am swimming.

Is there anything I can do? I need advice!

  • How long can a goldfish live without oxygen??

Hey...this is probably common knowledge, but we had one of those air bubblers for the fish tank, and the hose sprang a leak. We are not able to get one until tomorrow afternoon...will my goldfish be okay until then? I'm not sure on the tank size, but it is pretty sizable, and there is only two goldfish and a bottom feeder (pocostmus (sp?) in there.

Do you think everything will be okay?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Cat + Kittens = help!!!???

Okay, so being in the country, we have many strays wander by and have kittens here. They are not our cats, but rather cats that people have dumped, or have just ended up here, and most all the females are pregnant. We keep the babies, spay/neuter and give away all the ones that we can to good homes...so I have seen my share of kittens.

However, we have a lovely calico that has been hanging around for the last month--pregnant, naturally. We fed her, cared for her, and the like, but she came back today and she has had her kittens in the shed across the road from us, owned by our neighbor.

It's natural she would want to have them there, there are little male cats and hay to keep warm in, and it's protected from the elements. But today, I came home and found she has obviously had her babies (her stomach is no longer large and her tail is all wet, for starters) and I saw her coming from over there, so she obviously had them there. My neighbor's truck is there now, so I cant go see.

  • Fish tank....PLEASE help????

Okay, so I have a fish tank, with no fish in it, yet. It's about medium sized..I'm not sure on the gallons exactly, but it's not super tiny or really, really huge, either.

I have a filter, one of those air strip things (sorry, I am not good with the names of these things) that shoots the bubbles into the air, along with the long black thing that sucks the water up. Once again, there are no fish here, as I havent gotten that far yet, but I set the tank up because my parents thought it would be a good idea for me to let it run for a bit before getting fish.

Anyway, my problem is that the water goes from being warm to being cold...randomly. I dont understand what could make it fluxuate like this...any ideas?? Please help me...I really want to fix this, if I can...or invest in a new tank if needed.

*nice answers please* And thanks for the help!!

  • Quick question about a stray cat???

Hey, so, in a nutshell awhile back a stray cat had kittens on our property (we live in the country). She trusted us at first, but then moved her kittens under the hood of a truck we dont use. They were quite old and wild (as we thought they were long gone...she wasnt super tame herself and was living in our barn) and when they presented themselves, only three were tamed. We gave two of the three away, and kept one, and then kept the three untamed kittens to tame down and then try to find homes for them, or keep them ourselves.

We found a home for the mother cat, and then tamed two of the remaining three and found places for them. I have been working on the last kitten, who is about 4 months old, and is a male orange tabby. He's getting much better, but was quite wild so it has been a long process.

I noticed today that he was limping, and want to get it checked out by a vet, but am unsure if he can be caught, and if he will keep his cool in a vet's office (the only time we...

  • Hey, I dont own a horse, but...?

I dont want to feel dumb for asking this question, but I genuinely want to know. I dont actually own a horse, but my parents do own cows, and in this section I have seen mention of people who have said they have the same basic problem and I was curious to what to do.

    Okay, so here goes:

What do you do when your horse/cow pees/poos in front of you and/or your friends, and they act all grossed out???

This sounds strange, but it personally doesnt bother me one bit, yet whenever my friends come by they want to pet the cows or watch them, and they always, ALWAYS comment on the fact that there are a few cow pies lying around, or if a cow that is even pretty far away starts to use the restroom...I have one person who even gags! It annoys me, and when I say it's natural and that it doesnt bother me, they act like I'm crazy and kind of gross.

So what to do? If you would like to tell a personal story, fine. Suggestions, *nice ones* are appreciated.

  • WWII....help please??

Okay, so for my AP Euro class, I need to write a thesis for this DBQ. Now, I'm not really asking you to do my homework for me, I have gone through all the documents and am going to do this on my own.

However, for some reason I just cant wrap my mind around the question, so if you could explain it to me in different, *easier* terms, that would be great.

    Question:

What were the key concepts of the authoritarian governments and rulers and why were they so appealing in the interwar years (1919-1939)?

So, from this I gather that the interwar years are the years between WWI and WWII, and that there is some government that people are looking towards.

If you could explain/tell me what an authoritarian government would be and give an example and/or reword the question for me that would be great!!

*nice answers, and thanks in advance!*

  • Pet Stores=bad???

Okay, so I know the argument about pet stores being bad because they support puppy mills and all of that.

    BUT

Are they still bad if they just sell pet supplies, fish, a few small animals? No puppies or kittens, just these?? I have to go in and buy two goldfish tomorrow, and I REALLY dont want to get them from WalMart, but I dont want to support a bad pet store, either.

If I go to one of these pet stores where they sell only fish and supplies, is that okay??

    *nice answers please* And THANKS!!

  • What do you think of this breeder??

Hi. Just curious...not looking for a puppy, not right now, but just wondering if you think this breeder is bad/good.

Opinions, but dont be extrememly rude...I am just wondering, so I can sharpen my skills, so to speak, between spotting bad breeders and good ones. I know that since she only breeds English Shepherds, that's a plus, but I would like to know what you think.

  • Pitt Bulls and other "dangerous" dogs??

I am not interested in another dog, nor am I prejudiced against any of the dogs that the media has dubbed "dangerous". I am just curious, and if you could answer my questions, that would be great :).

    1. What are all the bully breeds? Are pitt bulls and rotwielers (sp?) in this category??

    2. Are Pitt Bulls the most hated of all these 'dangrous' dogs? I always seem to hear about them, but have met people who are afraid of Dobermans and Rottwielers and Staffies as well. Why do they get the bad rap? Why are they the ones who appear the most around these discussions.

    Thanks!!

  • How to deal with a misbehaving dog?

How would I deal with my dog, who consantly misbehaves, from chasing the cats (not all the time, either, just at certain times of the year) to going places she knows she shouldnt go.

Discipline seems to be the obvious choice, but what kind? She's 4 years old, and knows this behavior is unacceptable...she has from the time she was a puppy. Spring and summer are the worst times, but it does happen through out the year.

I know she knows what is bad, because regardless if I have seen her do it or not, after her deed is done she acts all ashamed, and upset, like she just knows she has done something wrong. Secluding her wont work, as she is not super cuddly, and prefers to be off by herself playing and exploring, anyway.

So what do you suggest? How do I stop this behavior, if discipline hasnt worked quite so well??

  • How do deal with being "forgotten"??

Okay, so sometimes with my friends I feel a little lost.

I have nice things, a big room, a computer, a nice place to live, and the like. I have been on vacation to Alaska, Washington (the state), Canada, and many other states in the U.S.

I dont want to be a huge boastful person, because I am pretty modest. However, my friends always beat me to the cut. Whenever I have a really cool story to tell, and am telling it, they butt in and tell their own stories, or someone else does and they listen to them instead...my friend was going to go to Alaska, but it fell through, and I was trying to tell her about my trip there, and she wasnt really listening...I said it was chilly, but not super cold in the summer, and she's like..um, no it's cold. It made me upset.

How do I get them to listen, and how do I deal with this feeling??

  • Male puberty + my brother??

Okay, so me and my twin are both 16 years old, and rode the puberty train a long time ago. He was one of the first of his friends, I was somewhere in the middle of mine.

However, and reading To Kill a Mockingbird in English brought this up...he is acting a lot like Jem does through his puberty, and Jem is 13 in the book....he ignores me, treats me like I am a child and he has to parent me, is rude to me and some of my friends, and generally acts like I am some pain. He's also very combative...much stronger and twists my arms and stuff where it really HURTS, but that's nothing that new. He was also really weird to one of my friends, the NICEST person in the world, when she liked him....he's mean to more than one of them, saying mean things

I dont want to be a *clingy* or weird sister, and please dont say that I am, because I am not. But, being twins, he has always just kind of been a friend to me, and I am just wondering if this behavior is some branch of puberty, and growing up.

  • How to deal with jealousy?? Please answer!?!?

Okay, well this is probably going to sound really self-centered, but I am jealous of one of my friends.

Aside from having to deal with her *hatred* towards one of my other friends, and having me be stuck in the middle, I constantly find myself jealous of what she has.

Over the summer, I bought a laptop, cost about $3000. Well, my father bought it, and I love it, but it is a 17" and I cant really take it anywhere...I love it, and cherish it, but I am going to have to buy a new one for college because I need something that is portable. My friend just got a cheaper one, from WalMart, but I fail to see how it is any worse (I am terrible--looking for flaws) and it's the right size at 15" to carry around and take places.

She also got to go to Cancun for spring break, and constantly goes to Hawaii where her grandparents live, and I spent my break in Kansas soaking up the ever-changing weather and ripping up carpet in my deceased grandpa's house.

So, how do I deal with this? Thanks
