  • From what depth can a submarine launch missiles?

Doctor Who, episode "Cold War." Russian submarine has crash dived, "grounded"at 700 meters down. Skaldak is threatening to launch the nuclear payload.

Would this work from that depth?

  • Are people really as promiscuous as TV and movies would have us believe?

Do women really sleep with men so easily? Do you seek out casual encounters with coworkers, friends, even strangers at bars? If so, what criteria do you use? Is it strictly appearance and presentation, or do you seek out men you might actually pursue longer relationships with?

  • MTG: How does damage prevention work with Planeswalkers?

If I have damage prevention at my disposal, when I apply it, but my opponent redirects the damage to a Planeswalker, does it resolve? Or does the full damage apply to the Planeswalker, and the prevention effect remains in place relative to me (player)?

Also, during combat, can damage prevention be applied towards the Planeswalker? If the attacker is declared against a planeswalker, can the prevention effect be used for the Planeswalker?

  • In mtg: When soldier tokens are created, are they also human?

If a spell, artifact or effect creates soldier tokens, do they have any additional "type" designations if the creation effect does not specify? There are new equipment cards in Innistrad which specify bonuses if the equipped creatures are human. If a soldier token does not specify "Human Soldier," can that token creature gain a bonus which specifies "Human"?

  • Magic (MTG): How does global damage affect planeswalkers?

For any spell or effect which does damage to all creatures and players, how does it apply? For example, if I Earthquake for 3, does the planeswalker take the 3pt. damage/loyalty loss?

  • In MTG (Magic), how serious of a cheat is it to peek at your next draw?

At Friday Night, one of my friend's opponents openly checked his next draw before end of turn had passed to him. She warned him not to do it again.

Obviously, this would be a disqualify in high tournament, but how serious is this on Friday? Should she have called over the on-site judge?

  • What are some fun things to do while visiting New York City?

We are going near the end of February. While the City pass is under consideration, we were looking for some extra ideas. We would be considering some of the nightclubs, as well as other things to do in the overnights in the city.

Any ideas? Please note if these are things you have done, or if you live in the city or not.

  • Are all insurance companies basically MLM (Multi-Level Marketing)?

Recently I got a call from someone claiming to be a "recruiter" from a national insurance chain. I was a little leery from the start, as she sounded like she was reading from a script (and not very well at that). Still, I looked up the job listing, decided to go to the "interview," but with a fair amount of skepticism.

As expected, even before I met with the "recruiter," the promo video playing in the waiting room hit one of the high points: the phrase "grow your business." As the interview continued, the talking points of MLM kept coming up. "How much time and money are you prepared to invest in this?" "Are you ready to start building your book of clients?" After I asked a question about cold-call telemarketing, they even used the phrase "purchase leads."

Is this the norm in the insurance industry, or is this just a bad company?

  • On Hawaii (Big Island), what are some fun and interesting things to do?

We will be going on vacation to the Big Island of Hawaii, and are wondering about some of the little known fun things to do while there. This our second trip there. Our first time was 10 ears ago, for our honeymoon. We are already planning for Volcano Park, the Volcano Winery, and some golfing.

What suggestions do you have for some "off the beaten" path activities while there? What about some of the unique restaurants and eateries to try?

  • Does anyone know anything about Jackson Pollock paintings on sheet metal?

I was at an antique store, and found a piece of sheet metal with artwork which looked like a Jackson Pollock painting. The metal was a little over 3 feet, almost square gunmetal grey. There was a Pollock signature in the corner, but I was a little suspicious.

I am hoping to get some more information, because I think I might go get it Monday. It's a conversation piece, at the very least.

  • Why was Nero's Romulan ship named after a Doctor Who creature?

Romulan cry-baby Nero is captain of the Nerada. What kind of name is Nerada?

Oh right, the Vashta Nerada were swarming, carnivorous beings. The name meant "the Shadows that melt the flesh". They were featured in the episode "Silence in the Library."

So, not only is Kirk a fan of Classic Rock stations, but Nero is a big old Doctor Who fan.

  • "This is Radio Freedom." From where does this sample come?

The sample starts two songs that I know of. It begins KLF's "3 A.M. Eternal" and Scooter's "Hello (Good to be back)"

The sample, which sounds like a radio broad cast, says "This is radio freedom," and is followed by automatic gunfire. I should probably know from where it comes, but I can't remember.

  • Did the opening of this week's NCIS seem familiar to anyone else?

The opening gambit for this week's NCIS looked just like the opening for the Torchwood episode, "Countrycide." Driver on a country road thinks they hit somebody, only to find the "body" to be a fake. They return to their car, and the keys are gone. They try their cell, but there's no signal.

I think somebody at CBS owes somebody at the BBC some money.

  • If KFC is "America's favorite chicken," why is the commercial set in the UK?

To elaborate, the commercial starts with the woman pulling up to the KFC while the Tyson truck is delivering. I noticed right away that she was getting out on the right side of the car, but I thought that she could be a passenger. Later, I realized that she was - in fact - getting out on the driver's side...in a UK car. I double checked to see if you could see the plate, and - as expected - it's not an American plate.

    What's up with that?

  • What is the custom of Prodomition?

    A web resource I was looking at list this about it;

January 7th: In the town of Katarini and in the quarter known as Katafigioton there is a revival of the old custom of Prodomition who were the forerunners of the national liberation when the country was still under Ottoman rule.

That's not a lot of information about what, exactly, this custom involves. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Does Nirvana qualify as the most successful emo band of all time?

    1. According to wiki: "The term emo was derived from the fact that, on occasion, members of a band would become spontaneously and strongly emotional during performances."

    2. Also from wiki: "[Grunge lyrics] are typically angst-filled — anger, frustration, ennui, fear, depression and drug addiction are often explored in grunge songs."

    3. Emotions include anger, frustration, ennuui, fear, and depression.

    Need more proof?;

    1. According to Andy Radin ("What the heck is emo anyways): "The prevailing change in D.C. is toward melodic rock with punk sensibilities.[...] These bands' sound eventually becomes known as the classic 'D.C. sound.' Some of it is derisively labeled 'emo,' as shorthand for 'emotional.'"

    2. And from St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture© on Grunge: "as the hard-core and punk movements began to wane in the mid-1980s, many of those independent bands retained their amplifiers and distortion pedals but began slowing the tempos of their songs considerably."

  • What is the earliest a total lunar eclipse would be visable?

Consider, the eclipse is created when the moon passes into the shadow of the Earth. This would indicate that the sun and the moon are on opposite sides of the planet. How early in the afternoon could the eclipse be visible?

According to James Bruce, in "Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile, vol IV," he used his knowledge of an eclipse to escape the wrath of the Sheikh of Beyla. (Beyla being in Republic of Guinea today)

"If the afternoon of that [Friday] shall pass like those of common days, I am a worthless man and an imposter; butif on thatday after four o'clock a sign be seen in the heavens that shall be thought by all of you unusual and extraordinary, then I am an innocent man."

Further, it is claimed that there was indeed a total eclipse visable at ten minutes past four. To me, this seemed unlikely, particularly in such a near equitorial locale.

  • When I go to the barber and ask for a Caesar cut, should he be asking me "How short"?

I mean, I thought it was a simple instruction. In the past, I have used more complex instructions (no guard on parts, etc.), but I thought this simple, standard cut would be no problem. I was shocked when he asked me "how short?"

For the record, I just responded "As short as it goes."

  • If the world is experiencing Global Warming, then why are citrus crops still being decimated by frost?

In the past, citrus crops were occasionally decimated by unseasonal early frosts.

    This year, which has been claimed as the warmest winter in history, you would think the fruits would be safely ripened and harvested, but then this happens;
