  • Please help with my corn snake setup?

i will be getting a corn snake very soon, but first i have set up the 36" vivarium. I will have a heat mat covering just over half the floor. Which will be controlled by a thermostat. I have 2 hides. 1 on hot and the other on the cool side. I have a water bowl and a java branch to climb. Also i have 2 fake plants for decor. BUT. My room is quite dark even during the day. So could i use a 2.0 uvb light strip to light up the vivarium? Or will this be dangerous for my corn snake? I want to be able to see my corn snake and so he knows when it is day time and night time. I have heard that heat mats are better than heat lamps. So is it safe to use a uvb fluorescent tube?

If not, what else could i use? Can i use a regular house bulb?

  • Cornsnake owner, help needed?

I would love to buy a corn snake. I want to keep it in a 24inch or a 36inch wooden vivarium.

I will be using a heat mat to warm up the enclosure. I will stick it inside the vivarium.

What size heat mat do i need for the 24" vivarium? or the 36" vivarium?

Do i HAVE do buy a thermostat? I already use one for my leopard gecko and i don't really want to buy another one unless i really have too. Could i just use a low wattage heat mat?

Lastly, is it safe to use a regular house bulb to light up the vivarium so the snake knows when its daytime and so i can see inside?

    Thanks!!

  • Leopard gecko heating problem?

I have a leopard gecko in a 36" wooden vivarium. I have a heat mat stuck inside the vivarium which is controlled by a thermostat. The substrate i use is rep-ti carpet. I have a 28 watt halogen GLS clear bulb from my local supermarket. The bulb is shining above the hot end. The thermometer reads a temperature of 85.6 F. But when i feel the heat mat, it doesn't really feel hot. Is the bulb giving out most heat? The bulb isn't a proper reptile heat bulb, its just a regular house bulb. The heat mat does not feel that hot, but it still reads 85.6F I have to set my thermostat to 90F for my heat mat to turn on.

Should i put the house bulb in the center of the vivarium? So it doesn't effect what the heating should be? Because im worried that the bulb is giving out lots of heat and the temperature probe is reading it. which is why my heat mat is hardly never on?

Please suggest what i should do.

    Thanks

One last question. Im moving my other leopard gecko into a glass tank. But when i put her in there, she was always outside her cave. It felt really got inside. Is it because the heat mat wattage was too high?

  • Gerbilarium or a 24 inch glass tank?

i currently have a gerbilarium with 2 gerbils in it. Ive only had them for just over 1 week. I do have a 24 inch glass tank with a mesh lid, 2 shelves inside and a ventilation circle thing on one side.

I was thinking of moving my 2 gerbils in the glass tank because it seems bigger and more room to run about. So do you think a gerbilarium is fine, or the glass tank will be much better?

I have heard that glass tanks dont provide much ventilation and i didn't want to risk it because they could be right in the corner and not be able to breathe?

So what do you think will be best? Is it a silly idea? Or will they prefer it?

    Thank you in advance!

  • Can a heat bulb be directly on metal wire mesh?

I am making a mesh top lid for my glass aquarium and im going to be putting a leopard gecko in there. Im making the wire mesh base out of wood and attach the mesh to it to cover the gap so it fits on the top of my tank. Is it safe to put a heat bulb facing down in the tank whilst it sitting on the wire mesh? I will have something like a metal lamp shade thing around the bulb but will the heat melt the metal?

Also, how big do the gaps in the wire mesh need to be? Does it have to be really tiny holes or can they be fairly big?

    Thank you in advanced.

  • Help with glass tank?

i have a 24" long and 12" wide fish tank for my leopard gecko. I will be putting a heat mat underneath one side.

Do i need a heat lamp on top as well?

Do i need a thermostat to control the heat mat, or not?

Also, what can i use for a lid. I want a wire mesh connected to plastic strips so it can rest on the lips inside the tank.

I don't really want to by a thermostat because they are expensive BUT if you say that i need one in a fish tank then i will buy one. i will only buy it if you are certain that i definitely need it.

I do have a thermostat in my 36" long wooden vivarium to control the heat, but this is because the heat mat could burn the wood and start a fire. Please answer my questions.

    Thank-you so much

  • Leopard gecko and eggs?

Last year my leopard gecko laid eggs unexpectedly. Unfortunately i could not incubate them myself because i didn't have the equipment. I have heard that when leopard gecko's lay eggs, their lifespan decreases because of lack of calcium during pregnancy? Is this true? It's the first time my gecko has laid eggs, so will her life span be affected? or will it only happen if someone kept getting their leopard gecko to lay eggs and breed?

    thanks

  • Fish tank for leopard gecko?

i wanted to buy a fish tank for my leopard gecko because they are cheaper. The tank is clear seal. The length is 24 inches. Obviously the aquarium/fish tank is for fish but can you keep reptiles in there? I was going to put the heat mat underneath the glass tank but will the heat crack the glass? Ive used a heat mat for a terrarium and it didn't crack the glass but because the fish tank is for fish will a heat mat be alright? could it crack the glass?

i am going to put feet underneath for ventilation.

    please help me out,

    thank-you

  • compact vivarium and normal vivarium?

i might get a new home for my leopard gecko. i was wondering, what is the difference between 'compact vivarium' and 'vivarium'. i was on this reptile site and i noticed that a 24 inch compact vivarium is £30.00 where just a normal vivarium cost more at £42.39. can you tell me why a compact vivarium is cheaper?

i might aswell go for the cheaper vivarium, but is there a catch?

what is better, or should i get? im only upgrading the size.

Does it matter which one i get?

  • My leopard gecko is always on the cool side of the vivarium?

i have noticed that my female leopard gecko is on the cooler side of the 36'' vivarium. She hides next to her humidity box and under plant decor in the corner. She has been doing this for a couple of weeks now. i have the hot side controlled by a thermo stat. The temperature is between 80 and 85 F. i try decreasing the heat but she still hides in the corner. She is eating well, i am feeding her crickets dusted with calcium every other day. Followed by a waxworm once every week. She sometimes hides in her cave on the hot side. I have held her in my hands and i havn't noticed anything bad.

Please could you tell me and and explain why she is doing this?

i am starting to worry because i feel that im doing something wrong. i have had her since 2009.

Earlier this year she was pregnant and layed about 10 eggs. All of a sudden she is hiding on the cool side all day.

    Thank you

All messages will be read and much appreciated.

  • Does cockatiels molt damage electronics?

I recently brought a cockatiel. And when it shakes, or flys to a perch, loads of tiny feather's fly off and land on my laptop and ps3. i noticed this and covered them with a cover. i believe the tiny feathers are its 'molt'. i have noticed that my laptop is a bit slower than it is usually. is this because my cockatiel's molt has effected and damaged my laptop? or is their molt/tiny feathers completley safe?

    please answer, i am worried

  • Please help me with cockatiels!!!?

i don't know whether to get one cockatiel or two. If i get one cockatiel, it might get lonely because im at school 6 hours mon-fri. if i get two, they will always be with each other everyday but will they still bond with me and listen to me, repeat whistles and words? if i get one, will it be lonely all the time?

Also, is it safe to keep cockatiels in a bedroom? When i go to bed, will i catch a illness from breathing in the smells from their poo or anything else in their cage? as the cage will be underneath my bed. (i have a bunk bed) do i need to take them to the vets for checkups? if so, how often?

Please answer them questions it will really help me, thank-you.
