  • Christians - Is Objective Evidence Necessary?

This is a little poll for my own curiosity. BACKGROUND: I'm atheist and agnostic, meaning I don't think we can know objectively one way or the other whether a deity exists. I'm more postmodern in my leanings, so I don't see this is a "bad" thing, since I don't think there are a lot of concepts/values/meanings we can get to "objectively." Also, when I look at Christians, I see they have lots of reasons and evidence for God, only I see this evidence as subjective (dependent on experience and interpretation). Again, don't think this is a bad thing necessarily, or a bad reason to believe. Anyway, that's where I come from.

My questions to you are thus:

    1) Do you think there is 'objective' evidence for the existence of God? (And if so, what is the nature of it? Do you think it just logic? And what does 'objective' mean anyway?)

    2) If you don't think there is objective evidence, why not?

    3) What are the implications of there being no objective evidence (whether you believe there is or not)? Does it matter at all? Could God do this for a reason? Is it legitimate to believe in something despite having objective evidence? I personally think it's fine, so don't view that as an attack... Is it just something that is useful for arguments? What are your thoughts on the matter?

    BONUS QUESTION FOR ATHEISTS:

Is it legitimate to believe in something without objective evidence? (It would probably increase my understanding if you tell me what you take 'legitimate' and 'believe in' to mean.)

  • What is the difference between "believing" and "thinking"?

Do you think god does/not exist? Or do you believe god doesn/not exist?

How do you use these terms? (And what about "knowing" and "feeling"?

  • What do you think of the Interfaith Movement?

This is a question for both theists and non-theists. What do you think of the interfaith movement? (For those who don't know, it basically tries to promote dialogue, tolerance, and community between people of different faiths or no faith.) I'm an atheist and I've been pleasantly surprised by the interfaith events I've attended. Has anyone else been involved with it? What were your opinions?

  • Christians, have any of you read The God Delusion?

What were your thoughts? Do you think it's worth reading to know the other side of the argument? I'm atheist and read the Bible to better understand where the other side is coming from/how it can be interpreted, and I was wondering if anyone on the other side did something similar.

  • How do I increase my laptop's virtual memory?

Is there anything I can do? Would it help if I deleted all unnecessary files? I have a lot of icons I've collected, but I'd hate to trash them if it wouldn't really help.

  • Christians, does anyone want to have a serious Bible study with me (an atheist)?

I want to read through the Bible and thought it would be helpful/interesting to have some discussions/debates with someone as I go. (Plus, it would keep me on track so I could actually get through the darn thing!) If you would like to read through the Bible and think it would be helpful/interesting to talk about it as you go, you should email me. \o/ I'm not looking to debate whether or not God exists, but what the text is saying.

IF NOT, here is another question: have you ever read the Bible all the way through?

  • Parallels between confessional poetry and romanticism?

    Oh, I need help. >.<

Are there *any* similarities/parallels that can be drawn between modern confessional poetry and English Romanticism? Any thoughts would be very useful.

(Also, if it helps, I'm trying to compare two love poems - The Indian Serenade by Percy Shelley and one of Adrienne Rich's Twenty-One Love Poems.)

  • What is this computer game?

I'm trying to find a computer game that I played years and years ago. It was one of those side-scrolling shooters - you know, where you play as a spaceship and your purpose in life is to reach the right side of the level while annihilating all enemies. I remember very little about the game or the plot, other than there was a big ship that you had to enter as your tiny ship and destroy from the inside out. All the text was in Japanese, so I couldn't read it. But what I do remember was the heart of this massive enemy ship... literally, a heart. It was a globby, pulsating red mass that you flew into and blasted aliens from within its cramped artificial veins. After defeating the final boss (some sort of big android thing) the mothership explodes and you win the game... but as the credits scroll, you see the heart, spinning slowly through the dark reaches of space. Does this sound familar to anyone???
