The function is 1/(X^3); using the definition of f(x+h)-f(x) / h . The point given is (-2, -1/8). Is there a nice way to simplify it?

  • How will a different type of oil affect the performance of my car?

I have a '97 Dodge Stratus ES, and usually put 5W30 (the recommended) oil in my car; my boyfriend placed 10W when refilling. Will this significantly impact the performance of my car...?

  • Narrowfield vs. Widefield Imaging - What's the difference?

I understand the difference by their names alone, but I'm having difficulty finding a clear-cut definition online with no luck at all. All I keep turning up in search results are proposals T.T

I want to be able to cite a source for this research project I'm doing, rather than just stating it from my own knowledge (as I'm pretty sure it's not considered "common knowledge").

Can anyone help in finding a basic definition somewhere? Any help is very much appreciated!

  • Telescope Mounts on Mauna Kea...?

Hey all, I'm doing a small project, and I'm having a hard time finding what type of telescope mounts are those of the ones on Mauna Kea (Gemini North, Keck I & II, UKIRT, etc.); they all have an alt-az mount, right?

Also, are they all of a cassegrain build...?

  • Please help, my Indian Ringneck won't eat...?

I've just come into the care of a 6 month old Indian Ringneck. I've had him for about 3-4 days now, and while I didn't expect him to do much of anything the first day, but the only normal behavior he hasn't picked up yet is eating regularly. He refuses to eat the pellets (he crunched one and hasn't touched them since), and he'll occasionally pick on peanuts and seeds, but nothing substantial for a meal.

He also doesn't go for water unless I bring it to him (although, he does like to chew on an apple slice when given), but even then, I feel he should be drinking more.

Is there any way to get him to eat the pellets or anything at all for that matter? We've tried carrots too, and he doesn't even seem interested in those either.

  • My car has white steam coming out from under the hood after minimal use...?

I have a '97 Dodge Stratus ES, and if it makes any difference, I live in Hawai`i.

About a year ago, I had to replace the temp gauge as the car was seriously overheating. That seemed to do the trick, as I had no trouble with the car overheating (or smoking) until about a month ago, where it started exhibiting similar signs again, only this time, the steam is coming primarily from the left, from some source I can't identify far back in the assembly...

I took it in a few days ago actually; they did a coolant flush but couldn't detect a leak (as I had noted condensation from lifting the hood after an episode), but they replaced an apparently broken radiator cap. I've also had the oil and oil filter changed recently.

Unfortunately that's not the problem as it has resumed smoking under light/minimal use (just around town) today.

Any ideas? This is getting old real fast.

  • I need help factoring an interesting function...?

    f(x) = (x^3) - 3(x^2) + 4x -12

One of the roots is 3, and judging from the graph should not have any other real roots; however, there are supposed to be 3 positive roots in total...

...how can I factor this function out? Are there imaginary roots?

  • What are some astronomical applications of double integrals...?

I'm researching different applications for a calculus project I have to do; so far we've only covered double integrals (x,y,z coordinates and polar), but so far I haven't been so successful at finding ideas online.

Any suggestions or possible topics for a project?

  • How to fix an automatic window pane that comes unaligned...?

I've got a '97 Dodge Stratus ES, and have had a few problems here and there in the 10 months I've had it; one that has recently popped up is the window pane in the front passenger side now becomes unaligned or comes off the runner... or however it fits into there (sorry, not a big auto-tech person).

Is there a way to replace or remedy the situation? It doesn't always unalign itself when I roll it up, but now I'm slightly wary, because on a couple of occasions when it does, it sounds like I'm cracking the actual pane itself... I just readjust it and it goes back up, but still?

  • Constant eczema on my face, and a questionable case of contact dermatitis?

I have eczema on opposite sides of my mouth (on the left edge and on the right). I didn't have a real problem with it until I went to the Philippines over the summer in '07, and it just got so agitated and red as I had no remedy on hand, and mistakenly tried using chapstick to calm it down (to keep it from flaking, etc), which really made it worse.

I managed to see an on-hand doctor on campus and she prescribed the hydrocortisone cream. She warned me not to use it unless necessary as it is a steroid cream, but I find it hard to live without on a using it every other day, every other two days at longest. After such, the areas start to get red, irritated and itchy again.

Is it really that bad to continue using the cream? It definitely keeps it at bay. I kinda just want to just stick with it until it possibly dies off altogether.

  • Getting off the pill; some insights please?

I am currently on the pill, and have been for 5 months. I've been having symptoms of hand/joint stiffness, headaches, mild depression, and slightly more painful cramps prior to my period.

This is the first pill brand I've been on, and I'm not sure if I want to go around and experiment with other kinds at the expense of my body. Regardless, I would like to hear some other people's experience with getting off the pill? I've heard of some going through severe mood swings and other harsh side effects.

And please note that I will talk to my gyno about it; just trying to get a better grasp as to what others have experienced.

  • How are people going to give me a thumbs down for not baby-feeding a questioneer with a math answer?

    [rant]

I explained in words what the person needed to do in a simple trig problem and didn't go out and solve it for them; but if they read it through, it should make sense and be helpful for other problems too.

It doesn't help in math to just be spoonfed the answer... leaves you in deep crap when a test comes around. T.T

  • Trouble with logging into Scientific Linux?

I have Scientific Linux installed onto my computer, and prior to today (used it yesterday w/o trouble), have been able to login just fine. Everything worked, everything was accessible. I logged out and left for home.

Today when I get to work again, I try to login (with the same user and pass, of course), and it doesn't work; I try it multiple times, and get fed up, and try logging into the "root" user account. I surprisingly manage to do so, and when I go to the system configuration section dealing with users, I see that the password for my user was changed (was 5 characters instead of 8). So I changed it back.

I managed to log back in with the changed password, but when I had it idle and then tried to log back in with the login screen, the password was again changed/not being accepted.

Now it won't even let me get into the root account, saying the session only lasts for less than 10 seconds.

Is it possible for me to just restart it, to wipe it, without having to reinstall SciLin?

  • What is the integral for Escape Velocity?

I'm currently working on a project for my Calc II class, and my topic is on black holes.

I have to put in some sort of calculus into the project, and I was just playing around, and I used mathcad (a math program) to calculate the integral of the general equation for escape velocity. (v=sqr root(2GM/r) )

I'm wondering if this equation even represents anything, and if so, what are the implications??? Boggles my mind.

  • What do you think about people who are mixed?

What do you think about people who are mixed (bi-racial), what do you think of "race-mixing", and why? If you think race-mixing is wrong, go a step further: what do you 'propose'** for people who are bi-racial to do if you consider it wrong? I'd appreciate for this question to be taken seriously. Please don't take any of the questions personally, and please don't bother if you can't answer without resorting to insults. ((**propose: what do you think is most appropriate for them in terms of relationships/marriage?))

  • Northern hemisphere astrophotographers, what are some of your favorite objects?

I'm currently in Astronomy 102, and we're going to start working with our 16" and 10" telescopes to take photos of clusters, galaxies, and all that good stuff in the sky and ultimately come up with a portfolio at the end of the semester.

What are some of your favorite objects to take photos of this time of the year up in the Northern Hemisphere? (Either the NGC or Messier name if it's not relatively well-known.)

Any tips for this novice? :D

  • What's the best way to research scholarships?

I'm having sort of a rough time finding any; I'm planning on majoring in Astronomy, and the only ones I've found are specifics (specifically for graduate students, university-specific, must do our internships-specific, etc.). I don't feel comfortable with those big sites like FastWeb because they require my home address and other personal info, although I'm sure it's all safe for the most part.

Do I just have to keep trudging through the neverending websites or is there a better way?
