  • Atheists.. Where\Who\What to you seek inspiration and guidence from in times of crisis?

I do not wish to be patronising with this question. I think there are times in our lives when we question ourselves and seek external inspiration. The same question when asked to religious audience tends to get a uniform response.. they turn to God. For example the ten commandments is a moral guideline 'unquestionable' by human if it interpreted as the word of God. Im curious to discover whether your moral choices in times of doubt are tied to a rigid stucture/belief system. Personally I dont buy the idea of people being born with morals.. I think one way are another we unquestionably learn them through the influence of those we admire most. Nietzche suggested that when we destroy the idea of God we must replace the unquestionable moral belief system with manmade moral ideals which he suggests will invevitably become re-standardised over time. The human who has most influence over these guidelines according to Nietzshe becomes the superhuman. Hilter interpreted himself as the superhuman as part of his delusion. A person who I would respect as a moral beakon would be Chomsky. Therefore I guess if everyone thought similar then he would be the superhuman.

I would be interested in hearing anyones point of view on this issue.

  • Photographers rights of pics taken at a public event?

My question is, if you take a nice picture of a model at a public event [street fahion show] with the permission of the event organiser do you have the right to a) use in portfolio b) publish without restraint? c) earn money from these pics?

I was talking to the model agency director subsequently and she mentioned model release forms. She was concerned [rightly so] that there was one underage model there ..whose photos I wont use anyway.

Does the fact that it was a public performance [and I had permission] mean that I solely own the rights?

  • Using new AA rechargeables?

I got an extra set of AA 2450mAh Energizers for my 580ex2 for a wedding tomorrow. Should I open the pack and charge them, discharge and then charge them or leave them sealed until I may need them?

  • Newspaper illegally publishing my picture?

A newspaper who I shall not name at the moment has published a picture on their website [with an article] without my consent or without even crediting me. I have recently been shooting at lots of sports events locally. I sent some pictures to a sports editor. I had pictures of the main game and a half time youths mini game. I believe I sufficiently distinguished the difference in terms between the pics of the main game and the halftime mini game. Here is part of what I wrote in the email to him:

"I thought you might be getting a couple of pics from the agencies this week so I said Id send you what I have from the ****** V ***** game. Please get back to me if you would like to publish any. Also, Ive included some pics of the half time mini game cause I told them I would send it to the papers.. there is no charge for these pics but should you wish to publish any if you could credit bqimages.net that would be great."

The pictures were not water marked and were all lores versions, so I presume none were actually on the printed edition, although as yet I am not sure. My name is written as the owner in the info section of the files and in the copyright section it says "Do not publish without written consent." I am planning on ring the paper first thing in the morning. I have a verbal agreement with them to supplying them with a picture from 3 specific games [which I will not be paid for] and in return they have agreed to assess me as a candidate for paid work.. although I will wish to remain freelance. Therefore I have a dilemma as to how diplomatic I should be about this. What I am thinking is to talk to the sports editor first to seek an explanation and if he cannot rectify the situation I think I will have to speak with the editor. Im really not happy about this.. it feels like Ive been conned and robbed. I work very hard and this deprives me of my livelyhood. I live in Ireland where I presume the laws are very similar to the UK on this type of copyright infringement. What are my options? How would you proceed in this circumstance?

  • Using 580ex II with EOS7d wireless transmitter for action?

I will be shooting some skateboarders at an indoor skate park tomorrow and will be using my 58ex ii speedlite to hopefully get decent results. What I cant figure out is how to disable the 7d's flash and still fire the external one.. wirelessly. The reason I want to do this is so I can position the flash on the side of the camera to shoot wide angles in portrait style without too many visible shadow lines and maybe also position the flash remotely. The problem is that the loading of the 7d flash seems to take about a second per shot vs the speedlite about 1/4 seconds. Therefore Id love to be able to shoot with remote flash at 4 frames per sec rather than 1. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!!

  • Canon 50mm f1.4 focussing dead?

I bought a Canon 50mm f1.4 along with an EOS 7d in November. Everything was smooth until this evening. Before leaving for a gig this evening I fitted the lens and just happened to test its focussing speed with the cap on. It seemed a little more sluggish than usual but I soon forgot and left the house. At the gig things seemed ok but I noticed a few more shots than usual were out of focus.. I initially put this down to chance. Then when I was trying to get shots of the drummer I couldnt get his face in focus.. [was shooting at f1.8]. I thought that was very strange indeed. I then switched to live view to focus manually on his face and I noticed that the focus ring was ineffective. Then I noticed that the autofocus would track from infinity to about 2m and then stick. It then refused to budge entirely. There has been no physical damage whatsoever to this lens and Im always careful to keep it under my coat if Im out in the wet. What could have caused this and is it easily repairable? I bought it from simplyelectronics.net so Im worried that returning it will be a lengthy process.. one which I could do without afford right now as Im very busy and my career is progressing fast. I will for sure suffer loss of earnings as I will not be able to take such lowlight shots with nice bokah with my other lenses. Im thinking of seeing can I get it repaired locally for a reasonable price. Anyone know what that kind of repair would cost? Any other ideas? Thanks!

  • Is it true that our sense of morality splinters over progressive generations of non-religious society?

Is it probable that if this splintering/factioning occurs it leads to more dysfunctional society?

Didnt it already happen.. and they called it the dark ages?

  • What defines an entity? What makes it more than the sum of its parts?

Difficult question I guess but interesting in terms of evolution and our definition of life, existence etc. I would love to hear your opinions.

  • Shooting a football match?

Ill be shooting my first soccer match tomorrow with a canon 40d and a sigma 70-200mm. That equtes to 120-320mm in 35mm terms. Is there an area I should stick around with this lens? Im thinking of about 10 yards upfield from the corner flag.. Would this position suit a lens of this focal length?

Ill be using a monopod and can shoot at f2.8. Ill be shooting jpegs. Is there anything else important I should do?

    Any tips or tricks welcome..

    Thanks!

  • Revised version.. do you have an opinion?

    Martyr of Love

This is me ill spill my blood

For you you see my death will flood

Your mind with hope that we will be

At one in love and forever will be.

A vision so bright and a past so frought

    With tears and fears of a life worth nought;

Ill rise and be what makes me feel

Alive in death and together we'll be.

As time melts on we look to find

All that conquests seek to blind,

A life worth living is a death worth giving

To you my love: for death binds the living.

For you you see my death will flood

Your mind with hope that we will be

Bound by love and forever will be.

  • Would you like to comment on this?

Was just in the mood for writing something and this is what came out the other side. Its called: For the greater good of it all

A face that curls to the wall,

A wall that burrows through time,

The brick just aware that its thick,

And the wind skatters leaves on the shrine.

They all make sense of themselves,

Like the blind man's stick dead on the road,

    They all make sense overall,

But too willing to compete shall they fall.
