  • Terve! Can someone who speaks Finnish transcribe the lyrics?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JnQztJhjis

The song is Kertakäyttösydän, by Jasmin Michaela. I love the melody, but I have no idea what the lyrics are. Can someone who speaks Finnish transcribe them (no need to translate them into English, just write the lyrics in Finnish).

Thank you! I hope this song wins UMK.

  • Where would my passport be stamped?

If I was to fly to Italy from the US and connect in either London or Zurich, would my passport be stamped in the UK, Switzerland, or Italy first, given that I stay in a transit area of the airport?

Also, is an hour and ten minutes enough to connect in Switzerland if I took the flight there instead of London?

  • Is my average good for these colleges? And which one should I consider the most?

I am in 10th grade (yes, I know it is a bit early to think about college, but I want to be prepared) and have a 92% average unweighted, 95% weighted. Are these good averages (this includes electives and art and gym and stuff, too)? I took an ACT in 8th grade and scored 27. I will retake it, but do you think that is a good grade given my age at the time?

I am looking mostly at Middlebury, UMass Amherst, and University of Washington. I am into languages and want to major in either Chinese, Arabic, or Portuguese, the last two being my preference (I have studied Chinese since 6th grade and have a gift for it, but I want have better listening comprehension in the other two and have never had a chance to study them more in-depth).

Middlebury is the best school for foreign language, but is extremely selective. I would probably want to major in Chinese or Arabic there (maybe dual major?) and minor in Portuguese. The biggest turn-offs of that school for me are that there is no Portuguese major and that it is in a rural area.

UMass Amherst does not have as good of a rep as Middlebury, but is less selective. I would major in Portuguese there or do a SDM of a mix of their Portuguese and Translation majors, while minoring in Chinese. It is the closest of the three to my home in NY, and is in a town similarly-sized to my hometown, but has almost no Arabic Program.

I don't know so much about University of Washington as far as admittance and rep go. If admitted, I would major in Portuguese. The good thing about that school is that they allow one to do three minors. I would minor in Baltic Studies (I am intrigued by the area), Near Eastern Studies, and Chinese.

I plan to declare a major on my application no matter what, but may switch to a dual major or SDM after figuring it out.

What do you think? Which school would work best for me?

  • Teens: work at a chinese restaurant?

I am thinking about getting a job next year, but I will only be 16 then, so my options are limited. I think my best option is to answer the phones at a Chinese restaurant, since I speak Chinese and I live in an area with a lot of those cheap restaurants. Is this a good idea? How should I go about trying to get hired?

  • Can/Should I apply to an international college?

I am interested in living in Portugal, Estonia, or Slovenia during college. I don't want to an exchange program during college, I would rather go to one college in one of those countries for two or four years, depending on the degree. I think Portugal would be my best option, since I speak decent Portuguese but no Estonian or Slovene. I would want to get my degree in either English, Portuguese, or education.

I would be willing to become fluent in either Estonian or Slovene if they have better options that Portugal as far as colleges, economy, housing, and lifestyle are concerned.

Would it be possible to apply to college in one of those three countries? Should I, or is it better to stay in the USA? Would being an international student help in applications?

  • Which language should I focus on?

I'm a native English speaker. I speak very good Mandarin and Portuguese, too. I also speak some Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, Thai, and Estonian, but not quite as well as the others (I speak Thai the best out of these last five). Which of these last five languages should I focus on?

Also, NO ONE should tell me to learn Spanish. I don't care if a language is easy (and it isn't the easiest language for an English speaker, Afrikaans is). I live in the USA, where the illegals insult us by not learning our language (it adds insult to injury). If I plan on visiting a Spanish-speaking country soon, I will pick up the language. I loathe that language.

  • Can an American acquire another citizenship?

I heard that it is possible for immigrants to acquire American citizenship, but when an American (from birth) acquires another, they automatically lose their American citizenship. Is this true?

  • Are Cantonese grammar and Mandarin grammar the same?

    If I wrote:

    我早上七点三刻在运动场跟我的朋友一起一边听音乐一边打网球了。

would a Cantonese speaker understand me? (given that he or she knows both sets of characters)

PS. I know this is a really long sentence, I just wanted to put several grammar quirks in there.

  • Is French or German more useful?

I am a native English speaker who speaks decent Chinese and Portuguese. I want to use these languages in a career eventually (I might go for the CIA or FBI, or I might go into business). Which of these languages is more useful in general? I'm not going for Spanish because the demand for Spanish speakers in America is well met.

  • Popular shoe brands that run wide?

I unfortunately have my parent's 4E width feet. I do care about my shoes and I currently am stuck with New Balance, they seem to be the one brand that runs wide. But they also are extremely dorky. Are there any other brands that I can get wider shoes from?

PS I did manage with Nikes until this year. Our store was moving and was having a clearance sale, so we wanted to take advantage of the sales, and none of the Nikes fit me.

  • Sweetened condensed milk?

Is it normal for sweetened condensed milk to have a small banana taste?

I was making roti a while back, and the recipe called for sweetened condensed milk. The roti had a banana-like taste, but nothing else in the recipe would seem to cause this.

Here is the recipe, I did not use the optional banana.
