  • When should I plant grass seed in zone 6 (spring)?

I am overseeding a very bare lawn this spring in upstate NY. We will still have overnight frosts this month. All the seed websites just say to plant in early spring or fall. It's spring! Can I plant soon?

  • Can I add a new circuit breaker to this panel or add dryer to existing breaker?

I have a circuit breaker box with 8 single-pole breakers installed. There are no more spots in the numbered lower part of the panel but there is lots of space at the top where the main breaker shut-off is located. However all these slots are in the part of the panel that says "service disconnect." I need to run a new outlet for an electric dryer. Can I run the dryer on an existing single breaker (I have one that has only the dishwasher)? If not, can I install another breaker in the top part of the box?

  • Need help getting out of escalating abuse situation?

I have been trying to leave my husband for about a year. He drinks a lot (2 DUIs) and refuses to take his prescribed anti-depressants. This summer I tried to leave the "right" way by filing a custody petition for our 3 small children. Because I'm a stay at home mom and he controls all our money, I went with no lawyer (I know, BIG MISTAKE). I have no place to go but my mother's house 4 hrs away. The judge basically shot me down from the first words out of my mouth; later after I got legal aid they said this judge never allows relocation because of his personal history. I panicked and dropped my petition. Now my husband has more control than ever and is using it, being incredibly mean, hard on me and the kids, increasingly paranoid and depressed. A couple of weeks ago he became very agressive during sex, since then I've been refusing to sleep with him and now he's escalated to pushing me and threatening to kick me out of the house. I'm scared that if I leave he'll get me dragged in front of that same judge and I'll be in trouble for taking the kids out of the area. I don't want my kids to have to live in a homeless shelter but staying here is seeming like less and less of an option.

  • New York State- how likely am I to be permitted to move out of state with children after divorce?

I am currently married and living in upstate NY with my 3 children. My husband and I have agreed to divorce but cannot settle custody questions. He says he will fight for physical custody, which I am certain he won't get (I'm their primary-- virtually exclusive-- caregiver) but which will probably cost me a fortune to battle over. I would also like to move home to Ohio, about 4 hours from our current residence, because I have no family in NY and have much better job prospects and access to free child care back home. I'm completely willing to abide by any reasonable visitation schedule my husband requests, but he says I cannot move out of state without his consent. Is this true? I'm a stay at home mom; he loves the kids but has never bathed them, taken them to the doctors, made them breakfast, etc. I (we) be living in poverty if I'm forced to stay here. Will family court provide me with a lawyer-- he's cut off my access to the bank account and I don't know how I'd hire an attorney. Thanks for any help I can get.

  • Can I cut a vent to allow heat to flow to an upstairs bedroom?

I have an upstairs bedroom with no heating vent. The bedroom below it has a forced-air vent. Can I simply cut a hole in the downstairs ceiling to the floor upstairs and put a register cover on each side to allow the warm air to rise upstairs?
